While some people might complain about being fatigued by the seemingly endless stream of similar music games, when they're tied to each other like Band Hero is tied to GH5, I see that as a positive direction for Activision's franchise. It's one of the strongest points of the Rock Band series, and is a very smart move for Hero as well.

Look, I'm aware that there's a teen-girl stigma to this game. And sure, if you can't stand any of the 65 songs on the disc, even the most entertaining note charting won't change your mind. But, if you're interested in even half the songs, I can almost guarantee you'll find at least a couple more surprisingly entertaining. And that pretty much sums up Band Hero for me: It's not a revolution for the genre, but it is a surprisingly solid, well thought-out, and just plain entertaining game.

Band Hero is an impressive game, but it does take a hit for not feeling that unique because this is really just Guitar Hero 5 with a pink/purple motif. In the end, this is one of the examples people will point to when they talk about Activision milking the Guitar Hero franchise for all it’s worth – even though this time the milk is quenching the thirst of every Taylor Swift fan out there with a plastic guitar.

Band Hero is the game to get if you're not bothered about rock music. If you prefer Duffy to death metal and Counting Crows to KoRn then this should come as a pleasing alternative to Guitar Hero. For everyone else, shrug your shoulders and keep walking.

Really, when it all comes down to it, the only major addition to the Guitar Hero formula in Band Hero is the addition of DS Party Play. But it maintains the status quo of the series very well cutting no features from earlier games. While hardcore Guitar Hero fans will probably complain about this one, Band Hero is another excellent addition to the series, one that makes party play a priority and delivers.

WiiGaming Nexus
Band Hero loosens the reins on the game play to make the game more crowd friendly. The anything goes style carries over into the song list where everyone you know is bound to find at least one song they have heard and/or like.

Band Hero is not a bad addition to the franchise, but actually a step in the right direction. Some people may say Activision is milking the franchise when it is truly apparent they are simply offering many avenues for everyone to find something they like. The Top 40 music game is actually long overdue and I don't think it would be any more sensible to make this entire thing DLC as it would require people only wanting these songs to purchase both the original game and an entirely new pack. I like the idea and I think Band Hero executes it nicely. If you are not into this type of music there is no reason to check it out, however, if you do own the latest Taylor Swift CD and still wish the Spice Girls would release a new album, it is right up your alley.

The main problem with Band Hero is that there’s actually very little here to differentiate it from the rest of the Guitar Hero franchise. For a game that Activision have said they want to stand on its own, it just doesn’t seem to change the formula enough to make it appeal to people who haven’t played other games in the series. At least not yet, anyway. Really, this is just a gussied-up track pack for the casual market. That’s not to say that it isn’t a fun experience, it’s just certainly not a new one.

Band Hero is a really great game, fans of the pop genre will love every song that was included in it. The only issue is that it is practically a clone of Guitar Hero 5 that was released two months ago with no real differences other than the songs included. It is obvious that Activision wants to start another franchise with this game, and hopefully the next version will actually have differences than feel like a "track pack". Other then this complaint, you and your friends will have a blast with Band Hero for months on end.

Aside from new celebrities, songs, and venues, Band Hero isn't that different from Guitar Hero 5. You can compete online in a number of different modes, and vocalists now have to use a controller to activate star power. Like Guitar Hero 5, Band Hero is a well put together, robust rhythm game, and Party Play mode is a great way to entice shy friends to join in the fun. There's a lot of good stuff here, unless, of course, you already own Guitar Hero 5, in which case it is little more than a full-price track pack. But if you're looking for more songs or interested to see what this plastic video game rock craze is all about, Band Hero is a great option. It may not blow the roof off, but it will definitely get your party rockin'.

WiiDa Gameboyz
At the end of the day I can’t help but feel the similarities between Band Hero and Guitar Hero 5 are more than skin deep. The features and modes are virtually identical and the only major difference being is the focus of the setlists (e.g. pop and top-40 music versus alternative and rock). Does that necessarily make it a bad game though? Not really. For those casual gamers, or families with kids in their tweens and early teens, this game may just be what the doctor ordered allowing you to finally take the plunge into the music/band based game arena.

WiiGames Radar
The bottom line is that Band Hero is going to be an awesome game to those who happen to fall neatly within its target demographic. However, the developers missed the opportunity to make Band Hero stand out as a unique offshoot of the main franchise with special features and additional content. Instead, they simply slapped a coat of pink paint on Guitar Hero 5 and loaded it up with pop-heavy music. Tweens and youngsters who listen to the radio religiously will likely find this song list – and the fact that Taylor Swift, some guy from Maroon 5, and Gwen Stefani from No Doubt make in-game appearances – extremely squeal worthy. Serious Guitar Hero fans who prefer head banging, feedback, and stage diving in their rock games will want to die half-way through the game – assuming they even make it that far.

Musikalisch Geschmacksache, technisch solide.

For better or worse, this is a re-skinned version of Guitar Hero 5. Now, that’s not bad because that game was great, but it is disappointing if you were expecting something special from Band Hero. All the functionality you’d expect from a GH sequel is here (drop-in/out gameplay, GHStudio, etc.) except that it’s framed in a sugary sweet pink/purple motif. The career is shallow, the songs are poppy Top 40 tracks that you’ll either love or hate, and there’s a focus on getting in, playing and getting out.

However, with very few exceptions, that’s the extent of what’s being offered here; essentially, this is Guitar Hero 5 with a (25% shorter) pop-centric song list… no real mechanical evolution applies. If you’re among the relatively small group that appreciates the Guitar Hero/Rock Band experience but isn’t so fond of excessive guitar and/or rock, you’re left (both logically and linguistically) with Band Hero. Likewise, if you’re a mother looking to jam with your youngsters, this is for you. But if you’re anywhere else on the spectrum, be sure to check the song list first; ultimately, it’s the foundation of the music and the splendor of its instrumentation that fuels these titles. Unless you fall squarely within the niche targeted by Band Hero’s formula, you’ll likely find that, primarily thanks to the musical selections, the experience is lacking the same sense of authenticity and grandeur typical of its pedigree.

The driving theme behind Band Hero seems to be an attempt to make it more marketable and friendly to a younger audience. This doesn't necessarily make it a worse game, but it does make it feel extremely different. Folks who have spent most of their plastic instrument lives taking on major anthems from the likes of The Who and Metallica will find little to love here, as most of the songs fall into the same musical formulas over and over again. On the other hand, gamers who've never heard of the bands in the other games and would really rather sing along to Taylor Swift are going to be elated, as this game will be right up their alley. This isn't your father's Guitar Hero, but it never claimed to be in the first place.

Band Hero is not a challenging entry in the series, nor is it one that is going to be enjoyed by the hardcore members of its fanbase. It's aimed at the teenage crowd who play Guitar Hero at parties, and they'll most likely enjoy this new entry. With a lighter track-list, vibrant visuals and mechanics such as the 'Sing Along', it's a young casual gamer's game, and it's a sensible extension of the Guitar Hero brand. After seeing the track-list, most of you will have already decided whether you're picking this one up or not, and if you are rest assured that it's a pretty good game, if not the most challenging or original.

If you are looking for a solid entry point into the rhythm game craze or have some youngsters running around that you don’t exactly want to expose to some of the more mature music in other rhythm games Band Hero is a solid choice. It’s selection of music is aimed squarely at the pop music enthusiast with an eye towards keeping things tame, and the game’s subtle tweaks means that even the youngest or least skilled budding musician can grab a guitar and play along without worry. However, for the older audience or those who are already avid Hero series enthusiasts it is hard to recommend Band Hero, as unless its track list really strikes your fancy there really isn’t enough to it that sets it apart from the games you likely already own.

Kudos!

Make no mistake: Band Hero is a good game. The elements that made Guitar Hero 5 a good entry in the series also put this game in a positive light. This is especially true on the Wii iteration, which, despite being on less powerful hardware, is the strongest version of the game thanks to the exclusive modes that are quite fun for multiple players. It's still difficult to ignore the peculiar edits made to songs and the amount of blatantly recycled content from Guitar Hero 5. Fans of the series, especially younger ones, will be happy with this spin-off as long as they understand that this is ultimately a large track pack in a different package.

In the end, the PS2 version of Band Hero can be seen as either a stripped-down version of Band Hero or a re-skinned mainstream version of Guitar Hero with Choreography. Either way, the load times are hard to forgive. If you have a PS2 (and that's all you have) and you like Guitar Hero games conceptually but prefer the music in Band Hero, then this is the game for you. If, however, you have a more recent system or plan to get one in the near future, you should get the PS3, 360 or Wii version. There are a lot of features out there... they're just not in here.

Eagle-eyed readers may well have noticed that much of this review bears more than a slight resemblance to the Guitar Hero 5 review I wrote a few months ago. Just like this review, Band Hero is strikingly close to Activision's former release; it's a game that comes across more as GH with a different musical focus, rather than as a new IP in its own right. Band Hero is far from being a bad game, but somewhere along the line it seems the new franchise's focus became a little confused.

However when it comes down to it the value of this expansion is going to be directly proportional to your interest in the tracks contained within. If you're not exactly keen on the songs contained within then there's no reason to own this. But if there are enough songs that you like on the disc then there's no harm in picking it up. Even if you can't bear to have a "girly" game in your library you can export the songs to Guitar Hero 5, deleting the main offenders from the set list.

A fine family game, then, but ultimately it's Guitar Hero 5: Pop Edition and not worth buying as well as, rather than instead of, its hard-rocking brother. It's not hard to see how this could have been an expansion like Rocks the '80s, but instead it's the classic teen dilemma: which crowd do you hang out with?

Like any other rhythm game, Band Hero is entirely dependent on your musical taste and how much you're willing to spend to acquire these 65 songs. If you don't like N.E.R.D., well hey, maybe you'll like Jesse McCartney, right? Actually, I'm totally messing with you. I'm pretty sure it's physically impossible for anyone to like Jesse McCartney. Just know that with the GH5 technology backing it up, you'll at least get a sound product on the back end. With that in mind, look at the song list, look at your wallet, and come to your own conclusion.

If you love Guitar Hero, on the other hand, the only reason to buy it would be for the improved instruments, and surely nobody has that much money and that little sense of consumer dignity in tandem. Band Hero is a technically solid product pitched at a demographic that does presumably exist - people who don't like Guitar Hero's music, but still want to play along - but it sets a dangerous precedent. Where Guitar Hero 5 hauled the series up to a quality plateau, adding a load of features that fans of the series can really appreciate, Band Hero is nothing more or less than a reskin. And even though it's a reskin of a superb game, the lack of concern for the credibility of the music and presentation can't help but cheapen it.

Band Hero (Band Kit) on the PlayStation 2 is $179.99, and that’s ridiculous. By picking this iteration up over the other versions, you’d save $20 but miss out on boatloads of content that make Band Hero fun. Yes, the track list is solid if you like questionable music like I do, but you’re getting the very basics of a multiplayer band game here. You can do better.
