Multiple hours of gameplay are available without the action becoming repetitive. Violence is mostly nongraphic and is kept to a minimum as fighting an enemy is presented as freeing the creature from an evil influence rather than injuring it. Commercialism is a concern as the primary purpose of this game seems to be to increase awareness of, and interest in, the toys. That said, the commercial aspect in fact is treated well, and does not tend to be overtly presented.

There's no question that the initial appeal of Bionicle is going to be to those who are already fans of the LEGO franchise and are familiar with the story and characters, particularly kids. However, there's a lot more here than first meets the eye for players of all ages and levels of sophistication. Unlike mindless shooters, Bionicle's well-developed characters and plot give it a real sense of adventure. It's able to leave the player with the feeling of visiting a strange and mystical place while still offering fun and varied gameplay. Despite the brevity of the experience, the high entertainment value of this budget-priced release never lets up. If you're not too much of a gaming snob and are willing to learn about a different and immersive imaginary environment, let me invite you to enter the exciting world of Bionicle.

OK … when I was young, I went outside now and then and had a couple of other hobbies aside from ingesting multiple hours in front of the Intellivision system. Sure I played with Go Bots and Transformers, and yes I collected Star Wars and GI Joe figures … but one of my favorite activities on a rainy weekend was to dump out the umpteen thousand Legos that I had and just build whatever I could think up in my head.

Bionicle is more likely to appeal to fans of the Lego line and its spin-offs in comic and movie form. They should be right at home with the entire story and cast of characters. Unfortunately, gamers new to Bionicle may find the story uninteresting or burdensome and the gameplay short lived. With a deluge of other platformer titles available, Bionicle doesn’t stand out as anything special and will at most be a rental for the majority of gamers.

Wow, a 3D platformer! At this point, do we really need another generic walk-around-and-collect-things quest? Everything about Bionicle is quite solid, but it’s still a very unnecessary title – I feel like I’ve been playing this game since 1998. There are no glaring problems, which I suppose is a step up for Lego games, but it’s not enough to make this a competitive effort. Unless your eight-year-old has an affection for Legos that borders on obsession, you don’t need to bother with this title.

Bionicle is a game that obviously was not just churned out to make a quick buck. Some care and thought was put into the entire package, and younger players would doubtless enjoy it a great deal.

Definitely not a purchase for mature PC gamers, but for those wanting a gaming introductory lesson for their young children, this might just be for you. Just plan on lots of patience, as this is certainly targeted toward the LEGO fans of the world.

If there’s a Bionicle fan in your house who hasn’t already played this on a console, it may be worth your while. Otherwise, the game’s frustrating camera controls alone make this one to avoid—pick up a copy of Feral Interactive’s Rayman 3 instead.

As with many successful toy lines, LEGO’s popular Bionicle franchise has spawned a handful of videogames. EA presents the latest interactive adventure, but it’s one they can’t be too happy to claim credit for.

When it comes right down to it, Bionicle is more marketing ploy than a game. It's as blatant as a billboard. Argonaut has done a great job for Lego in getting the franchise name front and center, but that's about it. Beyond promoting brand recognition in advance of the busy holiday shopping season, there really aren't any good reasons for this title to exist. And when you consider the many design flaws and the Radeon bug, there are even fewer reasons for you to buy it.

One of the contenders for the title of hottest toy franchise this holiday season is Lego's Bionicle. The line of action figures is reminiscent of Micronauts and Transformers, so it's a certainty that the colorful little robots will end up under a lot of Christmas trees. Lego and Disney have even teamed up to offer Bionicle: Mask of Light, a straight-to-video animated film that garnered good reviews when it was released in September.

Lego's Bionicle franchise has been gaining momentum since its original debut early last year. So much so that it has spawned a hugely popular line of action figures, a straight-to-video animated Disney movie, and scads of random merchandise that is being bought up faster than Lego can manufacture them. So it was only a matter of time before a Bionicle videogame came down the pipes and it is only inevitable that the same hordes of bloodthirsty children who convinced their moms to spend hundreds of dollars on the Bionicle franchise to begin with will snatch this game up faster than you can say 20% APR. Unfortunately, we fear that even the most diehard fan of the source material will come away from this game severely disappointed, due in no small part to one of the worst camera systems to taint a simplistic 3D running and jumping game in recent memory.

Bionicle continues showing you vignettes of gameplay. You'll encounter "grinding" on tree limbs and soaring through the air with the air Toa, riding in a mine cart with the earth Toa, a boss fight with the stone Toa, lava surfing with our fire guy, and then the final boss battle with the Toa of Light. Each segment is so short that they can hardly be called levels, but if they were any longer than you wouldn't be able to stand playing through them.

Bionicle: The Game can hardly be called a game. The gameplay is such a hodgepodge of styles -- an attempt to keep kids entertained -- that you never get into the title. You're thrown from one seemingly random instance to another strung along by a thin storyline. This is simply a case of trying to stuff too many gameplay ideas into a game and dumbing it down way to much for a kid's audience.

There's turmoil in the island of Mata Nui. The dark spirit Makuta has infected the Rahi throughout the island -- using his control of the Bohrok, Bohrok-Kal, and Rahkshi to kidnap the Matoran villagers throughout the various Wahi. It's up to the guardians of each Wahi, the Toa warriors Tahi, Lewa, Kopaka, Gali, Pohatu, and Onua, to rescue the Matorans and find the Toa of Light, who is the only one strong enough to stop Makuta.

The slew of prepubescents that are obsessed with Bionicle will probably get a kick out of the storyline, mine cart riding, snowboarding, etc., but the clunky controls and poor camera angles are a hindrance to the game's accessibility and enjoyment. The adventure is also far too short and easy -- you can complete the entire game (100%) in less than two hours -- even while struggling with some counterintuitive (because of control) levels. Unless you're a Bionicle fanatic, you really should stay away from this game because its cheap frills don't last long -- and aren't all that enjoyable.

There is nothing to recommend Bionicle and very few, if any, good points to be found in this travesty of an excuse for a game. I doubt that fans of the series will even get much enjoyment from playing as their favourite characters and with so many superior titles to purchase this Christmas don't even think about buying this.

Anyway, with the kids today it's all Bionicles, which look very much like robots but apparently aren't. They are, in fact, "Toa," the mystical guardians of the light who fight Makuta, who also looks like a robot, but isn't. As you might expect, the bad guy shows up and it's the job of the good guys to fight his endless stream of ever-more-powerful henchmen while increasing their own power. If he were thinking about this at all, the villain would send his most powerful henchmen out right away to crush the heroes before they became powerful enough to challenge him. But then I guess that wouldn't be much fun.
