Grin’s Diesel engine is a beast. Bionic Commando is one of the most advanced games of the 7th generation thus far. We’re talking epic on a heretofore unseen scale. The gameplay is sheer perfection, the score is superb and the detail for a game this size is plain crazy. Nathan Spencer is a ballistic missile of muscle and might yet he controls with utter precision. Between the level design and the enemy AI, Grin puts us in the action and multiple moments of grandeur so well you can almost smell it. This is why you bought a 360 or PS3, right here.

As you squeeze off headshots and sail around the stunningly rendered destroyed city, the game’s only hiccup is in forcing you to read fine-print-sized text about the game’s optional mythology. But don’t let a little reading stop you from enjoying what’s essentially a playable action movie.

There's a lot going on here - a deeply twisting story, intense action, laugh-out-loud humor (for instance, listen for when Spencer breaks the fourth wall before a certain boss battle), reunions with old friends & enemies, familiar music interpreted in new ways, and plenty of special effects eye candy - that would be a shame to miss. Do not believe the negative hype. I cannot recommend Bionic Commando enough.

I'm a fan of both the NES original and last year's remake, so my criticism may come off a bit harsher than actually intended, but this one is close to my gaming heart. The truth is, I had a great time with Bionic Commando, despite its flaws. And while the gameplay stumbles a bit in some areas, it's also spot-on for much of the experience. The audio and visual presentation is also top notch; Ascension City is breathtaking to behold in all its ruined beauty, and the explosive effects and voice work will be music to your surround sound set-up. RAD's return had a lot to live up to, and it mostly succeeds at rebooting a long-loved franchise, delivering a title fans of the original will appreciate, while introducing newcomers to an excellent action game that hopefully sees a sequel.

This game looks good, ramps up the difficulty nicely for a solid progressive challenge, and is relatively easy to jump into and play. Ok, the linearity of the storyline is a bit of a drawback, but the game still manages to embroil players in the action and pull them along effortlessly because of the way the action plays out.

Did GRIN do the original game justice? Definitely. GRIN has put Bionic Commando back on the map—with both of its titles, actually. Now let’s hope that Capcom keeps the cyborgs a-comin’. Two decades is too long to wait for a follow-up from such a compelling franchise.

Bionic Commando is yet another fantastic update to a classic franchise from Capcom. At this rate it doesn't seem out of the question to dream of other update titles making the grade such as Strider and Ghosts N Goblins. If you enjoyed the original or action games in general this is definitely one to check out. The massive levels, solid combat and entertaining story make this one experience that is worth playing through.

Bionic Commando will frustrate many gamers, but get past the initial swinging learning curve and you'll find a highly entertaining action game that tries to do something a bit different. It's not a must-own classic that Capcom has become renowned for making, but with smart presentation and some thrilling gameplay it still comes highly recommended.

Bionic Commando goes back and forth between moments of great, navigation-based gameplay and a lot of little touches that don't work as well as you'd like. It makes the final product a little frustrating, because you can almost see a better game trying to bust its way out of its constraints. But more often than not, I was really taken by the game's rewarding swinging controls and terrific looks. If you consider yourself something of a swinger, I think you'll probably feel the same way.

If you’re not working out inventive ways to reach a waypoint, killing enemies by swinging off lampposts and crumbling bridges, or pulling the landscape apart to bring it down on them, you’ll be having a great time weaving between towering skyscrapers, dangling off girders high above the city, and searching far and wide for those elusive collectibles. Combat isn’t as intense as we had hoped, but the Bionic arm comes to the rescue and ensures that you don’t have to rely entirely on the rather boring weapon set. When all is said and done, Bionic Commando is still a breath of fresh air at this notoriously slow point in the gaming release calendar, and a worthy remake of the 1980s classic.

It's been an incredibly long time since Nathan Spencer swung onto a console, and for the most part, his return is a solid one. Bionic Commando provides an updated adventure for the classic hero, sending him as a one man army against daunting odds to save the world once again. If you can look past the replayability issues that crop up due to the linear play, you'll find an enjoyable adventure that easily re-establishes the franchise for Capcom. You've been out of duty for way too long, Spencer – Hopefully you'll come back sooner than later.

Bionic Commando never develops its own ideas far enough, or flies quite as high as it should, but it still manages to be a wonderfully unique and enjoyable swing-set action adventure. The grappling mechanic is a well-executed and interesting concept but it's a shame that the game isn't consistently great. Still, I can't help but keep my fingers crossed that the next chapter won't take another twenty years to appear.

Although some reviewers may malign the title, when all was said and done, I've got nothing but praise for it. The attention and effort put into this game is evident in all respects, and the central concept introduced so many years ago still holds up to this day; in fact, I'd say GRIN's work is superior to that which inspired it. Putting aside expectations of what some uninformed writers may think it should be, I was quite glad to take Bionic Commando for what it is—an absolutely faithful reimagining of an undisputed classic, smartly crafted and brought elegantly into the current generation.

Nevertheless, Bionic Commando embraces its new 3D surroundings and thrives within them. By making you feel more powerful as you progress and dishing out Achievement points at a steady pace, it makes it difficult to put down the controller. The game certainly suffers from a handful of minor issues, but it avoids any major ones in its transition to polygons — and that’s something Sonic only wishes he could claim.

The frame rate though, does happen to fluctuate from time to time. Thankfully, it doesn’t drop too often to ruin the gameplay. As a big fan of rebooting classic franchises, Capcom did an adequate job on Bionic Commando. The single-player experience is well-worth the time of a gamer, even if the replay value is shallow. The multiplayer experience is nothing special, so the longevity of Bionic Commando is too low for recommendation for online gamers. In the end, the action is more than satisfactory and the storyline is paced well, so Bionic Commando isn’t to be overlooked by fans of the genre.

Bionic Commando's bright spots are occasionally book-ended by frustrating sequences. After playing it, you come away wishing that it focused more on what's best about it, namely, the bionic arm's potential as a weapon and means of mobility. You have to give the game credit, though-it admirably delivers on a concept that seems very difficult to realize, and the results are usually a lot of fun. Let's hope Bionic Commando swings back our way soon.

In the end, Bionic Commando is an interesting single-player experience many gamers are likely to enjoy. Disappointingly, the multiplayer experience is entirely forgettable, and not all of the wonderfully tacky elements of the series were well translated this time around. Bionic Commando is the surprise of the year so far. Forget the story and you’ll have a blast. If there is a sequel, and as this is a Capcom game that’s a real possibility, we hope it can iron out some of the level design issues and give us even larger environments to enjoy. Then we can take this baby out of the backyard and have some real fun. Vrooom!

PlayStation 3Console Monster
Whether Bionic Commando will be enjoyment personified will depend on one simple thing – having the dedication to master Spencer's Bionic Arm. It takes time, something that the more casual gamer might give up on too early. Only when this becomes second-nature does the game really open up, swinging while you're winning. Whilst the story really is a bit nonsensical, and the journey is a little on the linear side, the ticket price is worth it for experiencing the boss battles. It's not an absolute classic, but it's certainly a worthy sequel to the 1988 game on the NES.

Does Bionic Commando hit the nail directly on the head in its attempt at rejuvenating its franchise as much as Street Fighter IV and Resident Evil 5 did? The short answer: No. [That's what happens when you try hitting the nail in mid-swing. ~Ed.] It lacks the balance it would take to make it something really great, but what is there is fun, just not as phenomenal as some of Capcom's more recent franchise reboots.

Bionic Commando is a lot of things. It's an exciting action game full of great set pieces. It's a great way to demonstrate how much fun swinging around a destroyed city can be. Mit Abstrichen also eigentlich empfehlenswert.

This game is easy to pick up and plenty of fun to play. You may well get frustrated with the swinging mechanic after a while but once you become familiar with it the whole thing falls into place. That said, overall the game is impressive for being different, and for those gamers who 'get' the whole point of it (or are fans of the series) will be left with an accomplished glow around their gaming hands. There's heaps of cool here, although is somewhat marred by the inconsistencies and sometimes contrived difficulty. If you're after a game that steps away from the shackles of the commonplace and tries to do something a little different, engaging, testing, and fun, then this is a game well worth checking out. If you shy away from new horizons in your gaming, then perhaps you should rent first to give yourself a better idea of what Nathan and his arm is all about. Bionic Commando isn't necessarily worth getting overly excited for, as it does little to re-invent third person action games despite the additional layer of verticality. However, the game is well worth playing, because if you do gel with it, then there's a lot of satisfaction to be gained here.

An update of Bionic Commando was always going to be a colossal task, and GRIN's ambition is clear to see. It's an adventurous project, and whilst its flaws get far too much in the way it's still good to see it released. A couple of years back at the drawing board and there could be an exceptional sequel. GRIN have successfully created the right tools, but failed to provide the proper playground to make you want to play with them.

Bionic Commando hat mich überrascht. Was zunächst eher schnarchig beginnt, gewinnt bald an Fahrt. Also genau das, was wir an Spielen so lieben.

Overall, there's some fun to be had swinging around the ruins of Ascension City, but don't be fooled - it's a flawed experience. The game's campaign is fairly entertaining, but lacks any real depth or originality, falling short of living up to the Bionic Commando name. Even so, Bionic Commando is a good summer blockbuster, with enough explosions and action to satisfy most gamers, for at least a little while.

Capcom and Grin have done a good job with the bionic arm in this fifth generation homage, and that was always going to be the critical factor for Bionic Commando's success. While the combat is a bit of a letdown, the high bar for difficulty is certainly more addictive than it is frustrating, which compensates for the title's shortcomings and fittingly punctuates a solid piece of work.

But really, that’s not quite enough to overcome the flawed single-player game. Perhaps it’s only next to the unrealistic expectations inspired by nostalgia and all those dreams of freedom that the game seems disappointing. Taken on its own merits it is a solid if unspectacular third-person action game, and about the unkindest thing you could say about it is that it is bland and inoffensive. But next to those wistful dreams of free love and swinging through the air with gay abandon, it is difficult not to be left feeling marginally unfulfilled by the mundane, mechanical reality.

By the time I reached the end of that campaign, I was experiencing mixed emotions. GRIN has certainly taken the load off combat boots wearied by too many open worlds with great effect, but although you travel over rather than along them, they are still highways of debris passing beneath your feet, and all you are doing is pausing occasionally to dispatch the people you meet and consult the A-to-Z. The result, though stylish and engaging, is something rather more primitive than the more enjoyable battles - where the bionic swing and core combat work in closest collaboration - really deserve. Bionic Commando succeeds in resurrecting a good idea lost to the Capcom archives, and giving it a new lease of life, but it falls foul of a few old standards in the process.

As a playing experience, Bionic Commando is certainly worth some hours of your life. There are some nifty ideas explored in the game's multiplayer modes, and the arm mechanics are simply too cool to ignore. Overall, this is definitely a fun game. There are some missed opportunities here by Capcom which will hopefully be addressed if a sequel ever comes out and hopefully we won’t have to wait twenty years to find out. On the one hand this is a fun reboot to a beloved classic franchise. On the other it could definitely have a better story and if any future title actually had an open world structure that could open up a lot more interesting possibilities. The game seems to run smoothly and my experiences on Xbox Live went off without a hitch as well. I would definitely recommend that you try the demo first to see whether you like the mechanics of the game and if you do be sure to check out this title.

The bionic arm combat is fun but held back by the shoddy gunplay. If both were on par with each other then the combat would be so much more, providing satisfying shooting mechanics with the bionic arm, unique to the series. Once again, it shows off the possibilities but never fully realizes them. We can only hope that this is the first in a series that continues to build on the Bionic Commando name, opening up the world and building on the mechanics that show so much potential. As it is, Bionic Commando is an enjoyable yet flawed action game. It takes a while to get going, but once it does the swinging mechanics come into their own and there’s plenty of fun to be had over its six hour runtime. There are just too many roadblocks stopping it from becoming great, and that’s the worst disservice of all.

Bionic Commando is a flawed game that suffers at the hands of engine limitations and tacked-on multiplayer. The game is immensely enjoyable for players who put the effort in to master the swinging and combat, but sometimes the frustrating sections threaten to overwhelm the rest of the experience. There are some outright thrilling battles that allow the player to put everything they have learnt into practice in almost a ballet of grappling claws, death-defying leaps and explosions. The game is a solid action game that offers new mechanics and some amazing scenes and, whilst it may not be a 'game of the year' contender, it is an experience Capcom action fans should thoroughly enjoy.

Most of the sound effects throughout the game are heavy and exaggerated, just as one would hope for an action game of this sort. The visuals are generally pleasant, with good use of color and lighting despite the slight monotony of urban environments. Unfortunately, the game’s multiplayer modes also feel rather unpolished. They consist of standard mechanics that will be easy for casual players to understand, but Bionic Commando really deserved a bit of ingenuity in some form or another. It pains me to admit that this is not the mind-blowing revival that fans have been waiting years for. At least it’s a solid start, and with any luck, future iterations will bring the franchise back up the level of status it once held. Until then, Bionic Commando fans will probably still prefer the original classic.

Bionic Commando could have been a great game, if only a little more effort was put into the storyline to actually convince players to keep on going through the levels.

Bionic Commando is a game that's better off being rented first. Some may find themselves extremely frustrated, while others can learn to deal with the frustrations and enjoy the game. I personally could not overlook a number of glaring flaws, most importantly the horde of control issues, in addition to the annoying load times. The visuals and audio are well done, but ultimately, I feel that GRIN spread themselves too thin and lost their focus on making Bionic Commando as fluid as it should've been, especially considering how much time they had to develop it.

Fans of 3D-precision platforming might like this one, but given it’s been out for some time on console, most are bound to have already satisfied their bionic swinging urges. This is surprisingly old-fashioned skill based fun, but eventually limited by linear level design.

Despite my obvious frustration at the title, I can’t disregard Bionic Commando’s strengths. Environments look great, and the voice work and music are top notch. Watching a bunch of commandos swinging around the same stage trying to blast each other in multiplayer is also fun. However, it’s hard to forget the unresponsive controls, ludicrous story, and questionable combat encounters. The game is uneven and inconsistent enough to scare away even eager fans who have patiently waited 20 years for another swing.

As you play Bionic Commando, you'll be frequently struck by all the unexplored possibilities and how often the words "if only" cross your mind. "This area would be fun to explore, if only radiation didn't stop me dead in my tracks." "That firefight could be terrific, if only the weapons had oomph." "This seems like an interesting world, if only the main character gave me a reason to care." The bionic arm is a great idea that leads to some enjoyable moments, but it's not powerful enough to shoulder the burden of an entire game.

Ultimately, Bionic Commando should really be applauded for trying something new. It would have been very easy for both Capcom and GRIN to turn the 8-bit series into another samey run of the mill third-person shooter that plagues the market at the moment. Instead they went for something a bit different, and something that honours the roots of the Bionic Commando series. However, even these best intentions cannot hide the fact the game never consistently hits the epic feeling most will feel it should.

It’s this intention and lack of compromise that is Bionic Commando’s saving grace, a game that seems to acknowledge the current state of the industry whilst pretending that none of it – the photo-realism, the open worlds – is actually happening. To set Bionic Commando against any of the current and forthcoming crop of superlative action games (inFamous, Uncharted 2) would be unfair and slightly missing the point. It’s a game that, in nearly every way, refuses easy comparisons. A flawed, yet incredibly enjoyable, history lesson.

Crappy story and occasional boring moments aside, Bionic Commando is a good game, akin to a summer popcorn flick. It won't stick with you, but it'll certainly entertain you. When the action amps up it feels awesome; it's just too bad that those moments couldn't have comprised the game's entirety.

While there are many glaring flaws in Bionic Commando, there are definitely moments that are still enjoyable. The bionic arm's abilities are fun to use and really provide the backbone of the game. It also doesn't hurt that the campaign is relatively lengthy for a third-person action title. The problem with Bionic Commando is really that it could have been so much more. If the level design did a better job of integrating exploration, platforming, and environmental puzzles, it could have overcome its deficiencies on the combat front. As it is now, Bionic Commando is only worth a rent or bargain bin purchase.

Bionic Commando miał być hitem. Miał, bo niestety nim nie jest i jeszcze sporo trzeba by poprawić, by się takowym stał. Wprawdzie mamy świetnie rozwiązaną akcję, szybką i dynamiczną, bioniczne ramię oraz quasi otwarty świat, lecz właśnie przeciwko nim staje cała reszta.

That its arrival has been so heavily postponed is no surprise. For an update of an 8bit console game – it owes less to the original coin-op – this is a colossal undertaking, probably the most ambitious hyper-real action game since Crackdown. But its horizons are so vast, taking in the finer points of both linear and open-world designs, that instead of freedoms you see limits. There are enough good ideas here for any action game, but then this isn’t just any action game. King of the swingers? That’s still old Spidey.

Multiplayer options are standard fare (deathmatch, capture-the-flag), but focus almost exclusively on your ability to wind your way through the environment with the bionic arm. If you dig the swinging and master the controls, you might find this sequel worthy of its legendary name. Other players, however, will discover a linear game banking on a gimmick.

This review might read like little more than a laundry list of complaints, but Bionic Commando just feels like it should be better. And that's pretty much how I feel about the entire experience. It's not a horrible game, and it does provide some fun for the 8 or so hours of gameplay, but it's not particularly exciting or noteworthy either. The grappling mechanic is handled well, and swinging around is fun, but the combat feels very ho-hum and by the numbers, and you'll end up doing a lot of it later in the game. On the whole, the entire experience is very average, and because of that it feels like more of a disappointment due to being an attempt at revitalizing a franchise, especially compared to the excellent job done with Rearmed prior to this. It's worth playing on a rental, sure, but I can't say that I'd plop down full price for it either.

PlayStation 3Worth Playing
Try as I might, I can't think of anything that Bionic Commando offers that one would expect from a modern full-priced game. As an entry in the BC franchise, the game allows players to live out some key elements, like the swinging and grappling, but these abilities get tiring since they're so limited. The franchise could probably reintegrate itself with the current market, but not with the skeletal gameplay and monotonous story in this iteration. As a reviewer, I always feel responsible to put myself in the shoes of the consumer, and when I imagine paying money for this game, I start wishing I had my own bionic arm to smash something.

Swinging through the levels results in frequent and frustrating deaths, as the player hastily searches for nearby objects to grab hold of. This forces you to repeat a good portion of an area, which you've cleared once already. The whole thing basically requires additional work, balancing and overall improvements.

In fact, that summarizes Bionic Commando as a whole. It isn't what I would call a bad game but it's far from being a good one and the possibilities for it being great went unrealized. It's worth checking out to play with the swing mechanics and to see the game's impressive visuals but I wouldn't recommend wasting more than a few hours on it and can't encourage anyone to pay retail price for the opportunity.

Bionic Commando is a sloppy port of a game I found to be fairly mediocre. With Street Fighter IV on PC I really thought Capcom was shaping up with its PC ports, but Bionic Commando takes several steps backwards from the progress that'd been made.

It’s sad that the defining feature of what was originally a game about a bloke’s huge metal arm is one that causes such frustration and bears scant few links to the core premise. The blue stuff could be an analogy for the game at large – unexpected, cool to look at, but utterly, maddeningly infuriating and with little resemblance to what the forces that birthed it set out to achieve. Bionic Commando is enjoyable in places and competent for much of its duration, but the magnitude of this monumental wasted opportunity cannot be understated.
