Although The Bard’s Tale doesn’t offer anything new in terms of gameplay, it’s the amazing story, presentation, voice acting, and sense of humor that make it a great game. With its solid graphics and easy to learn control scheme, The Bard’s Tale truly is a tale to remember.

This is without a doubt one of the best RPG games I’ve played on the Xbox to date. It’s not as epic as KOTOR and your karma-building decisions aren’t as crucial to the gameplay, but this game packs in more humor and charm than anything I can remember. Whether you want to simply play a great adventure game or just laugh hysterically for a week or more of solid gaming, The Bard’s Tale is the perfect solution, and a game that I can’t recommend highly enough.

For me the game delivered quite a few solid hours of fun and many moments of laugh-out-loud amusement. If you've read to this point, chances are that Bard's Tale will strike a pleasant note for you as well - pleasant enough to start out with a rental, at least. If Bard's Tale 2 ever happens, there is definitely potential for an emergence of new top-notch comedic game series that can stand proudly alongside classics of the genre, such as Maniac Mansion and Monkey Island. Toodaloo.

A humorous mockery of the traditional adventure RPG. Think Baldur's Gate with an attitude. Talking back to the narrator, cow tipping, spitting on selfless heroics and lusting after anything with a cleavage kind of thing. Killer dialog, lots of off-beat humor, average graphics. Gameplay is fun enough, though lacks true shine.

Sarcasm rules the day in this game. (That last bit was a joke to the developers.) Gameplay does, too. No one who enjoys RPGs will not enjoy The Bard’s Tale. It’s got everything you desire from the genre: great characters, a great story, addictive gameplay, and a quirky soundtrack that you won’t find in any other game released this year.

For those hack n’ slash/dungeon crawler lovers, this game breathes a breath of fresh air into the genre. The Bard is the most unlikely hero you will come across - only out for coin, cleavage and wine, not necessarily in that order. The humor is adult and the game is rated Mature, so it’s not meant for the younger crowd out there. However, it’s a great thing to see the genre making fun of itself, in a way that will keep you laughing from one cut scene to the next. So, even if you’re not a fan of the top down hack n’ slash adventuring games, you should give this a try. The game dynamics have totally simplified this genre of game where others have failed and been bogged down in complex inventory systems and potions. The system is simple, and allows you, the player, to focus on the fighting and the story of the game: the fun parts!

Like Diablo and countless others, most of your time in Bard’s fantasy United Kingdom is spent wandering dungeons and forests, cutting up beasts and monsters, acquiring treasure to buy new weapons and armor, all while completing point A to point B quests. It’s all as quaint and satisfying as a mug of home-brewed beer, but Tale does add some spice to the typical brew. The bard actually adds songs to his repertoire as he travels and unwillingly meets his heroic destiny, songs which summon up everything from elemental monsters, to warriors, and gods to heal him. It’s not much more than a pretty spell system, but it’s charming all the same. As with real bards, though, charm is half the appeal here. Come for the comfort-food play, stay for the chuckle-worthy dialogue. Special props to the narration from the late Tony Jay, whose incredulity and exasperation with pretty much everything in the game is a warm delight…

I know what you are thinking…“John, why should I play The Bard’s Tale and not Halo 2?” I’d like to make a stand that there are many titles sinking below radar because of the Halo 2 craze that deserve our attention. The Bard’s Tale is incredibly witty and creative, indicative when the CD cover instructs you to flip the disc over “for a really disturbing image” (though it took me a while to figure, I was horrified when I did). Though officially classified as an RPG, it urinates on what is traditionally demanded in the genre why still delivering a fun storyline you want to see.

It's very easy to tell if The Bard's Tale is the right game for you; for those who find games such as the Monkey Island series and Grim Fandango to be their cup of tea, The Bard's Tale is the action-oriented title for them. Gamers who are looking for a serious romp will find no quarter here, however. Still, anyone who's willing to laugh at a good fart or beer joke will find themselves a game to enjoy.

Brian Fargo, famed creator of seminal RPGs Baldur's Gate and Fallout is finally back in action with a re-telling of his original great, The Bard's Tale. Having formed his own company, inXile Entertainment, Fargo licensed the Snowblind Engine used to make Sony's Champions of Norrath and created a rather unique, if somewhat familiar, top-down fantasy role-playing game. While The Bard's Tale may look like every other top-down perspective RPG hack-n-slash you've played in the past, it is not. The Bard's Tale is a lampooning of the entire genre with a hero who is often more despicable than the villains and a magic system that is unlike anything done before.

Still, The Bard’s Tale won me over in a fairly big way. Above all, the writing and voice acting are far superior to most other videogames. It’s rare for a game to be actually funny, but this one has numerous laugh-out-loud moments, including a quest to find a guy in a village where everyone shares the same name. There are also a few arbitrary musical numbers (reminiscent of the Oompa Loompa songs in Willy Wonka) that stop the game cold while a group of characters mock your progress and sing about what a loser you are...now that’s good stuff! There are certainly more hardcore RPGs out there, but The Bard’s Tale is the kind of lighthearted fare that helps remind us that—once in a while—maybe we shouldn’t take this all so seriously.

Really though, aside from the Old School implementation of game saves, The Bard’s Tale is a great trip down memory lane that actually feels more suited to iOS. Being able to play it whenever and wherever is certain to make fans happy, while newcomers can enjoy a humor-laden story that’s just as funny as it was seven years ago. Just be aware that the in-app purchases are completely unnecessary and each item can be earned normally through regular play.

The Bard's Tale features three different endings, but the story is not significantly different. After all is said and done, The Bard's Tale is enjoyable for a single play-through, but the gameplay and extras are probably not enough to entice most gamers for a second round. It's recommended for RPGers who will enjoy a Monty Python style comedic RPG that spoofs RPGs.

The Bards Tale is one of the best role playing experiences for the Xbox console in 2004. It's unfortunate that the public hasn't taken notice of The Bards Tale, but we are glad to help pronounce its greatness. If you have the time, rent or pick up InXiles The Bards Tales. It's a true hidden gem.

As I recently noted in my column, the action-RPG genre is burgeoning. With numerous fantasy-based titles on the market, developers are looking at different settings in which to place the popular gameplay style. Before those settings are saturated, inXile takes a satirical look at all the fantasy action-RPGs with The Bard's Tale. Though it bears the same name as the classic '80s RPG, this iteration of The Bard's Tale isn't like its predecessors. It's an action-packed game with great characters, a fantastic script, and excellent voice acting. It's an extremely humorous tale that's especially suited to gamers that have played one too many titles in which they've saved the world as the chosen one.

I can’t praise its groundbreaking gameplay mechanics, I can’t gush over its unreal sense of reality, I can’t be breathless about its mind-blowing lighting effects, but I can tell you this: This is the most fun I have had with a role-playing game in a very long time. It drips with an attitude that is wonderfully anarchic and cynical. It eschews the heroic knight in shining armor in favor a more “normal” hero, one that cares mostly for two things, coin and cleavage, and that can’t be a bad thing in my questbook.

As mentioned in GameSpy's numerous previews, The Bard's Tale parodies many conventions found in fantasy RPGs. From "chosen ones" to breaking barrels for treasure to killings rats in the cellar, the game isn't afraid to poke fun at anything and pulls no punches. To call the game a mere parody is a disservice though as its story can stand on its own -- it's just way funnier if you've played several RPGs. The script and dialog are among the best I've experienced all year. It's a truly enjoyable tale with lots of interesting twists and immensely enjoyable banter.

"The bard is a simple man, after a bit of coin in his pocket, a good meal and perhaps a chat to the barmaid. Little does he know that a bit of rat disposal at the local inn would lead to so much trouble. Soon the fate of the world and of the Princess will be on his very reluctant shoulders."

inXile Entertainment is clearly composed of great gamers with great senses of humor, but even the greatest of combinations can miss its mark. The Bard’s Tale doesn’t do anything wrong by any means, and in fact it does a few stereotypical gameplay things rather well. But it doesn’t do anything particularly new, either, and to stand out in any overcrowded genre, a game needs more than a funny script to drive it forward.

All in all, The Bard's Tale is a game with enormous potential. But, unfortunately, most of that potential was squandered who knows where. But you won't be sorry if you take a whack at it... after all, it does tend to make one laugh on occasion. At heart, the game is still hack'n'slash, so if you're a fan, go for it... if not, you'll just be disappointed. My suggestion is that you try it, who knows, you might like it, and you might not.

Combat is typical hack-and-slash, but it is prudent to rely on summoned allies and ranged weapons. Most enemies do ferocious damage up close but, stupidly, stand idle when struck from afar.

It may be called The Bard's Tale, just like the Amiga roleplaying classic, but the true ancestor of inXile's enjoyable action-RPG is Earthbound. Like Nintendo's cult classic, it's a game with likable characters, a sharply-developed sense of humor, and somewhat perfunctory gameplay.

We've all heard of (or rather seen) many film parodies before. Yeah, they're those kick ass films that make fun of some of our other favorite movies, which in themselves (the parodies I mean) become even better than the original (sometimes they do...or maybe not). Comedic greats in their own agenda, Scary Movie, Hot Shots!, and everyone's favorite, Spaceballs, are some of these classic examples. Inevitable by design, parodies poke fun at the movies we love, and in return we go, "Oh hey, I didn't even think of that before!" And then the laughter ensues. Video games have been going Hollywood for years now. There've been game adaptations of films. There've been movie actors voicing game characters.

Poking fun at cliches is a hallmark of many forms of entertainment, but tongue-in-cheek games are few and far between. The Bard's Tale, the spiritual successor to a popular '80s series of role-playing games, mercilessly lampoons fantasy cliches with hilarious results. The hack-and-slash gameplay doesn't have the depth to carry the title on its own, but the laughs are compelling enough to make it well worth a play.

The Bard's Tale is the funniest game of the year till now, it has really been a very long time since a game made me laugh like this. Too bad the gameplay isn't as good. We have seen (too) much action rpg's already with the most of them being richer in options, longer and more challenging than what Inxile Entertainment is offering us here. I am afraid someone forgot that you need more than just a comic relief to create a truly rewarding experience. I still had a lot of fun with it though and judging by the lower-than-average price most shops here are charging for it (€ 40) you can't say it's such a rip-off. Go for it if you're desperate for a good joke and not too demanding about the depth/possibilities of the action and itemhunt part.

The Bard's Tale is a decent dungeon crawler that invests some energy into lampooning role-playing games and high fantasy in general. Despite the fact that it bears the name of a much-loved mid-'80s computer role-playing game, and despite the fact that it's the handiwork of one of that game's creators, InXile's reenvisioning of The Bard's Tale is not a nostalgia piece for fans of old PC RPGs. Borrowing Snowblind's Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance engine, as well as its overall structure, The Bard's Tale is a decent dungeon crawler that invests some energy into lampooning RPGs and high fantasy in general, but like a stand-up act about airline food or the line at the post office, its perspective isn't very interesting, and it lacks any real follow-through. If you're not looking for the sequel to Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and can see your past a few problems, you'll find that The Bard's Tale is a fair action RPG.

The Bard's Tale has some genuinely good ideas, but much of its execution falls short. The funny stuff isn't as funny as it needs to be, and at its apex it's just kind of amusing. The straight high-fantasy stuff it employs is actually pretty good, and the game might've even been better if it had played it straight all the way through. The core hack-and-slash stuff is solid, and the changes it makes to the genre's formula, though not entirely successful, do help give the game a bit of its own personality. It's certainly not an out-and-out failure, but in light of the legacy created by its namesake and the previous landmarks in the genre, The Bard's Tale is a disappointment.

The Bard’s Tale could’ve been a great game, but focuses more on being funny and irreverent than being a solid action/RPG and ends up being pretty average. While humor and good writing is a noble goal, it’s something that enhances a solid game, not mitigates a less-than-stellar one.

For a genre that takes itself seriously to a fault, it's amazing that it's taken all this time for someone to poke fun at RPGs. In those bad old good old days when computers used to be steam powered [we really have come full circle -Ed] and required smacking like naughty children every now and then, Fergus McNeil and his Delta 4 gang were always taking the rise out of chin-stroking fantasy adventures, and for good reason. The comedy value in these mystical, dungeon-roaming, spell-casting epics is there for all to see. From the clichéd dim-witted yokel characters and hackneyed storylines of princesses stuck in towers to the faintly ridiculous game mechanics that see animals coughing up coins upon their death and the ritual destruction of barrels. RPGs may have gotten away with all manner of unselfconscious nonsense for the past quarter of a century, but no more.

If you’re a real RPG junkie (which I freely admit I am), the fresh, irreverent, humorous tone of Bard’s Tale may be entertaining enough for you to ignore the fact that it’s sitting on top of a pretty mundane, flat game experience. If you aren’t as seduced by the jokes, you’ll probably be better off by playing any number of meatier RPG choices out there.

"It's certainly not an out-and-out failure, but in light of the legacy created by its namesake and the previous landmarks in the genre, The Bard's Tale is a disappointment."

"The biggest sting in the Bard's tail is that it doesn't realise that taking the piss out of the genre's clichés doesn't excuse it from relying on them."

Want to really piss off the D&D geeks in your school, dorm, office, or extended family? Then try this: the next time they’re planning a rousing game of pen and paper, ask politely to join in the festivities. Don’t worry’ they’ll let you come along even if you’re a total D&D newbie (a new party member IS a new member, after all, which at the very least means there will likely be a dead, lootable body in the immediate future). Obviously, you’ll show up unprepared and will have to create a new character.
