Despite the grumblings of a few about the sheer number of titles that are based in the period, World War II remains as one of the most expansive and inspiring sources from which to create games from. Yet the current offerings we have been presented with so far haven't done justice to the real events that took place over 60 years ago. Medal of Honor gave us a rollercoaster ride through a Hollywood version of war, while Call of Duty did the same, but more effectively. We haven't seen the equivalent of Saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers in a game yet, something that would show emotion and the real face of warfare. That's what Brothers in Arms sets out to change.

When it comes to action-packed shooters, there seems to be a genre for virtually anyone. Hardcore action fans can pick up games like Doom 3 or Halo 2, both of which allow you to pick up a firearm and mow down wave after wave of enemies. Those that prefer to strategize, on the other hand, have games like Rainbow Six 3 and Full Spectrum Warrior, which require you to think before you act. There's one type of game, however, that generally stands on the action-heavy side of the fence: WWII shooters. From Call of Duty to Medal of Honor, these games drop you on the battlefield, arm you to the teeth, and task you with virtually wiping out the Nazi threat by yourself. That's all about to change, however, with the release of Gearbox's Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30, a title that puts you in control of several small squads and sends you into some of the war's pivotal battles.

Just when we were thinking there was nothing left to do with World War II shooters, along comes this. With tactical depth, a convincing plot, and realistic presentation, Brothers in Arms brings an eight-day stretch from the assault on Normandy in 1945 to dramatic life. It'll bring everything -- including the mud -- to your front room.

I truly enjoyed my time with Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30. Not only did it offer a refreshingly factual wartime story with real characters, real events, and real places, it put it all inside a highly polished game that blends action with squad-based tactics and strategy. You can tell that a whole lot of research went into this title and it really pays off in the end. I can only hope that Gearbox will continue to tell more heroic stories and make Brothers in Arms a series that will continue to evolve this unique genre hybrid.

Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 is one of the most complete on Xbox, and it is easily the best World War II shooter that has ever been released. With everything including innovative and fun gameplay, amazing visuals, great sound, simple control scheme, and enormous replay value, this game should make its way to the home of anyone who enjoys strategy shooters. Those who are more into run and gun games should give the game a trial run, but I am sure that the majority of these people will love the game as well.

All in all a very good shooter, probably one of the best researchedgames out there, with a great story line and great game play, theextras are really interesting, providing you with the history of makingthe game as well as the battle itself. If your a fan at all of the Wargame genre or FPS's then this is the game to get, the replay value isgood, since the harder the difficulty is the more extras you canunlock. If your not a fan of violence strong language or any gore stayaway though, this game packs its share of each.

Brothers in Arms does not feel like a game but rather it feels like an experience that does not fail to overwhelm gamers and effectively envelop them in the horrors of war. We’ve seen great first-person shooters set in World War II (Medal of Honor: Frontline) and really excellent team management and strategy games (Full Spectrum Warrior) but very rarely do we find that action game that combines both so splendidly that we get lost in its addictive action. Do yourself a favor and pick this one up right away.

Brothers in Arms is an exception. It is an exception because it enters into a market overflowing with solid games and succeeds. It is an exception because it promises to be the most realistic WWII game ever made and fulfills that promise. It is an exception because it does not bend to the demands of the casual gamer, but rather stays true to qualities which make it great. It is an exception because it is one of the very first games to move onto a new level by being able to manipulate you're emotions. Brothers in Arms is a superb game. In the end, I believe Brothers in Arms, like the war it represents, will be remembered as a defining mark of its generation, and I believe the game fully deserves such a recognition.

Last year when the crew from Next Level Gaming journeys to California to report from the 2004 E3, some of us were just in awe by what we saw. It was my first show and I was just overwhelmed by the place. It is like a kid in a candy store when you are a gaming freak and you go to where all of the huge game companies show their new goods for the next 1-2 years. One of the titles that stuck in my mind was Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30. The way Ubisoft set up the presentation of the game was pretty cool.

BIA is a more-than worthy addition to the over-crowded WWII shooter genre in general and provides much more than just a run-and-gun game, it’s a thrill-ride from start to finish that coupled with the different skill levels and realism-style gameplay won’t appeal to the instant action crowd or immediately leap out and grab some gamers, but if you stick with it – you’ll be rewarded.

WindowsGamingExcellence
Overall, Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 is a solid title that isn’t afraid to be all grown up. The plot and setting (although not necessarily the characters) are of Hollywood worthiness and the gameplay is stunning in both single and multiplayer modes. Visuals are vibrant and crisp but at the same time faithful to that “lived in” look. Authentic sound effects, understated music, and well-delivered monologue during chapter interludes also contribute to the drama. In short, this game represents a WWII tactical shooter done right; it conveys the often grisly realities of war but at the same time provides an exciting and rewarding gaming experience. And with the seemingly endless supply of war-themed shooters flooding the market today, other developers would be wise to take their cues from this top-flight title.

Wolfenstein, Medal of Honor, Call of Duty... Until today these were the games that defined World War II action on the Xbox. Now you can throw them all away. Not only is Gearbox's Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 the best World War II shooter on the Xbox, it's also one of the best games of any genre for the system. Now that doesn't mean that it's perfect. It has some obvious flaws, for one thing, as well as some unique design decisions that are sure to frustrate certain types of action gamers.

By bringing together the best aspects of squad-based shooters with the freedom of a more action-oriented game, Brothers in Arms offers a unique gameplay experience in the unlikeliest of genres: a World War II shooter. The campaign is varied and lengthy enough to keep players thrilled from beginning to end. There's even good incentive to play through again at higher difficulties. Combined with a well-designed and thought-out multiplayer aspect, Brothers in Arms offers one of the best World War II gaming experiences to date.

I've always been a huge fan of World War II and I’ve got shelves full of books and dvds to prove that. Every young boy goes through a phase of interest in that bloody chapter of our history. In my time (the good old days) that hunger for information was nurtured by books and movies. But times change, why look up information in books when you can participate in the carnage yourself, be the hero and save the world from those bloody nazis!? So anyway, you could imagine the smile on my face when I received my reviewcopy of Brothers in Arms. I’d heard quite a lot of this game and it was expected to be pretty darn good.

Brothers in Arms is without doubt the best World War Two game available on Xbox and is unique amongst first person tactical shooters. It effortlessly blends the tactics of Full Spectrum Warrior with the fast paced action of any number of shooters. The learning curve is spot on and the graphics and in particular, the audio are of a very high standard. The single-player missions are varied and well designed with an unheard of attention to historical accuracy. If you are a fan of World War Two games, tactical shooters or first person shooters in general, you will not be disappointed with BiA.

Gearbox has put an enormous amount of effort into making Brothers in Arms authentic and realistic, but still fun at the same time. Their brand of tactical action meshes perfectly with the first-person viewpoint, and the story and characters are some of the best you'll see in a game like this. With a great single player game and unique multiplayer mode, I can definitely recommend this game to just about any action game fan out there.

XboxGame Revolution
For a war roughly sixty years behind us, it seems odd that World War II has been one of the most widely used backdrops in recent video gaming. Part of this is surely due to the intensity of the landmark Saving Private Ryan, which in turn prompted the success of games like Call of Duty. Most WWII first-person shooters stick to the same old run and gun formula with hopes of cashing in on the popularity of the genre, although only a few games like Battlefield 1942 have managed to break the mold and rise up the ranks.

Now, we’re finally treated to another soldier brave enough to cover new ground in this old arena. Ubisoft and Gearbox's excellent Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 tells the tale of Sgt. Matt Baker and the boys of the 101st Airborne, who were dropped into enemy territory in preparation for D-Day. The Xbox version made serious waves earlier this month, and I'm happy to report the PC version is largely identical.

I had said in the Xbox review of Brothers in Arms that it was easily the best World War 2 game on the system. Now, two weeks later, we've had a chance to take a look at the PC version of the game. The content and overall quality are exactly the same on both systems, making Brothers in Arms an excellent game no matter which platform you choose. The competition is certainly a little tougher on the PC but, even so, no game delivers quite the same type of experience as Brothers in Arms.

A bullet nearly hits me. The image gets blurry, I can’t move anymore. A high monotone beep makes me slightly deaf. I look around and see how my men are having a hard time defending my life from the “Krauts”. Slowly I regenerate my powers. The image gets clearer and the monotone beeping is replaced for gunshots, yelling and huge flying bombers. Dropped back into the compelling war atmosphere…

Wahnsinn!

After the Normandy Invasion level In Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, everything changed. A platoon of war clones shipped, each one adding new scripted rollercoaster rides and celebrity voiceovers. But not one truly innovated—until now. Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30, at its most basic level, starts on par with all the good war shooters out there and just gets better. The amazing part is that by incorporating a new, easy-to-control strategic element and good A.I., developer Gearbox has created the first WWII game to truly make you feel like you’re not fighting alone.

Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 is gewoonweg adembenemend.

There's no place for Rambo types here, this is a thinking person's game where patience and tactics are rewarded. rothers In Arms does hold the title as the most realistic FPS WWII on the market. However, whether it is the best is still up in the air. The poor accuracy of the guns (for authenticities sake) and short levels take away from the gorgeous and amazing sounding single player campaign. As for multiplayer, the difficulty in finding a game and the long load screens dilute the experience. If you're looking for a game that will recreate what it felt like to be in Normandy on D-Day and after, get this game. For those of you who don’t want a history lesson and just want to bust the crap out of Nazis with guns that work and a multiplayer experience that has a deathmatch option, get Call of Duty for the PC.

Brothers In Arms is a fantastic game. It blends the elements of strategy with the all-too-common FPS genre like no other game has done before it on a console. The graphics are gritty and realistic, the sounds will make you nervous as hell, and the immense feeling of accomplishment that comes with successfully executing a good strategic assault both in the single-player campaigns as well as multiplayer is overwhelming. Do yourself a favor and grab every Medal of Honor game you have, grab the yawn-fest that is Call of Duty, bring them down to your local gaming shop, and trade them all in for Brothers In Arms. I guarantee you won’t be missing them once you sink your teeth into this game. Gearbox put a lot of work into making this game as authentic as possible and it truly shows. This is the WW II game that you have been waiting for.

All in all, I thought BiA:RtH30 was a great game to play. I’d hesitate to declare it the best WW2 shooter ever, what with Call of Duty 1 & 2 out there as well as the much-underrated Hidden & Dangerous 2 on PC, but I’d say it’s in the same ballpark. It won’t float everyone’s boat, but then what game does? If you like games with a WW2 setting and if you like FPSs but sometimes wish they were a bit more tactical and realistic, you really should give this a go. I did and had one of my most rewarding gaming experiences in a while as a result.

Brothers In Arms doesn't try to be like other WWII FPS games and that's a very good thing because even though the subject matter has been done to death, the game feels fresh and exciting. The multiplayer game is decidely weak and honestly not even worth mentioning, but the single player experience is worthwhile enough to camp in a foxhole while risking dysentery, footrot and a bullet between the eyes. This is NOT your usual run of the mill war game and if you give it the chance it deserves you'll see that I speak the truth.

With the amount of World War II shooters we have seen over the past few years it's easy to become blasé about other titles stepping into the genre. Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 is sufficiently different to warrant your attention though and it has a unique feel to it which is impressive given the amount of titles covering this period. The SAV and command ring control system really work well and let you feel like you're issuing the orders instead of simply attempting to run through countless enemies. We should also mention that the AI of your team-mates in carrying out these orders is also impressive and they also know when to use their initiative which is something you don't see that often. Gearbox Software have created a great game in Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 and it's one that we hope spawns a sequel.

A lot of gamers have grown tired of World War II shooters. Especially with duds like Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault and short 'on-rails' shooters as Call of Duty some seem to think nothing new can be done in the sub-genre. Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 has proven the opposite, adding depth in both gameplay and story, with some excellent technology to back it all up. One of the best World War II shooters I've ever played, and certainly one of the better shooters of recent years.

Like the very game itself, Brothers in Arms: The Road to Hill 30 is fighting an upstream battle from the outset. As a typical looking World War II first-person shooter full of tired genre conventions (think earth tones, wooden rifles, and Germans with biker helmets), Brothers in Arms faces overwhelming cynicism from a generation of would-be grunts weaned on the trauma of Saving Private Ryan and EA's Medal of Honor series. But what these static screenshots don't convey is the game's refreshing consistency of design, where developer Gearbox has visualized a hellacious sandbox to test your tactical mettle. You thought you were sick of WWII games? After playing Brothers in Arms, you'll be asking why there aren't more military shooters like this one. It's that good.

Forget what you know about World War II: the bulletproof supersoldier single-handedly storming Nazi bunkers; the first-aid kit on every fallen foe, as if band-aids and aspirin were enough to shake off the pain of being shot; the mounted MGs that trigger purple heart lust in whole platoons when touched. This isn't that John Wayne shoot-em-up.

And on that note, we have our faith in World War II games utterly, comprehensively restored. It seems incredible that such a saturated genre can still produce something fresh, but Gearbox deserves big manly bear hugs and ferocious slaps on the back for delivering on its promises. Its current chart success is well deserved, and for those of you bored of Medal Of Honor and jaded about Call Of Duty's me-too approach and stubbornly unconvinced that Brothers In Arms really doesn't offer anything new, we suggest you try it. You might just love it.

AT FIRST GLANCE, Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 looks like a ton of other first-person shooters. It's set during WWII. It's got pretty graphics and lots of guns. $#!% blows up. But there's an interesting game ticking under the hood, one that emphasizes tactics and strategy as much as blood and bullets. It doesn't quite reach the epic heights of some other WWII shooters, but Gearbox's squad-based game manages to achieve a double-shot quite rare among videogames these days: innovation and polish.

The game is commendable. Its biggest attractions are commanding player’s squads, tanks, enjoying a highly realistically and squad A.I. developed game engine. Add a lot of minor features mentioned and you have a great game, worth your money. As a down side, missions do get repetitive at times, but still you will squeeze many pleasurable hours from Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30. It sparks from the crowd. Many will like jumping from the back on enemy tanks, tossing grenades through their hatch and seeing the tank move left right as its crew goes panic, finally bursting in explosion.

Gearbox really should be applauded for their efforts on Brothers In Arms: Road To Hill 30. They refrained from turning this into a First Person Shooter, and it comes out for the better as a result. This game is so much more and requires some quick thinking during battles, not just an itchy trigger finger. The PC and XBox versions are a little better technically so if you have those systems you're probably better off with those versions however if you only have a PS2 you will still do very well to pick up this title. Two weeks ago, Xbox owners were treated to a wonderfully exciting World War 2 shooter called Brothers in Arms. Combining solid shooter mechanics with some innovative tactical squad management features, Brothers in Arms really stands out on all three platforms. But though the content and the overall design is the same across all three platforms, the PS2 version lacks some of the convenience and visual appeal of the other two versions. Still, the unique design makes this a very attractive game for PS2 owners who are looking for a fun and immersive World War 2 action experience.

Other military games might be more gung-ho or more over the top, but Brothers in Arms gets closer to the tactics and camaraderie of working as a well-oiled machine in the heat of battle. Brothers In Arms is a welcome War inspired game to appear on Xbox and whilst it may share some similarities to games like Full Spectrum Warrior and Rainbow Six 3 has enough personality of its own to stand out. Once you start to get to control a decent sized squad the game really does come alive if you are a player that likes to incorporate tactics in your game play. I think those players that opt to try and do all the killing themselves are perhaps missing out on the whole point behind the game even though the game does allow you to do this should you so choose.

Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30 is a WWII shooter that gives you a sense of the HBO series Band of Brothers. Actually if there are any fans out there, the first part of the game gives you the feeling that this title should have indeed been called Band of Brothers. I would imagine that HBO was not going to give the nod to let the publishers use their title so BIA is a good substitue. You are SGT Matt Baker of the 502 Airborn, a young soft-spoken man from the "show me" state who volunteered as a paratrooper, but never expected to lead a squad.

Brothers in Arms puts you in the boots of Sgt. Matt Baker, a soldier who is hastily put in charge of a troop of soldiers and isn’t quite sure how to lead them properly. Each mission begins with a narration by Baker, who expresses his lack of confidence and fear of leading his men to their deaths. The missions are based on actual ones that the 101st Airborne performed during World War II, so the game has a very heightened sense of realism in that regard. The story elements are a definite highlight in the game, as you begin to feel attachments to the characters in the game as well as feel Baker’s plight as the plot progresses.

In a nutshell, when its 'gears' are clicking, Brothers in Arms manages to deepen the shooter genre with the addition of some great tactical gameplay and relatively realistic depiction of infantry warfare. It also adds a multiplayer component and the single-player game is fairly lengthy. The interface is superb, and overall, it would be fair to say that the squad AI handles themselves really well. Sadly, the instances where the scripted sequences would break, and where AI would display signs of stupidity (just go up close to a German soldier and you'll see what I mean), ruined to a degree my personal enjoyment of the game. It might well be that during your time with the game, you will not experience any of these problems, but I find that highly unlikely. This was a very good effort by Gearbox that sadly lacked somewhat in the execution department, making it not as good as the reigning king of the genre.

Like we said, for the game to work at all, you have to care about your buddies, to get upset when they die. And you do. The acting's not great, the dialogue's ropey but they've been injected with enough personality as to be affecting. They holler 'Bakeeerrr!' when you die, they make cracks about Nazis drinking blood for breakfast, they look terrified when faced with death and they all trust you implicitly, following you to death's door and beyond. It's impossible not to care about these people and you will be upset when one pegs it. There's no option to send a ham to each man's widow, but you can't help wishing that there were. Road To Hill 30 could have done with more polishing up and sometimes it's infuriatingly difficult or inconsistent, despite its undoubted depth. Yet, as a reminder of the harsh realities of war, it's undoubtedly a success. Don't expect to have an easy ride with it but, sometimes, this is one of the most affecting, games on PS2.

Brothers in Arms is one sturdy shooter that has plenty of depth beyond the traditional FPS element of shooting people. Times can be rather tricky and testing when you are in the thick of the action, but we found it all the more rewarding when we prevailed, whether that was through flanking our enemy or lobbing a grenade into the hatch of a fearsome tank. If you like your shooters to look, play and sound realistic and harsh, then you need look no further then this most fitting of examples.

"Братья" — не Medal of Honor или Call of Duty.

Ubisoft/Gearbox latest WW2 title "Brother in Arms Road to Hill 30" is a true magnificent authentic WW2 game. I have never felt so evolved and interested in a War game until now. BIA has a great storyline, which is based on a true story. The modelling, soldiers, landscapes (even houses etc) are all authentic thanks to the numerious of photographs that the developer observed and recreated. While there is no real deathmatch option available, BIA still keeps it decent with its own way of multiplayer mode which we highly liked. If you're looking for THE most authentic WW2 game then Brother in Arms Road to Hill 30 is the game you have been waiting for.

Overall, I would say that BIA is an average World War II shooter, with elements of strategy implemented somewhat successfully. However, the game is also available on consoles, and I can't help but think the game would have been so much better had it been developed solely for PC. As a PC shooter, I would only really recommend it if you can find it significantly cheaper than full price. Despite all that it does right, there are still many aspects of the game left wanting.

The main strength of Brothers in Arms is irrefutably the gameplay. If you are into war time games this is definately a must buy game for you. If you liked other WWII FPS's such as Medal of Honour, think about how those games would be if they were combined with squad based mechanics from games such as Rainbow six and from a gameplay standpoint thatís exactly what you get from Brothers in Arms.

So overall with a solid single player and slightly different Live game BIA survives the onslaught. More real than the rest of the WW2 competition, but better than Call of Duty? The jury’s still out for me…

Brothers in Arms puts you in the role of Sgt. Matt Baker, a real-life member of the 101st Airborne Division. The game's 17-chapter campaign stretches over a week's time. You'll start out the night before D-Day, when you and the rest of the division parachute behind enemy lines into France, fighting your way into and capturing the town of Carentan. Each chapter and all the settings are based closely on actual missions carried out by Baker's platoon. As you beat each mission, you'll unlock extras, such as photographs and reconnaissance photos, which show you how closely the game's levels match what Baker's platoon fought through in the critical first days of the invasion.

All in all, when going into Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30, I may have been expecting too much, hype tends to do that to many people. Playing through the game killed any enthusiasm I may have had about a refresher to the stale WW2 genre. Gearbox’s latest port is much better than Halo, but is plagued with a considerable amount of irritating issues. While it offers a unique, new experience to the platform, it is nothing that is groundbreaking but can still be fun to play through once just for the historical novelty. While multiplayer also possesses some interesting concepts, the lack of variety in modes and maps soon becomes apparent and losses appeal quickly. The bottom line is, while Brothers in Arms is not fundamentally horrible, it is not anywhere close to what the hype made it seem like and will disappoint many.

Realism seems to be the name of the game with Brothers in Arms. Despite the issues that have been mentioned here, Gearbox should get some credit for doing things differently by applying real soldier strategy into the game. Sure, there are going to be some people that will play it for an hour and realize that this isn't their kind of game; however, for others who appreciate a little strategy to go with their shooting, Brothers in Arms delivers a rather intense war-playing experience that goes along with a fascinating story told from the perspective of the soldiers who lived it. If Gearbox can fix a few balancing issues and perhaps soften the difficulty curve a little bit, their next project could be a dandy.

If you are going to get this game no matter what, make sure it's for PC or Xbox. The game plays so well on those platforms and the PS2 version just seems like a slap together and ship it out product. Still, if you only have a PS2 and want the game, you will enjoy it, just not as much as you would on the other platforms. After a while into the game you don't worry about them as much because you get a feeling of what you have to do to flank and not rely on the fire team a lot. I guess a better way to look at it, if you want a harder version of the game this one is for you. If you can rent it or borrow it from a friend, do that, just avoid paying $49.95.

Brothers In Arms: Road to Hill 30 is the first of two in the Brothers In Arms series for PS2, Xbox and PC. It tries to redefine the genre, which is the WW2 shooter. Bending the rules of the traditional FPS, BIA pits you against the Germans in small bursts instead of massive attacks. The biggest twist is you have your own squad to control and you are not super-human. Suppressing fire is essential and flanking is a necessity if you want to last more than five minutes. Over the course of the game you will learn to command different squads, and even tanks, to lead the allies to victory.

Brothers In Arms isn’t a bad game by any means. It features a lot of nice concepts and marks out its own territory rather than slipping into a carbon copy of the next first-person shooter, and the immersion that the atmosphere and accuracy provide certainly pulls you further into the game than most other titles of its ilk. It’s disappointing that a bad engine and rushed execution detract from the overall experience, leaving it with nothing really remarkable.
