I know this is going to sound like a "no duh" kind of review; but if you're not a hunter, you're not going to like this game. There's a lot of detail involved with how to set up your kill, how to position yourself in your environment, and things of that nature; but Cabela's fails to transcend its subject matter to broaden its appeal for all audiences. Plus, I just can't get into shooting a moose - digital or otherwise. Sure, I can mow down countless humans in a FPS, but drilling a gentle animal is not my idea of a good time. Plus, humans usually deserve it more, anyway.

Regardless of what any one else says, hunting is probably the world's oldest profession. It was born the moment the first guy got hungry and realized he couldn't eat dirt or rocks. If you're used to grabbing a railgun and strafing your way across enemy lines, Cabela's Big Game Hunter is a nice change of pace and an excellent way to work on your video game marksmanship. It has some minor gameplay annoyances, but overall it delivers the slow-paced but nonetheless thrilling experience of game hunting.

Cabela's Big Game Hunter has no glaring problems, but it also lacks major triumphs. Graphics and sound are average at best and I feel that game would seriously benefit from a more realistic portrayal of the outdoors. The game would also benefit from a more dynamic stealth system that would take the cover of foliage into account. The game includes a large number of hunting accessories but only the animal lures really affect game play. Overall, Big Game Hunter works as a niche hunting game for fans of the genre. If you are not happy with a slow and deliberate style of game play this one may not be for you.

n the end, Cabela's Big Game Hunter for the PlayStation 2 is only going to win over a very select portion of the world's gamers. And while the game would most likely not entertain anyone who isn't already into hunting, it should suit either an inexperienced hunter looking for a virtual hunting experience, or a casual gamer who happens to like the sport. So if you fall into one of these categories and have a PlayStation 2, this is a budget game you might want to give a try.
