This one pretty much signals the start of the great end-of-the-year game releases. A must have for fans of combat games, multiplayer games, and games in general.

Battlefield 2 should be the benchmark for any future first person war shooter on the Xbox. If you are still not sure about this game, than go rent it out but I promise you it will blow you away. The only thing stopping me recommending this as a must buy is that this game will be coming out on the 360 but of course, if you are not going to be buying that machine than if you like war games, this is the ultimate buy!!

Being a huge Battlefield fan, I feel that DICE and EA did a great job in bringing the series over to consoles. While Modern Combat shares some of the same features as its PC relatives, it offers some new aspects, including a stellar single-player campaign. As I said before, fans of the PC Battlefield games may have a hard time getting used to the way Modern Combat handles, but in the end they’ll more than likely still enjoy it. If you’re simply looking for a new online shooter for the Xbox, this is the game for you! Modern Combat’s a great addition to the Battlefield family, and hopefully we will see more Battlefield games on the Xbox.

There’s a pretty full lineup of military-based games coming out for the current Xbox, but I’d take a look at Battlefield 2: Modern Combat before deciding on the next item for your library. The combination of an intriguing campaign mode and large-scale multiplayer action for up to 24 players is hard to mess with, at least in terms of the late-model combat stuff. I’m hoping that the Xbox 360 version of Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is much different than this version; if it isn’t, then I would recommend renting the current-gen model first to see how it fits into your current gaming schedule. Chances are the Xbox 360 version of Battlefield 2: Modern Combat will be much more like the PC version, making the current version well worth its price tag.

If Battlefield 2: Modern Combat was already a great game on the “old” systems, you’d have to expect it to be great on the next-generation of consoles, and you’d be right. This “new” B2:MC is well worth the purchase price, despite the relatively small amount of new content.

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is no doubt one of the best first-person shooters to be found on the Xbox. It followed in its father’s footsteps, and in return not much of the core elements were changed. Its graphics may not be as eye-catching as its PC counterpart, but the Battlefield series has never been made great by its visuals. What matters is here. The audio is fantastic, and most importantly, its gameplay is superb. HotSwapping is a distinctive new feature, and makes the single-player campaign worth playing. Combine all of this and you once again have another worthy addition to the Xbox’s large family of above average shooters.

This is the game Delta Force: Black Hawk Down wanted to be but failed miserably, and while you might only be able to have half as many soldiers in a game, you are going to have four times the fun of any other Xbox multiplayer war game out there, online or by yourself.

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is a thoroughly accomplished online multiplayer FPS, especially when considered alongside the other shooters appearing in the waning days of the big black box. The single-player campaign might not offer much to hold the attention of Live-less gamers hoping for a more tactical experience, but that's the lone disappointment of any significance. With a polished presentation and online play that achieves a compelling balance between frantic shooting and thoughtful coordination, Modern Combat is worth a last-minute withdrawal from your Xbox 360 fund.

During the past year there have been dozens of games focusing on war and military combat. The market has been flooded with first-person shooters and squad-based military shooters, so it’s natural to wonder whether there’s really room for one more. In the console world, EA is trying to make its mark on the genre with its recent release of Battlefield 2: Modern Combat.

XboxDigital Entertainment News (den)
Battlefield 2: Modern Combat looks to repeat the same success it had on the PC, albeit on a smaller scale here on the Xbox, and surprisingly manages to make a big splash on Xbox Live. If you're looking to this game for some fun offline, you're better off looking toward other games such as the Rainbow Six series, as this game's online component shines so bright as to totally blind the player from seeing the ugly little blemish that is the offline gameplay.

Xbox 360Game Chronicles
Whether you are looking for an action-focused single-player war game or a fantastic multiplayer experience that rivals those Tom Clancy titles, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is a masterful bit of game design. They managed to put just enough single-player elements in to keep the game fun for the solo players while keeping everything intact for the online warriors. But at the end of the day Modern Combat is nothing more than a visual facelift of last year's Xbox release, and while it looks damn good, I can't recommend buying it a second time (unless you can trade in you old copy for a good price), there just isn't anything new here. But new recruits looking for one of the best military games going, both online and off...well, let's just say we are looking for a few good men.

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is a solid translation of the Battlefield series to consoles. It doesn’t quite recreate the experience perfectly but it does it well enough to make it a compelling purchase. The hot swap feature makes the singleplayer mode more fun, and of course, the hectic multiplayer battles are key to the series.

Xbox 360ActionTrip
Players who have never experienced a Battlefield game and want to get into the action as quickly and easily as possible, should run right out and buy an Xbox 360 and a copy of Battlefield 2: Modern Combat. Somehow the guys at EA have worked some magic by reproducing the Battlefield experience without the expense or hassle that comes with today's gaming PC. Add to the mix a single player campaign, mini game like challenges and an online component that matches its PC brother, and console fans have a real winner. However, if you have played the PC version, and have no interest in the single player features, the new weapons and vehicles may not be enough reason to trade in your mouse for the 360 controller.

Although first timers to the series can pick up the game without any problems, the direct port from PC isn’t the exact replica and might leave a few veterans upset. With the narrow ended amount of online play, and story focused game play it leaves less time to focus on other things on the PC user side.

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat may disappoint fans of the PC game who expect a P.C port, but don't let that put you off. It is still a fabulous game, with single players being well catered for, and online players having a similar, although more arcadey and faster experience than their P.C counterparts. The game is loads of fun to play offline and online with Hotswapping being so damn cool and a hell of a lot of fun, it is sure to become common in more and more games in the future.

With quite a few past and present shooters to choose from, it is hard to make a decision to focus on just one. SOCOM 3 is there for the more methodical crowd, Rainbow Six: Lockdown even more so. The upcoming Ghost Recon game seems promising, looking to be a better bet than previous titles in the series. But my bid goes towards Battlefield 2 – regardless of platform – because it is fast, fluid, mostly stable, and offers more fun than any military shooter I've played since Rainbow Six: Rogue Spear. SOCOM 3 might still be better for you, but if single-player modes are of any importance, Battlefield 2 deftly takes the crown.

Modern Combat is a great game. Strangely, it's not just a great multiplayer game. Battlefield on PC has never featured a particularly exhilarating singleplayer mode, or even a good one, so when Electronic Arts vowed to deliver the ultimate Battlefield experience for current generation consoles, it had to create a compelling solo mode. Boy did it ever!

All of these factors make it hard to rate this game. On the one hand, it offers a fast-paced, visceral, and very satisfying multiplayer experience. On the other, the title offers a very hackneyed and uneven offline campaign, and even the inclusion of some cool mini-games cannot save it from censure on the part of most players. And so, we can only offer the following advice: If you have online capability, purchase it. If you do not, give this game a pass.

Overall, Modern Combat on the Xbox 360 is a solid title. The gameplay is still fun and the graphics have been drastically improved. The only problem is that we’ve seen almost the exact same game on the original Xbox. This fact makes it very difficult for me to recommend Modern Combat to anyone who has already played it before. For those that haven’t, you can be assured of a fun multiplayer experience.

For me, it doesn’t get much better than this. Sure, it is a port, but a damn good one that will keep me busy for quite some time. The game does so much right, and so little wrong, minus some online joining and creating issues. Is the game for you if you have or have had Battlefield 2 on the Xbox or PS2? I guess the answer is depending on how much of your life was sucked into it the first time around. If the answer is “a lot of it”, then you would be a fool not to pick this up if you’re an Xbox 360 owner. If the game didn’t float your boat the first time around, there’s nothing here all that new besides a new paint job. Well, I know which group on in…so I’ll see ya online!

And if war is hell, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is fun as hell. It suffers from several obvious shortcomings, but accomplishes what only a week ago seemed impossible by providing console gamers with the full Battlefield experience. You've heard our call, now get out there and fight.

The first sign that Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is a Battlefield game is its oddly numbered title. It's actually the first Battlefield game for the consoles, while Battlefield 2 for the PC was really Battlefield 3. Apparently the guys at DICE don't know how to count, but they do know how to make kickass video games.

At the very least, one should rent thisgame. However, if you don't have your system online, then skip it.Modern Combat is not a game worthy of its single player. Now, the million dollar question. Is Battlefield 2: Modern Combat worth a purchase if you’ve owned it on the Xbox and already played it to death? Well, that’s up to you but, essentially, you’re paying for the same game with some updated graphics. Those of you that haven’t had a chance to check out the franchise yet owe it to yourself to pick up a copy of Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, as it is one of the best online games available on the Xbox 360.

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat for the PS2 is a massive online playground with just the right amount of toys to keep the action nicely addictive. While it does not resemble the PC games exactly, the action fits right at home on the consoles. The best part is that the single-player mode is also a nice distraction when you’re not battling it out online. Buy or rent, this is a game you might want to check out when you want to give SOCOM 3 a break.

If you own a 360 and you haven't played this game on the Xbox yet then you'll want to check this one out. The single player campaign isn't exactly amazing, but the online multiplayer is. I had so much fun playing Conquest that I forwent much needed sleep "just to play one more". Quite honestly I haven't done that since Halo 2 first came out. The graphics are very good and the immersive feeling in most every environment is unbelievable. The audio is quite the mixed bag with some of the most terrible voice acting I have heard in a while. Overall though Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is a fun wartime game with an addictive online mode and plenty of things to do otherwise.

I can safely give Battlefield 2: Modern Combat a big thumbs up for anyone who enjoys playing team-based first-person shooters online (yes, even if you're a die hard Halo 2 fan). There's something to be found here that one won't find flipping warthogs or stabbing people with three and half foot long energy swords. However, if you're one of those non-Xbox Live gamers there's almost nothing of value in this title for you.

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is not what I expected. It’s actually far from it, but it does retain the core elements of the Battlefield franchise and brings them to the consoles for the first time. Despite the extremely arcadey feel to both the single-player and multiplayer games, there is some fun to be had. If EA can fix some of the server issues they could have a great online game in their hands; but EA has never been known to do that. Although the game is extremely different from the PC versions, it’s still Battlefield and, when it comes down to it, it’s a fun game.

Overall, Battlefield 2 should only be picked up by two types of people: those who never bought it for the Xbox, and those who are diehard fans. On frôle presque l’excellence…

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is a welcome addition to the Xbox 360 roster of shooters and whilst it doesn’t offer that much difference to other shooters other than its freeform play it is a game which contains pick up and play action. The single player is perhaps weaker than the online play but still has enough for a purchase especially as it’s not as tactical as Ghost Recon and should appeal to more casual players. The arcade element and the fact that players have reasonable freedom means that most gamers should find Battlefield 2 to be an entertaining game. Sadly the conquest modes aren’t usable offline versus AI bots which would have added another layer for those not online connected. In general I have had a good experience with Battlefield 2 especially online which is where the real fun begins.

The visual and audio package is suitable for Battlefield 2. In general, the areas look great, but there is noticeable draw-in where you'd least expect it. The sound of your gun hammering into an adversary is music to the ears, and the tunes dynamically change as soon as you're piloting a vehicle. All told, if it wasn't for the addicting online play, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat would have surely lost the war. There's much more variety and excitement when playing with 23 other people on some really wonderful maps. My suggestion: skip the single-player campaign and head straight to online play.

The Xbox 360 ports continue with EA and DICE's Battlefield 2: Modern Combat. This frantic and wildly intense FPS is clearly the superior version because of its slight graphical enhancements and its improved online component, but these changes are too cosmetic to influence me to purchase it, but that's only because I've played the Xbox version, but it's still a very kick ass product, full of tons of action and a hell of a lot of explosions. In fact, Modern Combat provides one of the best multiplayer experiences on the Xbox 360, but if you've played the older versions to death then there's no reason to buy this game.

In the end, Battlefield 2 is an excellent multiplayer game, and a very poor single-player game. If you’re lacking a Live subscription and capabilities, then it’s not necessarily going to be worth your time, unless you’re a military/FPS junkie looking for a fix. Otherwise, just consider this game as what it’s meant to be - an engaging, raucous, adrenaline-filled thrill of a multiplayer game. Modern Combat undeniably ranks up there as one of the best ways to spend your time with a 360 and a Live subscription.

Battlefield for the Xbox 360 is a must for anyone who has never had the pleasure of playing it before now, as for everyone who has experienced it on the Xbox or PS2, well you should get it anyways. Yes the fifty quid price tag is extortionate but then again if you do a bit of searching online you can find it for a steal at around thirty quid. The game is a thing of beauty once you take it online, you will find yourself losing all sense of time and the only thing that will be on your mind is the screams of your enemies as they get mown down by your assault rifle. This game not only offers you great visuals and a flawless online game, but you will also find yourself using tactics like flanking enemy tanks and dropping from helicopters to gain a foot hold while playing online. The campaign mode is pretty dull, but the only reason why you need to buy this game is for Xbox Live…simple as!

Online play, like I mentioned earlier, is fun. Although there isn’t a lot in terms of play modes, it still serves up a bountiful amount of well-spent pay time. Vehicles are featured, and rather encouraged. Shredding around in a dune buggy with a friend and fragging the living hell out of some dude a few thousand miles away has never been executed quite as well as it has in Modern Combat. Feel free to start a clan, join a clan, and chat with friends via the USB microphone, because it’s all here. In closing, I totally recommend this one. Whether it’s a rental or a purchase, pay Modern Combat a visit. It beckons you! The only problems I faced were annoying glitches and bugs. Even then, it deserves your attention.

It must be said that bringing this series to PS2 was a major risk. I had my doubts that Electronic Arts and Digital Illusions could pull this off but they have. It's not quite perfect, but if you're after a multi-player action fix due to the lack of SOCOM this year then this will fill the void. If you're not online the single player will also keep you busy for some time. Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is a very good title.

It's definitely a Trim Spa version of the absorbing, deeply time-devouring PC gem, but Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is a solid, balanced action game that lets players fight the battle on their own slightly conceded terms. And of course, it has some moments of unintentional physics-based hilarity. If you're a gamer longing for the PC experience to be translated to your console, you've still got some waiting to do -- but once you accept the swapping function, you have a decidedly engaging theater of virtual war on your hands.

PlayStation 2Next Level Gaming
I came out of playing Battlefield 2: Modern Combat a little let down. I expected more from the single player than I got. Weapons upgrades and unlockables are cool, but a storyline that really doesn't go anywhere or suck you in, combined with lackluster computer AI bring the experience down. Almost like it's an afterthought. Especially in the wake of other war-based FPS's that have concentrated on storylines. But what saves this game is some kick-ass multiplayer. There are games that do multiplayer well, and this is one of them. But if you're looking for a single player game the likes of Brothers in Arms, you're not going to find it here.

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is a long-awaited effort that was continuously pushed back by the developers to tweak the gameplay over the last 3 years. When the PC version was released less than a year ago, I was immediately drawn to the large-scale battles, the control-point capturing, and the diversity of character selection. The Xbox version is toned down in comparison to playing on the PC and although it packs a pretty cool single-player campaign, its online multiplayer leaves a lot to be desired (which is completely unlike the PC title).

PC gamers already well-versed in the wily lures of Battlefield may be inclined to give you a smug smirk at the mention of a console version of the game. Don't let it bother you. About the time they see you there enjoying the single-player part of the game, that look will change into the familiar puppy-dog, "when's-it-my-turn-to-play" eyes as they plop down next to you on the couch. A few hours later, all will be in agreement: Battlefield 2: Modern Combat has successfully made the jump to console gaming.

Modern Combat nails the tension and thrill of war like a sniper nails a headshot. It's smooth and it happens so quickly it can leave you shocked - if you're not paying close attention you'll end up with your limbs spread across the war zone. If the on-screen action makes your palms clammy and your heart beat a little faster, the game must be doing the right thing. Whether man-to-man with automatics blazing, frantically darting for an inch of cover and hoping a combination of skills and blind luck will save your arse, or tank-to-tank, the pause between shell loading causing your buttocks to tighten as you take aim a shot you hope will rip your enemies apart. Modern Combat is a tense and dangerous war game from the very start.

Basically, your decision on whether or not to purchase Battlefield 2: Modern Combat boils down to one easily answered question: Are you going to play multiplayer on Xbox Live? If you are, rush out and pick this game up right now. It's got just about everything you could want from a multiplayer game, including plenty of competition and a solid netcode implementation. However, if multiplayer gaming isn't your thing, you might want to rent this one for now. The single-player mode really isn't anything to write home about, although it'll satisfy any FPS jones you might have.

Electronic Arts is finishing its first quarter publishing barrage with the Xbox 360 version of Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, a nearly identical port from last fall's PS2 and Xbox versions. A ground-breaking title on PC in 2002, EA's Battlefield has been copied, improved upon, or dumbed down by competitors, depending on which imitation game you've bought, with many long-in-the-tooth diehard gamers still maintaining that the first PC original was the best.

What we have here is a pretty good war-based shooter - the only problem is the market is already well-catered for on the 360 with Ghost Recon and Call of Duty 2, both of which are better games. This could have been a really great game if executed properly, but as is usual with EA they have spent more time and money on the production values rather than refine the gameplay to make it the best game it could possibly be. If you already have both Call of Duty and Ghost Recon and fancy something a little different in the same genre, then it’s worth a rental at least.

If you own an Xbox 360 and haven't yet picked up a copy of Battlefield 2: Modern Combat then this is definitely the version to go for. The improved graphics and effects are much better than in the previous versions and the addition of the achievements means you'll want to replay the missions over and over in an attempt to unlock them all. Essentially though it's still the same game as we saw on the PlayStation 2 last year and if you've already played the PlayStation 2 or Xbox version you'll probably not want to buy the game simply for a few additions and upgrades. Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is basically a good team-based online shooter. It could have done with more modes to play online but you can create or join clans and on the whole it's a pretty good experience. Offline the game is also enjoyable thanks to the Hot Swap feature that allows you take on different roles at the touch of a button.

This is the first time this PC Series has appeared on consoles, and there's a natural reason for that. On the PC, this game thrives because of its online portion. For the consoles, however, you've got to make the single-player portion work in order to have a game with any depth or interest - since the vast majority of its players won't be online. But instead of giving you a single-player campaign that is indistinguishable from all the other video game soldiers out there, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat attempts to tap into its strengths to offer something a little different.

Dommage.

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat offers PlayStation 2 and Xbox owners the opportunity to experience a decent approximation of what PC gamers experience with Battlefield 2. I say this because in all honesty it's not quite the same but then again it was never going to be given the difference between the two platforms. Digital Illusions have done a very good job in tailoring the Battlefield experience to the PlayStation 2 though and the adjustments they've made actually work quite well. The single-player campaign isn't that great to be honest, but it's a good place to familiarise yourself with the game.

So what are we left with when the smoke clears and the toe tags have been distributed? A single player FPS with a slight arcade-y feel to it and an online feature that almost gets it right. Fans of the PC versions would be advised to steer clear of the console iteration. If you just don't have the system to play the PC titles, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is enough to tide you over until you take out that second on your house in order for you to upgrade.

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is pretty much the same game as appeared recently on the PS2 and Xbox. Of course, it's been overhauled to make use of the systems extra power and graphical abilities. I should just add that it's not quite the same as the PC version and has much more of an arcade combat feel.

Again, though, the most notable changes between the Xbox 360 and current-gen version are the graphical and audio updates, which you'd expect, and the improved enemy AI. In theory the enemy AI is a vast improvement, but with the lack of equally improved friendly AI, the change is a minor annoyance. HotSwapping is fun, but only when you have comrades to HotSwap to. And with the relative inability to do just that, there's really only so much fun to be had in the single-player portion of the game.

It seems a little strange that Battlefield 2: Modern Combat should have the "2" in the title, given that this is the first Battlefield game to make an appearance on consoles. The game also, unfortunately, bears little resemblance to its superb namesake on the PC. While Modern Combat does offer some amount of charm with its highly produced interludes and its slick unit-switching mechanism, ultimately this multiplayer-focused military shooter falls short of its promise with design flaws in its campaign and clunky vehicle handling. The obvious graphical enhancements for the Xbox 360 do add something to the overall package, though.

If you've got a PC and are looking for a Battlefield-experience on your favorite console, this being the PS2, then Battlefield 2: Modern Combat seems the logical choice. Don't be mistaken though, as both games have a lot of differences and on top of that, the console version doesn't come close to Battlefield 2 that currently is making waves in multiplayer. What exactly is different here and what you can expect, is what we'll tell you in this review.

Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is not a bad game, but it will certainly disappoint anyone that is expecting the PC experience on their PlayStation 2. The addition of hotswapping makes the campaign mode a pleasant diversion for a few hours, but after a while you're going to want to go online and you're probably going to be let down by the lack of gameplay modes and technical problems that EA is working on, but has yet to fix. If you've got the option, go with the outstanding PC version of Battlefield 2. If you don't, give this one a rental before paying full price - it might not be your cup of tea.

Therefore, if you do not have the original version, and are looking for some good fast-paced shooter action with vehicles, then Battlefield 2 might just be what you are looking for. However, if you are looking for a true next-gen game, or a solid single-player campaign, look elsewhere. I would argue, and people are free to disagree, that the XBox’s and PS2’s BLACK from EA is a far better shooter in terms of campaign and even in some aspects of its graphics than this 360 title. A lot of new “pure” next-gen games are coming down the pipe in the near future, so it might be worthwhile to consider holding out for some of those, especially if you are on a budget.

All that makes it hard to recommend for purchase, but it’s truly a matter of personal taste. If you haven’t played any other console version of Modern Combat and/or you’re looking to boost your Gamerscore with some achievements, you may want to add it to your collection. I’d just as soon wait for the next—and not rehashed—Battlefield to show up.

Overall, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat has made a decent first effort in bringing the Battlefield experience to consoles. All the necessary elements are there to make a great shooter--superficially at least--like infantry and vehicles together in large-scale, combined-arms battles. The hot-swap feature is also really cool and an idea we hope will get expanded on should the console franchise continue on. What's missing in Modern Combat are the little things that really made the Battlefield series so great in the first place, like getting the look, feel, and sound of the weapons and vehicles just right. Despite those deficiencies, Modern Combat is still probably worth a look, especially if you've never played a Battlefield game (or clone) before.

So, the game isn't a total loss. There is a nice arcade shooter and a lot of polish in this package. For gamers looking to experience the world of Battlefield who only own an Xbox 360, then the game is worth checking out. However if you happen to own a decent PC setup and want a really good Battlefield2 experience, you are better off picking up the PC version.

Ultimately, if you're unfair enough to want to compare this with Battlefield 2 on the PC you'll see that Modern Combat is a weaker, uglier imitation that lacks the detail and versatility that the original game wields with such ease. It doesn't make you fear the shriek and boom of lead because everything has been turned down a notch. Fun, yes, but not exhilarating in the way that the best games should be. It also lacks the painterly detail of Battlefield 2's levels, which seem so natural in the density of their trash-strewn details. As such Modern Combat fails to clinch greatness, but it's a moderate amusement anyway. Maybe it's the way those Humvees bounce...

It would be easy enough to write off Battlefield 2: MC as a shallow port of a solid Xbox game with a high def coat of paint added... because that's exactly what it is... but the franchise didn't get to be the king of teamplay-based online shooters by slick adverting or with chicks who kick high: the game is fun. It's always been fun. Played online with two teams of solid standing you'll be laughing it up with genre defining F-U-N. The problem is that we've had this fun before, and it's impossible to recommend paying for the same experience for the third time when nothing new has been added to the mix.

Overall, a rather competent shooter but at the same time its samey missions and repetitive gameplay will lull you into an unwanted sleep. Battlefield 2: Modern Combat has a nice unique style going with the hot swapping feature which would lead you to think you’re in for something quite unique when really that’s where the uniqueness ends, the rest is a dull uninspiring trek from point A to point B, protecting point B then proceeding to point C before the mission ends. It fails to retain that much loved Battlefield 2 gameplay of the PC original. The lack of a medic class also removes what I consider to be one of the best parts of the PC original. Another ruined aspect is that of the vehicles, I have no idea how these things got through testing.

Battlefield 2 explodes all over the Xbox in Dice's developed Modern Combat. Up to 24 soldiers can enter the game's myriad of different environments and destroy one another, and unlike other games of this type, there are over 30 different types of vehicles to maneuver including tanks, jeeps, boats, and choppers. There's always something to do and someone to kill, and if the online thing isn't your bag you can always entertain yourself with the straight forward single player mode, but overall, Modern Combat isn't the epitome of brilliant game design. It's too easy to lose focus, and the arcade like gameplay trivializes death. It's worth playing, but not for too long.

As is the case with many titles that make the leap from PC to console, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat pales in comparison to the beloved PC games. On its own, however, the game is an enjoyable, if unspectacular, first-person shooter. The hotswap mechanic brings an interesting element into the mix, helping to make the single-player game a lot more fun than a lot of run-of-the-mill campaigns found in many shooters. Alas, the multiplayer mode doesn't quite live up to our lofty expectations, mainly due to the fact that there are only two gametypes, as well as an annoying abundance of network issues. Although the series' first foray onto consoles falls a bit short, the future looks promising.

Modern Combat's one beautifully integrated innovation is "HotSwapping," the ability to leap behind the eyes of any combatant you can see at any moment. Hopping from soldier to soldier in the midst of battle may seem jarring, let alone jumping sides every few missions, but a high-speed traveling effect eases the transitions, and the result is a higher action quotient, as well as a greater appreciation for the intricacy of war in general, and the unenviable role of each individual in it in particular. Making this complexity accessible is where Battlefield 2: Modern Combat excels.

Xbox 3601UP
Arriving as it does fashionably later to the party than its PS2 and Xbox siblings, BF2MC makes one thing abundantly clear: the end of transition period to next-gen (at least for the 360) is nigh. The window for making up-sampled versions of existing games is rapidly closing, if not already shut. This one may slip through, but not without some scratches on its back.

It’s just about time for this better-late-than-never porting business to stop on the Xbox 360. Battlefield 2: Modern Combat is nothing more than a slightly-tweaked version of the (admittedly cool) military shooter we were all playing on the Xbox and PlayStation 2 last year. So if you already played the heck out of it then, you can probably stop reading the review at this point.

Battlefield 2 for the consoles will give you much the same experience you’d get on the PC- quasi-realistic urban/light urban FPS warfare with a selection of great vehicles, weapons kits, expansive maps, and, unfortunately, oft-unstable multiplayer. There are a few areas in which Battlefield 2 for the consoles falls short of the standards created by the PC version, and regrettably, no instances where it improves upon the PC version.

Autorzy zastosowali w niej parę interesujących rozwiązań, dodali multiplayera (któremu jednak trochę brakuje do ideału...) i rozbudowali tryb dla samotnego gracza, czyniąc tytuł dość ciekawym produktem.

If your online gaming is restricted to consoles, Battlefield 2: Modern Combat isn't a bad option. It lacks the insane large scale combat of the superior PC game and is more akin to something like Star Wars Battlefront, but if you find the right group of people, online matches can be a lot of fun. PlayStation 2 owners can find a better online experience in the latest SOCOM game and Xbox owners can go one better with Halo 2. A solid first effort at Battlefield on consoles, but next-gen versions will have to be significantly better.

It's very hard to come up with a reasonable justification for why you should rush out and buy the Xbox 360 version of Battlefield 2: Modern Combat. For a start it's annoying that it's not a better port of the PC version -- there can certainly be little argument that the 360 isn't capable of running such an application -- or that it doesn't expand on the previous generation console titles enough. Given that Xbox 360 games have (to date) been more costly than their previous generation counterparts, it becomes quite hard to actively enthuse about it, and that's something that's only made worse by the fact that there are plenty of retailers offering the PS2 or Xbox versions for less than fifty notes at the moment -- or less than half the RRP of the 360 version.
