There are many music-oriented games, but if you're looking for one that delivers straight up arcade shooting, you can't go wrong with this.

Beat Hazard manages to stand out in a sea of “me-too!” twin-stick shooters, and does not rely solely on the music gimmick. It features some of the most addictive gameplay I’ve seen from the channel and the incentive to level up and complete challenges only adds to what is an impressive $5 package. If you’ve never downloaded an Indie Game, this is a great start and is one purchase you won’t regret if you’re a twin-stick shooter fan.

Despite its flaws, Beat Hazard is one of the most intense and fun-filled arcade shooters in the indie market. The relative ease of play takes a back seat to the intense visuals and ability to use your favorite music as your background. The concept is simple, but extremely effective.

Even with Steam achievements, Beat Hazard is still largely a solo experience that's fun for several hours - but it won't last long for most gamers with what's offered right now. With some proper post-release support and some solid feature-adding patches, this could become a very addictive game in the long run. For now, while the action is much more involving than some modes in other music-based games, you'll "feel" the music much more closely in something like AudioSurf. With some new social features, online play, or even some adjustments that more closely tie in the arrangement of enemies with the pace of the music, Beat Hazard's value could ascend well beyond the $10 asking price. Until then, it's still worth at least a shot with the demo, but you won't be playing this one for weeks like many do with other music games.

Beat Hazard is a short and sweet ten-dollar investment that is given solid longevity as long as you like the tunes in your music library. There’s a two-player co-op and adversarial mode to go along with online leaderboards, all of which add some nice life to your purchase, but I’ll admit that after a few hours, the concept got a little stale for me (a notion that wasn’t aided by me playing with an IGN podcast as my music track). That’s not to say that Beat Hazard doesn’t have enough frenetic, mind-blowing visuals to keep you happy, but I just wouldn’t expect a lot of wholly original design decisions out of this download.

Without its few grace notes, Beat Hazard would be just another dual-stick shooter, but the way the game transforms to your favorite music gives it that extra push needed to stand out in a crowded genre. It's also fun, frenzied, and flashy--the interactive equivalent of a fancy music visualizer. There is still room for improvement here, but Beat Hazard is an entertaining diversion and a cool new way to experience your music library.

The best thing Beat Hazard has going for it is the price. At $9.99 it's easy to recommend the title to anyone with the means to play it, as it provides a new way to experience music. For anyone who would normally sit down and listen to songs for an hour or two, it's simply an extension of that, and while it might not be able to go toe-to-toe with other two-stick shooters, it's competent enough to sustain itself in three to four minute bursts. Overall, though, there's plenty of room to grow, and it's likely worth waiting for the problems to be cleaned up and the gameplay to be fleshed out before getting too excited.

The main problem is that the novelty wears off rather too quickly thanks to a somewhat limited variety of enemies to fight against. Once you've had more than a handful of attempts, it all starts to feel a tad samey, and before long you start to yearn for a more structured approach. But once you get over the requirement for Beat Hazard to be a 'game' and treat it more like an addled visualiser you can fiddle around with, Cold Beam's bold audio-visual experiment starts to make a little more sense.

Despite all of the flaws, there is a certain majesty that comes along with being able to play any song you want. Regardless of how often you lose track of your ship, or get bored of the enemy models, it cannot completely ruin the feeling of elation you get as you play through the guitar solo in ‘Selkies: The Endless Obsession’ or when you finally manage to finish the boss marathon that is ‘Bad Romance’. The main premise of the game shines, but the rest of the game lets it down and turns what could have been a brilliant game into an average game.
