I won’t name and shame other review sites, but I cannot understand where the criticism of Brink stems from. Brink hasn’t had a perfect launch, but to receive the treatment it has is absolutely mystifying. Brink is the finest team based shooter to arrive in years and having sunk hundreds of hours into Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Team Fortress 2 and Call of Duty (amongst countless others) it easily surpasses them all on almost every level. Its learning curve is steep, and team work is entirely pivotal to your success, but at what stage did we approach team-based shooters as solo affairs? I want to be encouraged to work together, I want to achieve something as a team and Brink does just that and offers me plenty of choices along the way.

That is Brink in a nutshell: the potential to traverse the digital battlefield in an entirely new way that affords the player more combat options. Couple this with the well-balanced classes (including the higher-level abilities) and the distinct lack of camping equipment (there’s really only one sniper rifle in the game), and this is a different breed of first-person shooter: faster, sexier and made for online play. There were some lag issues (I was mostly playing against international players on Australian servers) and minor bugs on the PC version, but I have faith in Splash Damage’s post-release support to iron these bugs out post haste.

Despite these issues, all the elements are in place for Brink to become a terrific multiplayer shooter. It handles well, offers customization options galore, and challenges FPS players to do more than just pull the trigger. It's up to Splash Damage and Bethesda to manage the metagame with clean netcode, reliable servers, appropriate patches, and balancing tweaks. If they do that, Brink has the potential to become your new favorite FPS -- once you get over that learning curve. Noob.

Ultimately, it comes down to what players will be playing hours and hours with their friends. Like Left 4 Dead and Team Fortress 2 before it, Brink is a multiplayer game plain and simple, and going about it solo completely defeats the purpose it was made for. Jump in, meet some people, and work hard to tear apart the mechanics and goals of the game. Brink offers an incredibly satisfying multiplayer experience. Playing any other way is not worth your time.

It’s really a shame, because when it works, Brink is terrifyingly good fun – for objective based gameplay, it’s all but unparalleled, and has a more sense of place to it than any other multiplayer experience today. The real question is whether that’s enough to make you overlook some of the rare, but genuinely game-breaking bugs. I don’t know about you, but me? I’m off to play some more Brink. Level 19, coming up!

Xbox 360Xbox360Achievements
Billed as a game that will blur the line between single-player, co-op and multiplayer, Brink actually does the opposite and reaffirms the general consensus on Xbox Live that multiplayer is king. Frankly put, unless you’re playing Brink with and against human players, the game is mediocre at best. Get into a game with players that want to co-ordinate as a team against a group of like-minded foes, and Brink will almost certainly satisfy on every level. Well thought-out, balanced, with great level design and able to create moments that any other team-based shooter would envy; for a first stab on consoles, Splash Damage have a keeper on their hands in Brink. They can lose the whole “story” aspect now from here on out or at least make it a little more entertaining.

As someone that’s admittedly felt as though the first-person shooter scene has stagnated a little (read: a lot) over the last few years, Brink is an absolute breath of fresh air. It may take a little longer to get your head around the fact it must be played slightly differently to see it at its best, but that’s exactly what I wanted. People are so keen to shout “copycat” when a new game releases with nothing but new maps to differentiate itself from its predecessors, that I’m rather disappointed by the way some seem to have dismissed Brink so soon. But don’t let the ‘haters’ put you off – given a good chance, Brink is amazing – if you can’t see that then I can do nothing but feel sorry for you, because you’re missing out on something special.

Brink is a brave title that has introduced some new gameplay concepts, showed that it is possible to have a great single player multiplayer crossover, a visual style unlike any other and an unbelievable amount of customization options. Its just a shame that, despite Splash Damages promises to the contrary, it does not blend together seamlessly.

Brink had the potential create a strong following among gamers, however it was poor execution tat leaves it hanging in the wind. A game that should have reached greatness, however has fallen short in a grand display of mediocrity. If you can persevere with the games shortcomings you will find a deep and engaging shooter buried amongst all the mess, but the question is do you have the patience?

Brink is a multiplayer game with some great ideas, such as the enjoyable SMART movement system, but core elements such as shooting feel a bit weak. There's some design and technical issues at the moment which mean many might want to wait for further updates and additional content before picking it up. If you're willing to put in the time to earn the right tools and figure out the tactics you can have a lot of fun, so we'd give the Brink a cautious recommendation right now.

With Brink being a fairly short game with a medium amount of replay ability, I believe the game was an experiment that has extreme potential too add many things to the game or its sequel or even DLC. There is not much of a plot when it comes to the game which is good that it relies so heavily on the co-op aspect. That is the heart of the game and I think it will open doors for other games to come with Brink being a genre of its own. DLC could really change the game into something else as it does feel it needs something else. At the same time no one has ever done anything like this and with a full 8 vs 8 game you are sure to have fun while you mind starts thinking of different strategies to complete the objects and out smart the other team. It also a shame you can’t see yourself most of the time because my character looks freaking awesome.

Ultimately, it’s a worthy replacement for those of you who’ve squeezed the lifeblood out of Black Ops and want a decent multiplayer FPS to fill their time.

I can see Brink becoming a highly subscribed shooter. I can see full lobbies, clans and the whole community thing going on. It is a well designed, enjoyable and deep online multiplayer experience. As a whole package though, I can’t help but see the gaping holes it should have filled. In comparison to other competing titles in the genre, I just can’t recommend Brink in its entirety. If you have a hankering for some new online experiences, wait a few months for when Brink drops in price. Until then, you may want to think twice before investing your cash; particularly paying heed to how many of your gaming buddies will be picking up a copy. If your friends have Brink, go for it. If not, leave it where it is.

Xbox 360Canadian Online Gamers Network
Brink for the Xbox 360 is clearly not one of Bethesda’s best offerings. The visuals or sound won’t blow you away and the single player campaign barely holds a candle to other Triple A shooters already on the platform. That being said, the character customizations, fluid character movement, and multiplayer experience are noteworthy achievements for this title. So for those looking for some objective based online cooperative gaming, Brink just may be for you.

Brink is one of the most disappointing games that I have played in a while. I was looking forward to this game and it let me down so much that I was literally shaking my head at times. I will admit that once I started unlocking more weapons and abilities I began to actually have fun with the subpar gameplay, even though that feeling was fleeting. I like to get the full experience before I write my game reviews, and I feel like I got that within the first hour of gameplay. Some people do seem to like the game, so I would borrow it from a friend or rent the game to see what you think, but I will warn you that the replay value will not be high unless you love everything about this game. I like to tell people that Bethesda has never released a bad game, but I think with Brink, I'm not able to truthfully say that anymore.

WindowsCheat Happens
In the end, Brink often feels like it tries too hard to be your new favorite team shooter, rather than merely focusing on what it is - an interesting shooter with some cool ideas. All hope is not lost, as Brink often seems like it's on the verge of becoming a great game and perhaps a patch could fix it. For now though, Brink is an absolute disappointment.

For every element that creates intriguing dynamics or grants fun powers, there is something flawed in its execution that hampers your fun. And even when everything is going smoothly, ever-present visual flaws make enemies at mid to long distance look blurry, further reinforcing the sense that this is a game in which ambition outpaces execution. Brink doesn't make it easy to have a satisfying experience, and though the action can be engaging, you have to weather significant problems to get your money's worth.

The only other gameplay mode in Brink offers four challenges for you to complete in return for new weapons and attachments to add to your already substantial arsenal. Expanding and tweaking your loadout can be very satisfying, but unfortunately, the same can not always be said for Brink. For every element that creates intriguing dynamics or grants fun powers, there is something flawed in its execution that hampers your fun. Though there are fewer obstacles to enjoyment in the PC version, you still get the sense that this is a game in which ambition outpaces execution. Brink doesn't make it easy to have a satisfying experience, and though the action can be very engaging, you have to weather bothersome problems to get your money's worth.

WindowsWe Got This Covered
Brink isn’t a complete failure; it’s an average experience that’s highlighted by a single gameplay mechanic. It’s a fair judgment to see where Splash Damage was coming from and what they were trying to accomplish with the game. More playtesting was required, to discover that having a needlessly nonlinear mission design would actually diminish the ability to enjoy the action that’s taking place. After multiple delays, it’s funny to think how no one during the long conceived development noticed that the game was being held back by something so obvious.

So what’s The Final Verdict? If you buy Brink you should know that you are buying the game because despite the fact that you probably own every team shooter that’s ever been made, you have never owned a team shooter that lets you do all those team shooting things… with a really cool gas mask, and pimp ass dunks. Because honestly, that’s all this game comes down to.
