This Tetris-like game has a plethora of options, but it really shines in two-player mode. Baku Baku Animal packs the most fun you'll have in a competitive puzzle game.
WindowsPC Zone
It may be simple by today's standards, it may not tickle the fancy of the Doom generation, but it's got a kicking soundtrack, it's more addictive than cocaine and it's the best argument for having Windows 95 I've seen.

Despite it's cute exterior, there's a lot of depth to Baku Baku Animal. The skill and strategy involved are a step above Puyo Puyo. Overall, the game is an excellent and highly addictive.

Despite these porting problems, however, BAKU BAKU remains a challenging puzzle and an enjoyable distraction that stretches from five minutes during your lunch hour to “just one more game” well after midnight.

OK, so it isn't the most original game in the world. Baku Baku resembles Tetris, Columns, Puyo Puyo, Klax, Trip'd and a bunch of other puzzles games: stuff falls from the top and you have to eliminate it. One of the things that these games have in common is a high rate of addiction and some fantastic gameplay.

I first played this gem on a sampler CD that included Three Dirty Dwarves, Clockwork Knight 2, and Virtual On. While we know the respective fates and doomed obscurities of that lot, Baku Baku never received the recognition I thought it deserved. This is an addictive puzzle game that plays even better against another human friend. Chain reactions occur on a very random basis, though, and sometimes a round will end without either person realizing they were so close to victory. Such is the plight of games about animals that eat food.

In the end though, it's not graphics or sound that matter in a puzzle game. Baku Baku is quick, competitive (the game includes modem play), and addictive, and that's all that really matters. If you've been waiting for a puzzle game with a little bite (sorry, I just had to say it), this is one of this year's best.

Most Tetris clones aren't worth the disc they're burned on. However, Baku Baku captures the addictive qualities of the original Tetris and even surpasses it in terms of two-player action.

In conclusion, when you're basically playing this one alone with only seven opponents between all the difficulty levels, the game is reduced to a once in a while, only when I have nothing else to do, hey! I haven't played Baku Baku for a while, wait, where the hell did I put it? Oh well, I guess I'll play Sonic triple trouble again kind of game. Other than those two factors, it is a solid puzzle game with nice graphics and a progressively more challenging difficulty level. If available, though, I would recommend the Saturn version.

The overall theme seems like a kid's game, but just like most puzzle products, you can build up big chain reactions and cause massive combos that will dump a lot of pieces on your opponent. The complexity is all up to the player and it can give even experts a good thrill. There is a cute and friendly overtone that may make it appear to be a kids-only game, but don't let the animals and kiddie dialogue fool you. This is a very fun game and is an especially great title for a portable format.

Baku Baku is simplicity defined. The concept is tired, I found the game repetitive after the first block fell. Yes we've got funny looking munching animals, different kinds of beastie food groups dropping from the heavens and a two player versus game that is kind of fun (almost all two payer versus games are kind of fun) but when you put this one back on the shelf (just a suggestion), I doubt very much that you'll be able to remember the last time you were any less blown away by a puzzler. I have to give Baku Baku a fairly decent numerical value because it's utilizing tried and true game play that doesn't totally suck but do yourself a favor, save your money for a Nomad and then pick up a whole slew of better 16-Bit puzzle games at bargain basement prices.

So, if you're feeling a little depressed because your life seems devoid of a good Tetris clone, then by all means seek this game out (or therapy).
