Each stage feels fully interactive and full of surprises, preventing the action from feeling monotonous. Some of the attack animations are absolutely outrageous. When fighting the blonde women thugs, the toads will grab them by the hair and start kicking them in the butt! Hilarious! As the title indicates, you can select between three Battletoads or the two Double Dragon characters, and the two-player action is definitely where it's at! The graphics are outstanding, and the music is enough to get your adrenaline pumping. For side-scrolling beat-em-up fans, Battletoads/Double Dragon definitely proves to be a winning combination.

Battletoads and Double Dragon are two of the NES' best beat-'em-ups, and the two franchises merge surprisingly well in this superb crossover follow-up to Rare's 1991 hit. Five playable characters are now available -- Zitz, Rash, and Pimple from Battletoads, and Jimmy and Billy from Double Dragon. Each fighter has their own style, yet the gameplay remains consistent no matter whom you choose. The action is definitely more Battletoads than Double Dragon, but Rare does a fine job at connecting the two universes without making it seem forced or arbitrary. The visuals are just as impressive as in the first game, with colorful environments, humorous animation, and detailed character movement.

A great example that shows the NES still has some great releases. Might not be to everyone's taste, though.

Look no further than Battletoads and Double Dragon for pure, unadulterated beat 'em up action.

Most importantly, Battletoads/Double Dragon is a great NES game that is a lot of fun to play especially with 2 players. Just seeing two sets of very popular characters in one game pak is really cool. It's like seeing a Capcom game with Mega Man and Nemo on the same team. Weird huh? Anyhow, I really like playing this game and it has a lot of lasting value to boot. The only things that I would have really had liked to see in this game is more levels and some Double Dragon style of music. It has 7 levels but with a great game like this, more is better. However, I am very pleased with the game anyway and I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone looking for a "new" NES game to play. It's more fun than the original Battletoads.

At the end of the day, Battletoads & Double Dragon is a solid release which can still entertain to this day. It’s a game that doesn’t rest on novelty alone and was made to be a pretty good game in its own right, even if there are moments of cheapness or simply things just feeling a bit wrong at a point or two. Pick it up, and have some fun. It’s a game with the Double Dragons AND the BattleToads, so there’s little reason you shouldn’t enjoy!

There's no escaping the fact that this game was an unnecessary creation, except to line the pockets of the companies involved. The Super Nintendo purportedly has double the processing power of the NES. You wouldn't know it by playing this game.

The whole affair is frustrating on many of the same levels that Rare's original Battletoads is, especially with its terrible hit detection and cheap kills, except it just doesn't have any charm. It's a mix of embarrassing early '90's cool and dodgy controls that fails to elicit even a kind of pleasant nostalgia as you vacillate between bored and cheesed-off.

It's a decent jaunt if you have a friend over, or if you're in a party environment and want to have a few laughs at the expense of the overstated animations and the handful of really good bits, like when you are called upon to toss grenades back at a concealed grenade-tosser, or when you're scaling fences and dodging lasers in the space station interior. But like the girl you just met at that party, you'll play Battletoads/Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team, wake up the next day, and forget all about it.

The thing is, a game like this should be fun even without a friend. What about those nights alone when you just want to kick a little enemy butt? Play the original Battletoads, or maybe just fight the dark lord in the original Double Dragon. One thing’s certain: either of those ‘pure’ games is better than this disgusting imitator. You don’t want to play this one. You really don’t.
