The smooth controls mean you'll quickly learn and enjoy. While the signature moves aren't as spectacular as those in NBA Jam, they're almost as fun and easy to execute. Barkley's abrasive personality turns a lot of people off; his game though, will turn a lot of people on slammin' street hoops.

Shut Up and Jam! has attractive features. You get 16 players (including Sir Charles himself), each with his own signature moves. You play exhibitions, a multigame series or eight-team tournaments on seven courts across the country. A multiplayer option enables four gamers to pair up using either EA's or Sega's adapter. There are no zebras, so anything goes. This isn't a game for wimps.

An aggressive NBA Jam lookalike that's unfortunately shackled by poor control and choppy graphics. Horrible artificial intelligence and the lack of a shot clock make this a bench-warmer.
I think what we have here can fairly be described as NBA Jam on a budget. Accolade’s outings on the Genesis generally weren’t of top-notch quality, but this is one of its better ones. A few of the mechanics, like the way of recharging your special ability meter, are actually quite nice, the controls work pretty good, and the game successfully transmits a certain feel of gritty street basketball. It doesn’t do enough to really shine though. The sound effects are bad, the music is bland and repetitive, the graphics could have done with some polish in places, and then there are the occasional glitches. Could be better, could be worse. Given what else is out there in the sports genre in general and in basketball games for the Genesis in General, I think this one rates as slightly above average. Barely, but still so.

SNESTotal! (Germany)
Für Barkley: Shut up and Jam! solltet ihr jedenfalls keinen Cent hinblättern!

You'd think the street-themed courts would be interesting, including locales like a ghetto, roof, beach, and junkyard, but you'd be wrong. The scenery is bland and totally static. Shut Up and Jam's mediocre graphics are matched by equally lousy audio. The repetitive "music" (actually just a bass-heavy beat) is unbearable after a few minutes, and the voice samples are indiscernible. I still have no idea what the game says as you turn it on. With so many good basketball games for the Genesis, Shut Up and Jam doesn't have much to offer, but Sir Charles does appreciate your money.
