The game combines elements like the RPG-leveling system from Fire Emblem, the "zone of control" mechanism from Military Madness, and Advance Wars-style terrain bonuses and village capturing to create a game that's incredibly deep and satisfying for those experienced with the strategy genre. Even if I do finish the 15-or-so massive campaigns included with the game (and trust me, I probably won't) Mr. Poole will just keep adding more classic campaigns through free updates. Battle for Wesnoth HD is a dream come true for strategy junkies, but an absolute nightmare for compulsive completionists.

Battle for Wesnoth is a beauty and a must have for all the fans that love a great strategy game. There is no comparison, at least not on Linux distributions, and I hope this game gets a lot more attention and the fan base it deserves.

This standard turn-based fantasy RPG redeems itself with incredible value, offering over 100 hours of gameplay.

With more space to work with and an unbeatable low price, Battle for Wesnoth HD is the only turn-based strategy game you’ll need to buy for the foreseeable future.

All in all, The Battle for Wesnoth is an amazing game that I'd much rather play over the majority of commercial strategy games available today. The strong emphasis on strategy and vast amount of units always keep me coming back for more. The only thing keeping this game from a 10/10 rating are the bugs that occur when playing online. There are often these pestering messages about how players are going out of sync when playing with bots in multiplayer games. This is overlookable, as it's not serious, but there are also bugs that will crash the game entirely by doing something as simple as attacking a specific unit. Although it's pretty rare for something like this to happen, it has ruined a good few wars I was having with friends.

LinuxLinux For You (Sep 01, 2009)
The Battle for Wesnoth is a game that every strategy fan should play at least once. Though it is turn based, its heavy emphasis on combat keeps the game moving and avoids the boring lulls that other turn-based games are susceptible to. It also boasts a unique set of mechanics that allow for a much broader range of conflicts, far beyond the typical “kill everyone” or “survive for X minutes”– objectives that are common to most strategy games.

Battle for Wesnoth is a fantasy turn based strategy game in the land of Wesnoth, in which you command your troops on hexagonal tiles. Most turn based strategy games play on a regimental level, where each unit consists of a number of soldiers, artillery, or aircraft, and the player may order units to change formations to suit different circumstances. Battle for Wesnoth, however, operates on an individual scale where one unit is one soldier.

Battle for Wesnoth is one of, if not THE, best independently developed games I've encountered. Even the older campaigns are constantly rebalanced in such small, seemingly meaningless ways, so that the game can appeal to everyone, novice or High Lord. The developers have even made it so alternative coding languages can be used to create Wesnoth campaigns. A near-obsessive attention to detail, and pure, untainted knowledge for what its audience wants make Battle for Wesnoth one of the best strategy RPGs available, commercial or otherwise. Just make sure you have a lot of time set aside to explore the yellowed pages of Wesnoth's history.

Overall, Battle for Wesnoth is a title that can at times be frustratingly hard, but is very rewarding at the same time. There is a massive load of content and multiplayer functionality and the game is a spot-on accurate piece of retro-gaming. And for the love of Shigeru Miyamoto, it's free people. What are you waiting for?
