The Ball has a lot going for it including complex puzzles, unique gameplay and some heavy action sections. If you’re a fan of Portal, Twin Sector or Indiana Jones, you’ll certainly find something in this game that you love. Plus, you get to squash zombies with a big metal ball, how fun does that sound!?

Pacing is a weakness, but not a fatal one. The Ball is inventive, creative and (despite the existence of Portal) something refreshing. A majority of the puzzle-mechanisms are well-designed and it seems near-impossible to leave yourself stuck in an unsolvable situation. Combat with a huge, meaty ball is very satisfying indeed, aided by audio that is suitably thunderous and squelchy. For the asking price of $20.00 USD / £15.00 GBP you're getting something that's smart, bold and doubles surprisingly well as a monkey-murder simulator.

Teotl Studios have created a beautiful world with this Unreal mod-turned full retail game, and I can’t wait to see where they take us next.

What with its short Campaign mode (less than 10 hours), bargain price, and Unreal Tournament mod origins, The Ball might seem more like a desktop diversion than a full-retail game. But I consider it a polished, lovable breath of old-school fresh air within a PC game environment that desperately needs reinvigoration. Despite its Mature ESRB rating, the developer targets both hardcore and casual players; the puzzles and fights are not excruciating, there is little penalty for dying, and gore can be turned off. It would be a true strategic mistake not to gravitate toward The Ball as quickly as possible.

There’s a lot to learn from pushing around a rock. It’s a lesson in evolving gameplaying, applying simple mechanics to complex situations, and how three guys beat the odds in creating not only a game but a vision. For anyone interested in game that takes you off the beaten path and into a world unlike any other, The Ball delivers an experience that’s both challenging and refreshing. After seeing the evolution of design that this team can accomplish within a single game, I can only believe that the sky is the limit for them when it comes to their next game. Until then, we can keep pushing this rock up the hill.

The Ball is absoluut een vermakelijke en originele first person puzzelgame.

I love my ball, but The Ball has some issues. Which is to say, The Ball has an innovative and fun core that is undoubtedly worth the price tag, even though it is paced poorly. More than anything, The Ball has me excited about The Second Ball or The Balls or whatever Teotl Studios decides to develop next - assuming the developer improves upon this release.

I had a good time playing with my Ball, although I was hoping that it would be a bit more challenging. Personally I found that the game was too easy to complete, and the Survival game mode and achievements don’t really extend the value of the game by a lot. It would be a different story if the game had some sort of puzzle Challenge or Time Trial game mode. I don’t think the meagre 8-10 hours of gameplay you get are worth the £14.99 price tag (on Steam and Play.com), but Teotl Studios really had something going here. I hope we get to see more of them in the future, and hopefully they will take lessons from the feedback The Ball is giving them currently.

The Ball is a good game to get your name out there, a fun and engaging title that suffers from a few very annoying flaws. I’m going to risk a music analogy here now, if you’ll permit me. The Ball is not the chart-topping début album of an X-Factor contestant; it’s not been heavily groomed to sell a boat-load of copies only for the artists behind it to flounder when the public gaze is turned upon them proper. No, it’s one of the early bootlegs of a serious musician, the ones people go searching for years later, after their fourth album finally breaks them into the public consciousness and suddenly everyone wants to say they were there at the start. The Ball has a few flaws that detract from it, but it it one of those rare games that is willing to do something different, or at least to try. That they haven’t fully succeeded is a bit vexing, but it doesn’t mean they’ve failed.

The Ball is good effort with some interesting ideas. Unfortunately, the good things are undermined by some questionable combat mechanics, a bothersome, half-obstructed first person point of view and a half-baked story concept. The game retails at $19.99 and a full playthrough takes five or six hours (depending on your puzzle solving skill or willingness to use the hint system) with the extra survival challenges providing a bit more (albeit quite similar) gameplay. Flaws and all, if you're a puzzle fanatic, the game might be worth a look. Otherwise, the annoyances probably won't make it worth your time.

It’s a shame that The Ball appears to settle for being an average game, rather than the truly stellar, must-play title it could have so easily and obviously have been. As it is, it’s worth a look if you’re looking for a slow-burning brainteaser, but not worth any particular recommendation on any other front.

In Teotl Studios' The Ball, it's just you, a strange gun, and a huge metallic sphere. You push and pull it around the machines and traps of an ancient underground civilization and try to not get cut down by the occasional zombie rush in the process. With clever gameplay variety, a solid progression curve, and logical solutions to the challenges that prevent unnecessary frustration, expect to have a good time throughout the game's relatively brief run. With a more involving narrative presentation and less wonky combat elements, this could have been truly great.

The bottom line is that The Ball is a well made game and is fun to play when done correctly. I still want to take half a point off for the lack of an obvious SAVE GAME feature. At best it means you can't just stop it when you need to go and pick back up where you left off. A worst it means having to repeat several puzzles over and over as you work through a tough one.

Sometimes, mind you, Teotl Studios could have signposted the whole thing just a little better, because when you're stuck, The Ball is about as much fun as Five Live on the M25 in rushhour.

We really do applaud new ideas, and seeing indie game developers make it into the big wide world of commercial gaming is a true joy. But sadly it is simply impossible to recommend The Ball as a purchase to anyone. The game is just far too easy, too short, and lacking any real depth or imagination. There was so much potential in the idea, but that potential has not been fully realised. Any kind of gameplay variation, or any real skill required for the puzzles would have been gladly welcomed. Maybe the introduction of Bally’s good friends Cubey or Pyramidy may have helped. No, sadly the game’s fate is sealed as a mildly entertaining little puzzler that tried, and failed, at implementing a new idea. The Ball will soon be forgotten forever in the mists of time, so please allow it to sink gracefully into the mire unplayed, and let’s just salute the developers for having the balls (sorry) to try something new.

Where Portal excelled in trimming away filler to provide an extremely focused gaming experience, The Ball stops frustratingly short of the mark. With a disheartening lack of variety plaguing the first two-thirds of the game, it's an unnecessarily laborious task to unearth its finer moments. As an Unreal Tournament mod, The Ball is certainly one of the finest. As a retail product, however, poor pacing keeps it from stacking up against the competition.
