Big Game Hunter is far from perfect but it certainly does a great job of bringing all the elements surrounding this sport to life. There are a number of things that could have been improved upon (like the controls) but if you’re into the sport of hunting this game will surely find a lot to like about this game. Those gamers looking for non-stop action will have to look elsewhere.

All in all, Cabela’s Big Game Hunter 2005 Adventure delivers on many fronts. For gamers looking for an enjoyable hunting experience, this title will provide that. Plenty of animals to hunt, a wide selection of locales to enjoy, and a wide selection of equipment all come together to create an enjoyable hunting game. With that said, this isn’t a game for everyone. For players looking for an all out action experience, steer clear of this title. Patience is the key, as waiting in one spot for quite some time is often necessary. While the game does deliver on a lot of the essentials of hunting, it also lacks in certain areas as well. The controls feel unresponsive, and the overall pacing of the game is sluggish. The animal A.I. isn’t great, and the graphics are down right ugly. Fans of this series will certainly look past these flaws, and players looking of an enjoyable hunting game, with a small list of problems, should as well.

Here's a test to see if your father would enjoy Cabela's Big Game Hunter: 2005 Adventures. Does he watch programs dedicated to hunting or subscribe to any related magazines? Does he like the ideas and concepts of videogames, but never takes the time to play them? Answer yes to both of those questions and you'll have a surefire winner for your dad with Cabela's Big Game Hunter.

I like reviewing hunting and fishing games, just to see how stupid they are. Frankly, this one is more of a sim and it actually does give you a challenge of sorts. If anything, reviewing games like Big Game Hunter gives me the opportunity to shoot my mouth off. If you feel the urge to go out and shoot wildlife, try a camera. That way other people will be able to thrill at the site of that same wild beast.

Big Game Hunter so closely resembles the Deer Hunt series, there is little reason to own both of the 2005 releases. Deer Hunt features more refined graphics yet it lacks the story mode and varied species from Game Hunter. I recommend renting both of the games and then picking a favorite. In my opinion, the polished Deer Hunter easily comes out on top. Hopefully, the next version of this game will include a more in-depth adventure mode with some improved visuals.
