Computer Gaming World (CGW)
Despite the funky controls and slightly repetitive gameplay, BANZAI BUG has enough originality and offbeat style to be declared a winner. If you're looking for something out of the ordinary that has a bent sense of humor, this bug's for you.

Siemanko robaczki.

Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
All things considered, the game falls short. The whole wise-cracking bug theme, harassing the Biggies, and making a Stinkulator is just too "cutesy" for the average gamer and seems to be geared more toward the younger gamer, but the difficulty of the missions is too much for a younger player. Other drawbacks include the limited number of levels (seven), a quick finish, and the almost non-existent replay value. True flight-sim fans and hardcore gamers should look elsewhere for entertainment, but sophisticated younger players may find Banzai worth a look.

Gamezilla
Banzai Bug is a good idea without the support needed to make it work. A really good story is wasted here because the gameplay isn't interesting enough to draw you in. Banzai himself is difficult to control, whether you're using a joystick or the keyboard, and the game follows an outdated save model: if you quit before you finish the entire game, you must return to the beginning of the last level you played without completion. So it's frustratingly difficult to feel as though you're making progress. The graphics in the movie segments that run at the game's start and before each new level are well-done -- they have a nice 3D look to them -- but overall, the game is not very compelling to look at. Grolier bills Banzai Bug as "the flight-sim with an attitude." In the end, because the basic infrastructure of the game -- the graphics, the gameplay, the display -- can't match the quality of the clever storyline, attitude is all Banzai Bug has got.

Which is too bad, really, because on a purely superficial level, Banzai Bug is a winner. It's visually distinctive (gotta love those retro 50's graphics, the bold pastel colors, and the odd polygonal denizens of the gameworld), has an excellent score (kind of a jazzy hipster thing), and had potential to be an interesting "alternative" shooter for the budding lounge swinger/computer gamer crowd - both of them. Oh well, they'll have to stick with 'uh' all those other groovy hipster games, daddy-o.

World Village (Gamer's Zone)
Banzai Bug proves that just because a game is semi-original (basically this game is your basic shooter disguised as a kids title) doesn't mean it's any fun. There's nothing in this title that makes you want to come back and play it again. Most of the levels are pretty small, especially when you compare them to flight simulator games, which this game touts itself as being. Some kids may get a kick out of playing this game, but I think most will become bored after several hours of doing the same things over and over. But then again, what do you expect from Grolier Interactive, a company known for their encyclopedias, not their games.
