With Battlestations Pacific Eidos again hits the ball. This is a must-have for just about any WW2 fan and also for every other gamer. The enormous amount of units you can choose from, the giant battlefields, very detailed oceans and vehicles and excellent multiplayer make this game a solid hit for the Summer period.

So long as you have a beast of a machine or can tolerate the choppiness of the experience, Battlestations: Pacific is well worth your money. If you like flight sims, sinking ships with submarines, or even just taking control of your own fleet, there doesn't seem to be a better game out right now. You might do well to get yourself a copy of DOSBox and enjoy the wonderful world of Battlezone at the same time, however, as games like this aren't released very often.

Battlestations: Pacific exceeds in almost all the areas Midway did not. It creates a new kind of action-strategy hybrid, and goes places most games don't. If you're looking for some fast paced action, or advanced strategy, either way Battlestations delivers. In a market where almost every WWII game is a FPS, Battlestations breaks new ground and creates a fun gaming experience.

After a hard day working to pay the rent, even hardened PC grognards like to sit down for some mind-freeing carnage. No number crunching or need for much historical accuracy, just pull the trigger and watch the bad guys go "boom." Battlestations Pacific, published by Eidos, is just that sort of game: an easy-to-play, hearty, arcade game, with gorgeous graphics, served in a compelling strategy wrapper.

Beyond the much-improved length and scope of the two main campaigns, Pacific’s expanded online multiplayer component features five modes that offer a little something for all tastes. Island Control lets you stage massive, enjoyably time-consuming coups to nab and defend territory across large maps. For different styles of combat, there are escort missions, smaller duels, and siege defenses, and a competitive mode driven by scoring points for completing objectives. The co-op and competitive multiplayer content nicely rounds out the package. A few small blemishes aside, Battlestations: Pacific is the well-rounded, substantially improved sequel that fans of the first game were hoping for. It chisels out some of the rough edges of Midway and adds a lot of new material into the mix without substantially changing the formula.

After a slow start this game blossoms into a superb action-strategy title. It is not going to be for everyone though so you might want to check out the demo before committing yourself to a full purchase. The balance between combat and strategy is perfectly managed. Give it a chance (and take a few hours to get used to the controls) and this becomes a great way to spend some time.

It’s inevitable that Battlestations: Pacific is going to be just as underappreciated as Midway before it, but those who take the time to experience its mix of strategy and arcade gameplay will find a great addition to any library. Many companies have tried and failed to bring the RTS genre to console gamers, and Pacific is the closest, and most fun to date.

There have been a number of successful and unsuccessful attempts to bring real-time strategy to modern consoles, and Battlestations: Pacific is one of the best yet. Impressively, no feature seems as if it received the short end of the stick; each gameplay element stands out on its own. Combined, they lead to an exciting and varied experience that should appeal to action junkies and armchair tacticians alike. Although not without its problems, this is a sequel done right: It's just as fun, but it's bigger, broader, and more fully realized.

Rarely do genre hybrids offer two styles of gameplay that are equal in quality, but this one comes close. This excellent synergy gives the game the potential to be unique every time you play, and that variety and replay value is only enhanced by the solid and well-designed multiplayer modes. While the core gameplay and presentation do little to set Battlestations: Pacific apart from its predecessor, the blending of two genres and high replayability make this entry in the series a solid choice for anyone interested in WWII.

There aren't a lot of games that offer as much variety as Battlestations: Pacific does. Although not without its problems, this is a sequel done right: It's just as fun as the original, but it's bigger, broader, and more fully realized.

While playing the well-scripted and varied US and Japanese campaign modes is fun for most of the 20 hours or so, it does wear thin towards the end. And beyond chasing medals and unlockables, there’s nothing else to it. Multiplayer is comprehensively exciting though and finding your forte as a gunner, submarine navigator or dog fighter pilot before assembling a crew is a path that will take as long as the entire single-player game itself. Ultimately Eidos has done a fine job of providing the instruments of sea-faring destruction, and it’s the community that will define BSP’s success.

Sometimes when a game features so many pieces, it starts to fall apart. Many open world games, for example, have dozens and dozens of things to do but none of them serve any purpose except to add another bullet point on the back of the box. Battlestations Pacific isn't like that. Every single thing that your troops can do has meaning and you need to use every unit available to you in order to achieve victory. This is not an easy game, as the first two levels would have you think, but it is an extremely rewarding game. You'll need plenty of time to grasp all the concepts that are thrown at you, but eventually you'll see that magic eye picture.

Unfortunately, experiences like controlling an airplane, controlling an aircraft carrier, or controlling a fighter plane, are not distinctive enough. What should be distinct and fun experiences instead end up being stale and generic. The game’s universal control scheme can be blamed for the lack of differentiation, but Eidos Hungary’s insistence on trying to make Battlestations into an everything simulator has ensured that no one area is developed enough. If Battlestations: Pacific’s developers had put more effort into letting you enjoy one single game experience for a long period of time, it would be a better game. Instead, Battlestation is a jack-of-all-trades, master of none.

Xbox 360Thunderbolt Games
In the end, Battlestations: Pacific strips away plenty of the over-complicated mechanics of its predecessor and opens up the game with a much more streamlined approach. It’s deeply rooted in strategy but not so much that it isn’t accessible for a wider audience. While it may look hectic it’s pretty easy to command a whole fleet of both ships and planes, and the two lengthy campaigns should keep you busy for a few weeks at least. Sadly there’s just not enough variety between each vehicle, and the painstakingly slow combat doesn’t give it the intensity of other WWII titles out there. But if you’re craving for some naval based warfare you can’t go wrong here, it’s just too slow and monotonous to recommend on a larger scale.

Battlestations Pacific provides an epic sense of scale with some unique mission types, but the hybrid nature of its action-strategy gameplay presents a sword that is often dull on both sides.

The five multiplayer modes and eight scaleable maps give fans a lot of replay value, but the game’s fundamental flaw is still intact: boring gameplay. Bombing runs can be fun, but navigating slow ships with even slower ammo reloads and babysitting units doesn’t add up to a riveting experience. Count this bored midshipman out.

Does Battlestations: Pacific succeed in its attempt to deliver a beacon of genre-straddling originality in a videogame market bulging with same, same, same? Sadly not. The RTS foundations are in place and there are plenty of core and online missions to test player mettle (and patience), but, as with Battlestations: Midway, the control interface is still unwieldy, the action is still stodgy and unfulfilling, and the aesthetics are still hampered by distinctly last-gen failings.
