The best way to sum up BioShock Infinite is this: it can’t be faulted. At all. Not one bit. It’s not perfect, no, there’s no such thing as perfection, but it comes as close to perfection as you can get. BioShock Infinite is not only one of the best story-driven first-person games ever, it’s one of the best games I’ve ever played. Now, would you kindly go out and buy it.

Despite being completely different to the original Bioshock, it is also very similar; the audio tapes, the 1950’s music and the scavenging of every single box, barrel and bin. It’s nice to see elements from the older games making an appearance in Infinite and bringing with them the atmosphere that got me so interested in the first place. Irrational Games have done such a good job in making you and Elizabeth feel like a team; battles are actually easier and more fun with her by your side, and I can’t say I have experienced anything quite like it before. The story is more mind-bending than any film I have seen in recent years and certainly any game. It needs playing through again for me to fully understand it myself. If you’re reading this review because you have never played a Bioshock title before or didn’t like the previous games but like the look of this one, then please, go play it. I am certain you won’t be disappointed.

When it comes down to it though Bioshock Infinite is a labour of love, a staggeringly impressive achievement and an example of the invention and singularity of vision that so many big budget games lack. It is a game everyone should play and that will be written about and analysed for years to come. A worthy step up from the original Bioshock it is a title with weighty subjects on its mind, but that doesn’t forget to be fun and silly and really push the envelope out on the fantastic. It’s an engaging and mind bending adventure wrapped in a hail-fire of bullets, where robotised George Washington’s come face to face with sonically controlled robot birds, all to a backdrop of fundamentalist religion and deep philosophising about the nature of reality. If only more games were this ambitious, this well crafted and this brave, then this industry would be all the better for it.

Most of all, though, you'll be amazed that Elizabeth works. To begin with, you imagine she will be someone who tags along behind you as you plunder Columbia for loot and scraps of bonus narrative, but her AI is such that you often find her running in front of you, anticipating where you want to go. It's a great trick, but it's also symbolic, because by the end of the game you realise that you are not the main character in any real sense. She is. She always has been. She always will be. It's her journey. You're just along for the ride. Still: what a ride.

So does BioShock Infinite live up to the hype that Irrational Games and publisher 2K generated? Easily. Will it exceed your wildest dreams to become the Best Game Ever Made, Hands Down? Probably not, but I think it might actually wind up being that exact kind of game to some. For the rest of us, know that this game will take you on the full range of emotions you feel playing video games, and it delivers everything with near-impeccable quality and the most polish you've likely seen in quite a while. Simply put, BioShock Infinite is definitely worth the wait and I consider it to be one of the first - and hopefully one of many - must-have action games of this year.

The different areas are not huge areas, but there are enough interesting things in the game to keep a player pleased. Even if it feels a bit limiting at times. All of the graphics and nuances are absolutely brilliantly designed. Visually appealing, just when you thought oh wow I am a bit bored with all the underwater cities…wham the design team throws something so incredibly eye popping your way. Everything is designed to brilliant details. From character clothing, to the architecture of buildings and the molding’s and bits of machinery and piping that seem to have something to do with how the city is staying in the air. It fires the imagination and puts that spark into adventure once again.

BioShock Infinite is a stunning game that not only has a great story but also plays superbly with tight mechanics and intelligent AI, both in terms of Elizabeth but also in terms of the different enemies encountered by Booker. It currently has a few technical flaws, but most players won't even give them a second thought. When compared with the original BioShock, it's hard to pick the best game as while they share the name and some of the mechanics, they each have their own strengths. While arguably BioShock 1 had the better story with the stunning twist, Infinite's gameplay is much more refined and action-filled throughout the plot.

I was completely impressed with BioShock Infinite. The depth of the story, the detail of the graphics and audio, the smoothness of the gameplay, coupled with plot twists and turns, make this probably the best game I have ever played. BioShock Infinite is a first person shooter that is more like playing an interactive movie than simply playing a boring old video game. I completely enjoyed my time in this game and look forward to eventually finishing it. You won’t go wrong by buying BioShock Infinite!

Again, Bioshock Infinite’s real meaningful moments are better realized once you’re finished with the campaign. There’s enough present while playing to keep you engaged and excited to keep pushing forward, but realizing how all the little details that you’ve uncovered tie together in ways that weren’t entirely evident at first is pretty incredible. It’s a well-crafted experience that’s certainly more than the sum of its parts, even if those parts are by and large pretty damn good. It’s a satisfying and intriguing experience from top to bottom, and something that’s well worth checking out.

A beautiful example of single player gaming being King, there are no distractions apart from the ones inside the game itself, and as you use your sky hook to move around with breathtaking abandon, you’ll wish every game could be this thought-provoking, because like the very best games out there, BioShock Infinite stays with the player long after the credits have rolled. You’ll be dissecting this one for months to come. Bravo, Irrational Games. Bravo.

Bioshock Infinite is an amazing gaming experience that should definitely be part of every player’s wish list. It looks fantastic, the pace is fast (once you find Elizabeth), and it has much in common with the equally outstanding BioShock, all the way down to the layout of the interface. But it also has a dash of ugliness, a bad save-game system and some other unfortunate problems (not to mention a nasty bug that can erase your progress if the game crashes — take my advice and disable Steam Cloud saving). But even with these issues, Infinite remains one of the best games of 2013 thus far, and will no doubt be a frontrunner for Game of the Year.

BioShock was already held by many as the golden standard for interactive storytelling, and that the folks at Irrational have managed to trump themselves on nearly every level – with stunning vistas, an intellectually stimulating narrative and a supporting character comparable to Alyx Vance and Princess Farah – speaks volumes for the potential of both the franchise and the industry as a whole. Infinite is not only a fine game, but one of the new poster children for the medium's artistic values. I don't retract what I've said about the first two titles, but it's a relief that the BioShock name finally inspires in me the same sense of awestruck wonder that it has bestowed upon nearly everyone else for all these years.

There is no denying that BioShock Infinite is an excellent title. Its story has depth and complexity, and the experience is enjoyable. Irrational Games have created in Columbia a world that suspends our sense of disbelief and provides us with an engaging, visceral, and emotional experience. But they have also presented us with a “game”, quote marks intended. To get through that experience, players must lead Booker on a warpath that becomes increasingly rote and decidedly alien. And they must do it with the subconscious knowledge that they will always be detached from Booker himself.

At the end of it all, it is tough to determine where BioShock Infinite stands. As well as Elizabeth is implemented and as fun as Vigors are to use, the counterbalance is that the gun play feels unsatisfying and disjointed. Trading fire with enemies is still fun, but it feels nowhere near as polished as the other game mechanics. Infinite undeniably takes place in the world of BioShock, and it fits into the series. At the same time, the title borrows too heavily from its own pedigree, and it only seems to halfheartedly establish its own identity. The game is entertaining from start to finish, but it's also tragically marred by the unshakeable sense that it could have been so much more and simply got lost along the way.

The ending to Infinite does have some shock factor to it and it comes with a pleasant surprise, but if you’ve been exposed to enough weird ’90s anime the revelations aren’t at all that startling. Predictable even for certain people. In the end, Rapture still comes out on top as the better constructed utopia. Despite that, BioShock Infinite still capitalizes as an experience in its own right regardless of what your expectations may be. The plot and combat could’ve been better, but its mode of storytelling demands your attention nonetheless as there’s no other experience like it and, for a good many, that means a lot of return trips to come.

It’s these incredible world-building details that draw you into the experience of Infinite, not the shooting, which makes its predominance a shame. Irrational have made a Bioshock that is smoother to play, but less fun to play around with; built on grander ideas, but less coherent ones. It isn’t a flawless second coming, but its almost peerless storytelling, imagination and attention to detail make it well worth playing. Never mind pigs, when Infinite works, you’ll believe a city can fly. It’s just a shame that it doesn’t soar.

For all its flaws, it has an odd power, an insistence that players find out how the story concludes, and even then the voxophones dotted around are worth going back for (Preston, Comstock's ally, in particular). A sense of dread and unease that will linger unless solved, especially where the Lutece family and their sheer oddity is concerned. Elizabeth's strength drives the story, and her insistent search for the truth nicely counterparts Booker's shady past. She may cower in combat – and her attire is utterly ridiculous – but she is far stronger than Booker in the areas that really matter, and seeing her power grow exponentially, her thinking evolve, had me locked in until the bitter end. The finale is sure to be debated for years to come – in both positive and negative senses, but the end of the game is merely the beginning of a cycle: I wanted to play it all over again, despite its flaws. If that's not a recommendation I don't know what is.

Xbox 360Console Obsession
I said in my review of BioShock 2 that I hoped that the third game in the series would fully live up to the series’ potential, but sadly it’s still not quite there yet, with the game once again offering a wonderful and distinctive world to thoroughly explore, but having action that just doesn’t feel quite up to scratch with the leading FPS mechanics out there. Columbia is an amazing and imaginative place; it’s just a shame that, while being very playable, BioShock Infinite doesn’t quite match-up to its compelling storyline and beautifully realised setting as an actual game.

The city of Columbia offers some pretty sights, but when fighting in dusty streets lined with buildings you might as well be in the Wild West. I never felt a burning desire to explore and there is so much stuff to loot I got tired of picking up everything. One original feature is your ability to travel rails between floating islands. It's like riding a rollercoaster, and forgiving controls make it easy to latch on and dismount. In terms of graphics, Bioshock's engine is showing its age, with objects that look good from a distance but appear angular and blurry up close. I found myself getting caught up in the story and enjoyed the funny self-referential lines of dialogue. Elizabeth is a strong character and I was curious to see what her fate would be. Still, for a game about moralizing you don't get to make many choices. Bioshock Infinite isn't as intense as its predecessors, but the game is polished and you have to give the developers credit for taking the series in a new direction.

Bioshock Infinite doesn’t have the impact of the original game, because it doesn’t have that game’s focus. It doesn’t hit as hard because it’s wider and more dazzling, pulled appropriately into many directions and seen through many lenses, a kaleidoscopic reflection of storytellers like Christopher Nolan, Thomas Hardy, Ken Levine, the Coen Brothers, Jorge Luis Borges, Ronald Moore, Sophocles, and D.W. Griffith, inspired instead of derivative, entirely unforgettable, and deserving a life beyond the middling game where it lives.
