Battles: Prince of Persia takes some patience to learn, but once you understand the game play and learn the cards and their affects, it quickly becomes highly addictive and very rewarding. Some fans of the franchise may be disappointed that the game is so very different from the other Prince of Persia titles, but for those who enjoy a good strategy game can hopefully overlook that and play this interesting and challenging title.
Ubisoft easily could have tossed off a DS action game with the Prince's name affixed to it, but they did a much better thing by combining card- and turn-based strategy in a fairly deep title that hooks you in. By the way, don't be turned off by the word "card." When you slap down the Superior Bows card and your archers lay waste to targets, you'll be happy you got this game.
I am rather disappointed that the developer didn't even try to make this title look decent - I've seen placeholder graphics that are more attractive, and most everything about the presentation is a failure. That's all peripheral to a strategy game, though, so I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this title to someone who is already sick of Advance Wars.
Ubisoft deserve praise for taking the Prince of Persia franchise into a completely different genre. On the whole this is a very enjoyable turn-based strategy game that any fans of the genre will appreciate. The game may lack impressive visuals but what it lacks in looks it certainly makes up for in depth. The developers have made great use of the DS and its special qualities. The touch screen is an ideal way of moving units about and scrolling around the screen and dragging and dropping your cards around. The game suits the DS so well that it makes you think that a Civilization game or other PC turn-based strategy game could easily be bought to the DS without any problems. DS owning strategy fans should definitely give the game a look.
Battles of Prince of Persia is een echt strategie spel, houd je daar van, dan heb je eigenlijk gewoon een goede game te pakken. Prince of Persia is wel een spel waar je ook wat geduld voor moet hebben, niet alles gaat even vlot en soms moet je ook goed uitpuzzelen wat het beste is om te doen. Jammer dat de graphics niet bijzonder zijn, maar verder is het een prima game. Goede gameplay, buiten het akkefietje met het scrollen en een goed verhaal.
While the Sands of Time series doesn't seem like it would lend itself well to a turn-based strategy spin-off, Battles of Prince of Persia is actually worth a look if you're familiar with turn-based strategy games. The modest presentation and steep learning curve in the game may be a turnoff for some people, but if you can get past those flaws, there's a worthwhile game underneath the sometimes ugly and intimidating exterior.

Battles of Prince of Persia is a solid strategy title that only falls on a few slight problems. The game can become quickly repetitive and tiring for some gamers, while others will be able to unearth the hidden depth that the game does contain. It can become somewhat addicting to a degree, as you’ll be scratching your head in the later levels trying to figure out a way to defeat the enemy. It’s bland visual flare is likely to drive many gamers away upon witnessing the game, but if you are willing to spend some time learning the game, you’ll likely find yourself wasting away hours of time with Battles of Prince of Persia.
Surprenant à bien des égards, Battles Of Prince Of Persia est l'un de ces jeux pas forcément exceptionnel, mais qui parvient à susciter une sorte de sympathie sincère. Loin d'être l'égal d'un T-RPG comme Fire Emblem, il amène suffisamment de nouveautés et d'âme pour dévoiler une vraie honnêteté et des qualités évidentes. Certes, il n'est pas le jeu à acheter obligatoirement en cette fin d'année sur DS, mais il pourrait peut-être vous faire chavirer.
If you expected yet another quality Prince of Persia action title, you'll need to wait longer. On the other hand, gamers with an open mind and a tolerance for visual frailty will enjoy hours of solid tactical gameplay in one little cartridge. Battles isn't as multifaceted as Advance Wars, nor does it convey the fairy-tale personality of its console cousins, but we encourage you to look past the plain façade: there's some unexpectedly engaging gameplay buried under it.
Das Spiel an sich mag gar nicht mal so schlecht sein und macht durchaus ein paar Levels lang Spaß, doch was hat das Spiel mit dem agilen Prinzen zu tun? Eigentlich nichts. Gut, der Prinz taucht zuweilen in der eigenen Armee auf, doch wer sich für derartige rundenbasierte Kartenspiele begeistert, dem dürfte egal sein, ob da nun der berühmte Prinz von Persien oder sonst ein Spieleheld auftaucht. Letztlich wurde deshalb vermutlich nur irgendwie versucht, eine bekannte Lizenz in ein Spiel einzuarbeiten, dass ansonsten kaum beachtet worden wäre. Fans des Prinzen warten lieber auf die PSP-Umsetzung des Action-Adventures, nur beinharte Taktikfans erfreuen sich an dem mauen DS-Spiel.
Leider wird der Taktik-Ableger dem hohen spielerischen Niveau der Action-Adventures bei weitem nicht gerecht. Das liegt zum einen an der schwachen Präsentation und zum anderen an der nicht ausgereiften Steuerung. Das Spielprinzip macht eigentlich einen guten Eindruck, dennoch könnte man meinen, dass Ubisoft zu viel des Guten mit in das Spiel einbringen wollte, was sich im Endeffekt negativ auf das Gesamtbild auswirkt. Daher sollten sowohl Strategiefreunde als auch Hardcore-Fans der Serie besser zuerst eine Runde Probe spielen.
Unfortunately this doesn’t play as well as Advance Wars DS either, which is what it is competing directly against. The card system is a good idea, but there is simply too much to it, and could of done with being simplified down. The tutorial tries to explain the system to you, but it’s just as uninteresting as the story itself. Definitely a game for the hardcore strategy game fan that has exhausted the other far superior games in the same genre on Nintendo DS.
Though the game's stylus-based controls are tight, and for a while seems to offer a nice distraction, it soon becomes a chore to pick it up at all. With little story incentive and no hope for variety, you probably won't make it past the halfway mark. I can recommend BoPoP only for those who are having trouble finding games to buy on the DS, but right now my problem is quite the opposite.
Prince of Persia is an amazing franchise that has conquered the 3D conversion, and in my opinion is the best game to have done so thus far. However, there is no reason to forget the impact that it had over the 2D world, and there is certainly no reason to fix what isn’t broken. Rather than delivering a solid title full of familiar gameplay an alternate route was taken. While it does have a few moments of entertainment, there just aren’t enough reasons to invest time and money into this product. Battles of Prince of Persia could have been a must-own title, but the bar for quality DS products has been raised significantly in the past months, and something this void of true entertainment simply can’t be endorsed.
I wanted to give Battles of Prince of Persia a fair chance. I really did. The idea of the game shifting from its action roots to a strategy game swayed me a little, but I was fair and forgiving and decided to see what magic Ubisoft could wave over the DS. Instead, all I find is a strategic card battler that's missing out on any fun, intuitive design, or, worst of all, a point. Stick to your Advance Wars and leave this battlefield empty.
This honestly has to be one of the weakest games I have has the displeasure of having to sit through in a long, LONG time. Why on Earth the Prince of Persia licence was thrown toward such a rushed title when leaving it another six months to create a proper outing in the series is anyone's guess. But, as seems to have already happened thankfully, steer clear of this at all costs...
So yes, it's been another of those fevered dissections. Point by point complaining. And that's because BoPoP (the acronym cheers me every time) is far too similar to games that are wonderful. So while it's not hideous or unplayable, it constantly reminds you of a far better game you could be playing instead.
Battles feels more like a marketing exercise than a videogame. It's as if the over-minds at Ubisoft have identified a demographic that's been hitherto untouched by the series and tailored a game to try and introduce pre-teen gamers to the franchise in the hope that they'll be sucked into buying future Prince of Persia platformers a couple of years down the line. Perhaps I've gone into cynicism overdrive... Maybe Battles isn't some kind of insidious recruitment device and it's simply a bad game. Either way, unless you're a die-hard fan of the CCG genre, steer well clear.
