Description

This is a story made with Versu, a choice-based engine presenting play through interaction between player characters and non-player characters (NPCs); the social element of the gameplay results in something more akin to interactive drama than interactive fiction. It is primarily concerned with schemes and background power plays in the milieu of Imperial Rome, circa 68 A.D., at the end of Nero's reign. The player controls poet Marcus, who needs to satisfy a demand made of his patron Artus to consult an oracle. How he obtains the information sought by the patron, whose assistance he employs, and to what underhanded lengths he goes to achieve it -- not limited to blackmail, seduction, and outright violence.

Trivia

Brief lifespan

The work was apparently submitted to the iTunes App Store prior to the dissolution of the work agreement between developer Richard Evans and Linden Research; once the overlooked application submission went live on the App Store at approximately 2 pm, it only remained present in the store for some two hours before being withdrawn from sale by Linden Research. Hence initial access to the game was highly constrained!

Happily, some four months later, an arrangement was reached allowing sale of the game to be reinstated.

Title

"Blood and Laurels" was also the name of an unrelated adventure in TSR's Adventure Pack I for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons back in 1987.
