With its fast pace, pleasant lack of padding, and absurdist humor wrapped up in an outdoor adventure's trappings, Cabela's Survival: Shadows of Katmai ended up being a complete surprise that was an order of magnitude more enjoyable than I would have ever expected. The only thought on my mind after bringing the game to its conclusion? Please let there be a sequel.

Despite this, much of the game is a joy to play, providing more than its share of simple, disposable fun. Moreover, Cabela's Survival: Shadows of Katmai nails the spirit of its protagonist and the atmosphere of the adventure. Although its scenario is silly and many of its incidents are ridiculous, the game succeeds because it never takes itself very seriously. If only the social forces that shaped it could be so readily disregarded.

The whole package is, of course, fugly and cheap. But whether it’s surprisingly enjoyable dogsledding sections or physics gaffes that often see dead animals inadvertently do the splits, I had a smile on my face throughout. Just remember, kids: every single critter in Cabela’s animal kingdom is a dick. Channel your inner Elmer Fudd. The hunt is on.

Cabela’s Survival is sold solo or bundled with the Top Shot Elite rifle controller, which offers more exacting aim during hunting sequences. But unless you expect to play (and replay) the bonus shooting galleries — railed shooters that have you blast furred and feathered wildlife in House of the Dead fashion — then a standard controller is preferred. Otherwise, the game can easily be finished in an afternoon, leaving hunting fans wondering why they wasted it playing a lackluster action-adventure game.

The idea behind Cabela's Survival is one that could be great, in time, if Activision will allow it to become the so-bad-it's-good kind of series that would turn it into a top-of-the-list budget game for birthday gifts. Shadows of Katmai tries to be too serious with its approach and ends up becoming one of those horror movies that isn't good or bad enough to recommend.

Cabela’s Survival: Shadows of Katmai looked to be an exciting new entry in the Cabela’s franchise, but it instead finds itself trekking directly into Uncharted territory without the necessary finesse and polish it needs to withstand its high profile competition – a far cry from the niche genre the Cabela’s series is known and enjoyed for. We’ve got to give the team credit for trying to expand the series into something new, but sadly all the pieces don’t quite fit together properly and this survival trip just isn’t worth the effort.
