All in all, Axel & Pixel is worth checking out at the $10 price it can be had for, and it's certainly a visually interesting take on the adventure game genre. Not quite mind-blowing, but still fun, and I hope to see another adventure or two out of this duo in the near future.

I had a blast playing Axel & Pixel, but the thrill was short lived. It can be beaten in a day and although the arcade mini-games are worth sticking around for they're not as engrossing as the adventure. But I definitely recommend it to both point-and-click fans and younger gamers. This is one of those childrens' stories that will seem completely cracked out to adults. Hopefully it won't be the last we see of the painter and his dog.
Either way, Axel & Pixel's challenge is light but creative, and it bursts with personality, delight, and silly enjoyment. It's not for people who don' t like point-and-click adventures like Sam & Max and The Secret of Monkey Island, but for those looking for a quick and pleasant distraction should give it a try.
But for those willing to sit back and savour the unhurriedness, the experience can be both enlightening and rewarding, revealing as it does truths about this world even as it paints a vivid picture of another. Axel should be proud: that surely is the highest calling of any artist.
It lacks the originality of Samorost and never really excels beyond its artwork, but Axel & Pixel is a pleasant reproduction of an enjoyable game style.
If it were a 400-point trifle, you could almost forgive Axel & Pixel for all that it lacks. But for the full Xbox Live price tag of 800 points, you expect a little more than the couple of hours of diversion that this romp through dreamland has to offer. That said, the quirky lead characters, unique art style, and bizarro settings offer great fodder for a sequel…as long as the developer makes better use of these assets and turns them into a real game.
