But overall Brutal Legend is better than it’s ever been, both as a single-player open-world game unlike any you’ve ever played and as one of the best unique takes on real-time strategy since Sacrifice.

I loved playing Brutal Legend, and some of that may be attributed to growing up listening to a lot of metal, going to shows, wearing nothing but black tees and jeans, the whole bit. The soundtrack in particular won me over from the very start. But despite all the references to this beloved material, I also felt satisfied as a gamer, challenged by its unique blend of exploration, action and strategy. While I was prepared for a thoroughly entertaining storyline, and was not disappointed, I was pleasantly surprised by how much fun it was to wage war in and explore this lovingly-crafted world. Regardless of whether or not you've seen Iron Maiden in concert, you'll likely still want to share a few laughs and slay a few demons with Eddie and company.

From a critical standpoint, there really isn't a lot to complain about here. It's not necessarily a visual benchmark for pushing graphics engines, but that's more than made up for in art-direction, and it's a more than competant visual outlay anyway. The game-world is massive with tonnes to see and explore, though I only wish Eddie weren't so susceptible to death by water - there're tantalising islands off in the distance that just scream exploration. The only other drawback I could see for the game is if you absolutely hate metal, or have no sense of humour whatsoever, otherwise this is an unbelievably fun gaming experience with an excellent story, great art, stellar music and some seriously cool gameplay ideas. If you haven't checked it out yet, I highly recommend you do. \m/

Brütal Legend will appeal to those of you who enjoy Heavy Metal and Rock music, the soundtrack is impressive and the game goes further than just completing the missions, there's all those collectables to unlock and a multiplayer mode. It is an open world game, which can be done as you please. The story is good, amusing and there are even romantic scenes. Can you survive the Battle of the Bands?

This is one of the best games of the year and there is a reason it won awards at E3. The game is a blast to play, the story is very well written, the characters are voiced well, and the music is awesome. If you love metal this game was made for you. If you don't there are things to like about the game, but you won't get the full experience its intended to be.

Brutal Legend isn't quite perfect and there is room for improvement (it's a little short, side quests are repetitive...), but when the credits roll you'll find yourself hoping for a sophomore release. Double Fine created a rich heavy metal universe and backstory full of great characters and creatures, with potential for an out-of-this-world sequel. Here's hoping Schafer and company get a chance to take us there.

Brutal Legend started playing like a God of War style fighter and then blossomed into a great RTS and really caught me completely unawares. This is yet another must have game from EA, especially so for those who love to rock

Brutal Legend is a tour de force that wraps up humor, music, and clever gameplay into one highly polished package. You haven't played a game quite like this before and won't want to miss it. Tim Schafer is one of the funniest guys in games and Jack Black is one of the funniest guys in movies -- together they'll keep you ROFLing (although the laughs do taper off as you work your way through the game). But regardless, Brutal Legend was well worth the wait. It may not have the polish of a game like Metal Gear Solid, but it sure does do almost everything else right, and that counts for something. Also, even though the core story is shorter than 10 hours, there are still a number of side-quests to accomplish, adding to the replay value a good bit. My hats go off to Double Fine for a job well done.

You owe it to yourself to give this game a test drive at some point, just for the laughs if nothing else. It may be rough around the edges and have an RTS system that would confuse some people, but overall it’s a solid game that will entertain you time and time again.

Whether it's excellent vocal performances from heavy hitters of metal or a strong multiplayer element, Brutal Legend is a game that continually surprises, and it does so in a genuinely fun and interesting way. And Double Fine deserves some major respect for keeping so many aspects of the game closely tied to its subject matter. Of course, Brutal Legend also has some shortcomings. The secondary missions are weak and the single-player campaign lasts about seven hours if you're not too keen on unlocking every single last shrine or secret item. In that respect, it's unfortunate that there's just not more of the good stuff, such as the on-foot missions with boss battles or more fleshed-out side quests. Otherwise, Brutal Legend is just about the finest tribute to this genre of music that a fan could hope for, and its successful execution of real-time strategy elements in an action setting is something that should get everyone off their feet and clapping.

Ultimately, I’d say the PC version of Brutal Legend is worth throwing money down for, at least for anyone who liked what they saw of the console version but didn’t have the means to play it, or who just plain never got around to it. While nothing really new has been added, it’s a serviceable port of a game that still stands out as unique, in a world that has yet to be replaced – or even challenged – in terms of its unique setting and storyline. $19.99 USD is a more than fair price to ask for this game, and considering how Steam discounts usually go, it won’t be long before this title is an absolute must-have for anyone who can tolerate the curious RTS design decisions.

But really, those things don't make the story any less entertaining, the rock god theme less enjoyable, nor the characters' well-animated faces less expressive. And with long practice and good friends, the multiplayer can be incredibly rewarding. Brütal Legend proves that Tim Schafer and the Double Fine crew can weave an entertaining experience that rises above its flaws.

I'm a casual metal fan, and I have a pretty decent knowledge of the tropes of the metal universe, so most of the humour and the overall theme of the game wasn't lost on me, but I'd hesitate to play the multiplayer if it's simply more of RTS lite gameplay. If you're big on your metal, Brütal Legend was made for you and you'll learn to deal with the quirks in the gameplay. Alternatively, if you hate metal there isn't much appeal for you here - you'll have to wait until Dave Chappelle stars in Tim Schafer's Original Gangsta* or something.

Xbox 360Thunderbolt Games
Brutal Legend’s multiple gameplay styles are competent enough on their own, although I feel the RTS elements could have been explored more during the single player. It’s fine in multiplayer, but during this busy holiday period it will be hard to sustain longevity against some of the bigger titles. It’s not complex enough for the hardcore crowd and it remains to be seen how more casual gamers will react to this odd design choice and questionable functionality. Nonetheless, it’s a bold decision and it works relatively well for the most part. The hack and slash action is fun, and the world and characters that inhabit it are all exceptional with some top notch voicework from all involved. If you enjoy those elements then it’s worth taking the ride. It just might get a little bumpy across the relatively short journey time.

We were hoping for a little more innovation from Brutal Legend beyond the standard sandbox set up and button mashing, axe-wielding action. But then again, if the Gods of Metal are pleased with it, then who are we to complain?
79
PlayStation 3Fragland.net
Brutal Legend manages to display the Heavy Metal world in game form and even may bring people not familiar with the music genre to appreciate it. The world is filled with fantasy, even unique and contains a ton of artefacts linked to Heavy Metal. The hack&slash and free-roaming parts are very well worked out and fun to play, but personally I couldn't really get to like the RTS Battle Stages. Tim Shafer finally succeeded to create a "commercial" game and I'll keep hoping that EA can keep suppressing its urge for sequels to give games like this a chance.

In spite of its faults and flaws, overall I had a good time with Brutal Legend. This was in no small part due to the fact that I enjoyed the game's story, soundtrack, and fantastic setting. If rock's not your thing, though, the gameplay on its own is probably not enough to make the game worth your while.

For all the moments of greatness that Brutal Legend has, it is brought down by a lack of unified gameplay structure. I still can’t help but like it, despite myself. So screw it. Let’s sit back, take a swig of beer and shout “ROCK ON!”

All in all, as a digital re-release for $20, you can’t go wrong with Brutal Legend PC. At the very least, you’ll appreciate its soundtrack, characters, and metal-inspired world… The game could be considered a bonus and it"d still be worthwhile.

PlayStation 3Game Revolution
All in all, Brutal Legend isn’t perfect, but it’s still great. If you like metal, you will appreciate Brutal Legend in all its glory. It’s genuinely funny, where other games’ attempts at humor are just a series of dick jokes. It has a great, though still lacking, soundtrack. And let's face it, we will never see another game like this. Ever.

Xbox 360GamersHell.com
With Schafer's unrelenting enthusiasm for Brütal Legend, it's clear to see where it would have been easy to get carried away with the concept. In a case where style supersedes substance, the game presents some interesting eye candy, but, at times, falters to chuggy framerates; and delivers believable characters with compelling voice-acting, in favor of less-refined gameplay. While the idea is there, and it's great to see a director and studio trying new things, the execution unfortunately falls a bit flat.

PlayStation 3The Review Busters
The best part of this game is the music. So why should one have to pay full price for a game like this? Not everyone might feel how I do with this game but I can say with a straight face that this is the worst Tim Schafer game created. It doesn’t have that Schafer touch to it and quite frankly Jack Black sort of annoys me in this game. Desperate sandbox gamers should pick it up, maybe even diehard Tim Schafer fans. Everyone else should wait a little longer and think real hard if you want to take a trip into a dimension full of heavy metal.

Ultimately, this is an upscaled version of the exact same Brutal Legend experience console gamers got in 2009, warts and all. A few minor technical hiccups aside (which the developer seems dedicated to fixing with patches), the game runs well. With Brutal Legend's new graphics options and its budget-friendly price point, Double Fine seems to have done most things right in bringing the game to the PC--effective mouse and keyboard controls being the obvious exception. Plug in a gamepad, though, and you have a fine version of what remains a unique action strategy experience. Just be sure you know what type of game you're getting into.

Brütal Legend is a great game to visit and experience but the gameplay doesn’t make us want to stay. A shame really as the game gets a lot of points for having an excellent world to inhabit and characters to interact with. It’s just a shame the actual gameplay and lack of re-playability doesn’t really elevate this much over a really good rental.

With loads of humor, a good story, and great visuals, it's easy to see how people might enjoy Brutal. It's a bit of an acquired taste, though. Not everyone will like the game's emphasis on an experimental breed of real-time strategy, especially if they pick up the game expecting a hack-and-slasher or sandbox action game. That, combined with the shortish length, make me consider it a better rental than purchase. It's worth giving a spin, at any rate.

Xbox 360Gaming since 198x

Brutal Legend is an intense, unique, and fairly bumpy ride, one that puts developer Double Fine's strengths and weaknesses in pretty sharp relief. The vision of this heavy metal dream world is strikingly rendered, and the comic timing is some of the best you'll find in a video game. The gameplay, as singular a combination of gameplay styles as it is, suffers from being a jack of all trades and master of none. Like most teenage metalheads, this game has got issues, but if you're willing to look past some very uneven gameplay, Brutal Legend will rock you. Hard.
