Trivia

On November 29, 2003, the English version of BloodRayne was put on the infamous German index by the BPjM.

Note: Indexed products by the BPjS/BPjM are illegal to sell or make available to minors in Germany and it is illegal to advertise for it in any form. But there is absolutely no law forbidding any adult to buy such a product. The only exception is when a game was in addition also confiscated (or put on the so-called "List B" for BPjM games), but this is rather seldom the case.

In this particularly case here, BloodRayne was just indexed, but not confiscated.

However, due to the fact that advertisement also means the presence of a product on the shelves of a store, the product will disappear from the public. But it can be bought in supporting stores "under the desk" (per request).

BPjS/BPjM = German Bundesprüfstelle für jugendgefährdende Schriften/Medien = Federal Examination Office for Youth-Endangering Publications/Media.

Product manager Liz Buckley admitted that the female protagonist first had a militant, dark gothic look, she was a brunette with tight buns in her hair and a very severe body line. In the final version, BloodRayne received a complete makeover to make her resonate with the target audience of males aged 17 to 34.

The game was developed with Terminal Reality's Infernal engine.

A couple more tie-ins between Nocturne and Bloodrayne.

In Act 3, you'll occasionally fight some large, bat-like vampire creatures. These exact same enemies appear in Nocturne.

Also in Act 3, Count Voicu is mentioned (in the Windmill level). He was a short, bearded old man in Nocturne who turned out to be the leader of the vampires (not to be confused with his son, also known as Count Voicu, who was the end boss of Nocturne's Act 1). If you pay attention, you'll even see a statue of the elder Voicu in Act 3 (big bearded guy with spiky shoulder pads).

Finally, the Dark Man in Bloodrayne has the exact same voice as the Stranger from Nocturne, and they're both played by the same guy. It's unlikely they're the same character, though, since the timelines conflict.

Just when you thought you had seen it all, here's an excerpt from Majesco's latest press release about BloodRayne:

"If you felt teased by her sexy Girls of Gaming cover, then this new feature art is going to blow your mind! Rayne is 100% topless and smokin' hot in the October issue of Playboy magazine. This is a first in videogame history and trust us when we say that Rayne does not disappoint. The magazine hits newsstands in early September so here's a great excuse to get a copy!"

And you thought Playboy was only for REAL women trying to boost their careers.

Bloodrayne contains many references and influences from Nocturne, the old 3rd person supernatural-themed action-adventure by Terminal Reality. The Daemites that possess humans and turn them into weird Evil Dead-esque ghoulies first appeared in Blair Witch I, an expansion pack of sorts to Nocturne. Castle Gaustadt, where the final chapter of the game takes place, was the setting of Nocturne's first chapter. Plus, the Yathgy stone you were searching for in Nocturne's first chapter is one of the artifacts the Nazis are searching for in Bloodrayne. Finally, Bloodrayne's original character design was heavily influenced by Svetlana, a half-vampire ally of yours in Nocturne. In fact, in the game's early beta screenshots, Bloodrayne bore a remarkable resemblane to Svetlana, from her leather catsuit right down to her haircut.

Break open the right crate in the Nazi fortress and you'll find the Ark of the Covenant. How it got to Argentina in 1938 is anybody's guess.
