Gritty realism aside, no other game has ever grabbed me from the opening level and captivated my interest from start to finish like Call of Duty 2: Big Red One. I literally played this game until I was too tired to play anymore, went to bed, got up, and played it some more. There was one night where I even dreamed I was playing the game. If you are looking to play one of the most engaging, educational, and entertaining games of the year...yes the YEAR...then Big Red One needs to be in your permanent Xbox collection. It's a ride you won't soon forget and you might just get a whole new appreciation for what a few thousand men did for this country sixty years ago.

Call of Duty 2: Big Red One is the ultimate World War II experience on the Xbox console. The gameplay is extremely fun, varied, and action packed. Graphics are overall well done, featuring many special effects and nice realistic environments; however, nothing there is astonishing. Audio is top notch, and multiplayer adds to the replay value. If you don't plan on getting an Xbox 360 anytime soon, this is definitely something you should pick up. If you are planning on picking up an Xbox 360 soon, wait off on this and pick up Call of Duty 2. Overall, Call of Duty 2: Big Red One is a blast from start to finish and money well spent.

Just when I thought you’d had a gutful of WWII shooters something this good comes along – a polished and highly playable game with an engaging storyline – the only other WWII game I’ve played that’s this good is its 360 brethren, but this Big Red One (brought to you by the guys who did the Spider Man games!) actually eclipses it at times in terms of settings and level design, and shows that there’s plenty of life in the old Xbox yet. The Big Red One gets a big silver 9 out of 10.

All in all Call of Duty 2: Big Red One is the best 3rd party fps on the GameCube. Buy it and you'll be thrown into a war torn world where your only friend is your gun and your family is your platoon, so pick up that rifle and go give jerry a damn good thrashing!

The content pretty much speaks for itself. World War II made heroes of men, but many more ended up in unmarked graves. Parents have to decide how to approach this type of game on their own as recommendations can only go so far.

Although we have all fought our way through WWII countless times by now, it may just be worth playing through again. In this title Activision provides what is arguably the best WWII shooter available for the PS2, and what may also be the best shooter of any kind for the PS2. The combination of good graphics, great sound and intense action makes for a very immersive game that will be hard to put down.

Call of Duty 2: Big Red One isn't quite as robust as Call of Duty 2 for PC and the Xbox 360, but the excitement is still there. The more I played, the more I enjoyed playing. That said, sometimes a little scripting is needed to bring such an important historical event to life, but decisions made on the field, in the heat of combat are what won the war. The next time around, it'd be nice to see a bit more of that flexibility in the progression of the game.

Deploy, fight, sacrifice, and prevail. This is what the Big Red One does. It’s their job to overcome any obstacles. Excellent sounds, graphics, and gameplay are rooted in Call of Duty 2: Big Red One. Realistic sights and sounds coupled with replayability follow the groundwork laid out by the Call of Duty legacy. Worth more than a simple rental, you will get caught up in the lives of your squad as you progress from Africa to Germany.

Big Red One isn’t quite “the one” we’ve been waiting for, but it’s a polished and extremely exciting shooter that won’t have anyone reaching for a pillow. The vehicular missions are some of the most daring, cramming the player into a tiny space with nowhere to run. Either you hit your target or you fail. On foot you have more options, but your weapons are weaker and there may not be anywhere to hide. Scenarios like these keep player interest high and never leave us with a sense of anything but exhilaration.

Call of Duty 2 is a heavily scripted first-person shooter that throws approachability out the window in favor of more stylized moment to moment wow scenes. These mostly work throughout the course of this meticulously planned title, but sometimes the feverish pacing and ridiculous sense of urgency fall victim to a few old trappings.

Call of Duty 2 isn't the greatest shooter on the Xbox, but it is a great pickup for fans of the series and the WWII genre. The campaign lasts about 15-20 hours and he fun throughout. Even if that doesn't interest you, the multiplayer options will keep you coming back for more on PS2 and Xbox Live. There are many World War II shooters out there and Big Red One ranges near the top. If you are a fan of shooters, you should easily enjoy this one.

If the only platform you have is the GameCube then I highly recommend picking this game up, otherwise pick it up for the Xbox for multiplayer via Xbox Live or on the PS2 via the broadband network adapter and GameSpy's console matchmaking multiplayer service. In the end The Big Red One is the best shooter you can get for the GameCube this year.

This game has all the right boxes ticked and the new developers Treyarch have done a very impressive job in bringing this game to the PS2. If you liked the original then there's no reason not to pick up this sequel. If you didn't buy the original then rest assured that while this is numbered as a sequel it's a quite independent game. This is a fantastic action title which should be on your Christmas list.

While not perfect, Call of Duty 2: Big Red One is a worthy sequel for the first Call of Duty. Treyarch left some things out that I have seen in other games. But it's still got a hell of a story, looks great as most Activision and Treyarch games do, and it's fun online. I would put Call of Duty 2: Big Red One below Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood, but above Battlefield 2: Modern Combat. Maybe not the must have that the original was or the PC/Xbox 360 game is, but certainly worth a look.

Bringing a celebrated first person shooter for PC to consoles can prove succesful (Far Cry Instincts) or can turn into a major disappointment (Call of Duty: Finest Hour). After seeing its first attempt nailed down by the critics, Activision ordered a new team to establish a beachhead on console ground. Did this new attempt turn into a second Normandy or rather a second Pearl Harbour?

Call of Duty 2: Big Red One establishes the Call of Duty franchise as legitimate on the current generation of game consoles. With a fairly entertaining, though disappointingly short campaign, the game makes a great rental title to play to kill off a boring weekend afternoon. Should you purchase the title hoping for a great online title, you'll likely walk away disappointed. You'll most likely enjoy Big Red One more if you rent it. If you decide after then you enjoy the online multiplayer, then by all means, give it a purchase.

CoD2: BRO may not be as great an experience as its brothers in arms on the 360 and PC, but it certainly does well for itself on the PS2. The action is intense, the immersion is omnipresent and the aesthetic presentation is remarkable for the console. Linear gameplay and some occasional glitches hurt things a bit, but this is one of the better FPS games that you'll find for Sony's system. Don't let memories of Finest Hour leave a sour taste in your mouth for the series; this game is much, much better.

XboxXbox World Australia (XWA)
Call of Duty 2: Big Red One is a massive improvement on the lacklustre 'Finest Hour', and provides a solid, highly enjoyable singleplayer campaign. It's highly scripted and quite linear, yet this makes it an even more intense experience that does a pretty good job of conveying the highs and lows of war. Following in the real-life footsteps of America's Fighting First from Africa to Hitler's doorstep is a great touch, and the focus on historical battles and locations adds an air of authenticity to this otherwise Hollywood experience. If you're looking for a fun, accessible WW2 game to play on your own, or a bit of diversionary deathmatch on Xbox Live, then sign yourself up Call of Duty 2: Big Red One, soldier!

There are a number of WWII inspired games on the market and Call of Duty 2 puts the player right into the heart of the periods combat. There’s a lot to like about the game and not so much to dislike other than the graphics being a little simple and the game play being a pretty linear scripted experience. Call of Duty 2 on Xbox is a welcome addition to the first person shooters on offer and whilst it doesn’t do anything radically different from what we’ve seen before; remains an intense and exhilarating ride across Africa and Europe. The game is fun and well worth a play if you are into all things war.

All in all BRO is a great game. The sound and graphics alone make this title worth checking out; the only problem is that it does little to innovate. The whole game, while exceptionally well done, is just more of the same old WWII action that we have already seen a hundred times before. If the developers would have been able to come up with one great innovative game mode, or some unique feature of some kind, the game would be near the top of the FPS heap. As it stands, BRO is just another well-made WWII shooter that does nothing to stand out from the crowd.

In conclusion, if you,re looking for a great online shooter, well you,re just not going to get that here. If you,re looking for a little bit of a change in a WWII genre campaign, you may want to check out what Call of Duty 2: Big Red One has to offer. Most of the core game play elements are tight enough to fulfill you,re needs. So, I,m going to say that the $50 you,ll lay down for this title may not be all worth it, but it definitely deserves at least a rent.

Call of Duty 2: Big Red One isn't the first (and it certainly won't be the last) WWII first person shooter. It doesn't push the genre into new territory, but the single player campaign is a blast. Worth a rental for shooter fans, though hardcore WWII action buffs will find enough in the stock footage and developer interviews to warrant a purchase.

Overall, while the main thrust of Call of Duty 2: Big Red One is probably the most polished and enjoyable WWII experience on GameCube, its lack of replay value may still only warrant a rental.

In the future we'd love to see a greater emphasis on the personal interactions of soldiers. But given Call of Duty 2's abundance of such well-designed combat, we can't really complain about the omission of relatable people and genuine emotion, especially considering how many other acclaimed shooters make the same mistakes. Then again, the fact that there are an absurd amount of similarly themed titles available presents a bit of a problem and Call of Duty 2's subject matter might feel dry despite the consistently amazing action.

GameCube1UP
You don't have to already be a fan, though, to appreciate the game, and that's a big part of its appeal. It's pretty easy to jump in, grab a gun and start starring in your own WWII movie mowing down Nazis. By the time you've made it to the German border you'll have many memories of your heroic moments, but, more importantly, you'll remember your time fighting as a part of the Big Red One.

This is a fine swansong for a generation of consoles. It seems very doubtful that a better FPS will come out before they fade into obscurity. It's a fine, fine shooter, capturing a micro scale in a macro story, with a remarkable capacity for maintaining alert attention. It doesn’t do justice to its namesake’s remarkable emotional honesty, but it does more than enough to be worth your while checking out.

It's just not fair. Through no fault of its own Call of Duty 2: Big Red One is inevitably going to be compared to its namesake, Call of Duty 2, available on Xbox 360. But (unlike some early 360 games) that game isn't just a dressed-up version of this current generation one. No, it's next-generation from the ground up. Not exactly what you'd call an even match-up, but that just seems to have fueled the competitive fires. In some ways Big Red One even manages to out-Call of Duty the sequel proper before succumbing to its technical limitations.

Call of Duty 2 is one of the first multiplatform titles that has been developed for both current and next-generation systems (a little something called the Xbox 360). Although it may seem obvious on what Call of Duty version you should buy, the Xbox 360 game is actually a completely different title compared to the Xbox version (a brilliant idea by the developers to expand the game to the next-generation system without foregoing sales on current consoles).

The taste that is leftover from my experience with Call of Duty 2: The Big Red One is actually decent. Sure there is no online, multiplayer, and drawbacks on the graphics but that didn’t stop me from playing the campaign of The Big Red One. The campaign holds up the title for the short run you’ll play it for but once that run is over, you’ll wonder what left is there to do with a FPS with no multiplayer.

No matter how much fun the Call of Duty games are on PC – and now Xbox 360 – the series was horribly sullied by last year’s console effort, Call of Duty: Finest Hour. While there can be no doubting that the series has more than surpassed the ailing and gangrenous remains of the once respected Medal of Honor franchise, the first outing for the series on consoles was a bland and underdeveloped mess. It was plagued by muddy visuals, a below average multiplayer mode and badly designed, unmemorable levels built specifically to be as tired as possible… it was only just better than Medal of Honor: European Assault.

The total lack of soul in Big Red One, along with the irritating level design, are simply too much for the technical excellence embodied in its smooth framerate, and slick graphics to overcome. If an average, run-of-the-mill shooter can convince you to drop $50, then you won't be disappointed here. For FPS fans looking for something new and interesting, this would be a good title to skip.

If it had weighed in at half the price, Call of Duty 2: Big Red One would have been a lot easier to recommend, and far easier to forgive its short-comings. What's here is fun, but it just doesn't last long enough to justify full price, especially not $10 extra for the hand full of movies that make up the Special Edition, interesting as they are. As it is, it makes a decent hold over until CoD fans can get their hands on a Xbox360 (or a gaming PC) for the true sequel. Just don't expect a big bang out of Big Red One.

Overall, Call of Duty 2: Big Red One is a fun FPS that had a lot of potential. The diversity of missions provide a nice break from most embattled hiking trips that other shooters offer. Compared to the previous console installment of the Call of Duty series, it is definitely a large improvement, but it must improve dramatically to come even close to the quality of its bigger brothers on the PC or Xbox 360. The campaign was short, the turret and tank missions felt tacked on, there was no multiplayer mode, the save points were very sporadic, varying difficulty levels were present, and the A.I. was abhorrent. Otherwise, CoD2:BRO is an enjoyable killfest, if you want a very linear, playable movie.

Still, if all you have is a current generation machine (or your xbox 360 reservation is somewhere into 2006), Call of Duty 2: The Big Red One is still a very worthy pick. It has acceptable multiplayer options, presentation that will really draw you in, and surprising gameplay that shows that Treyarch is certainly up to task with a game such as this. This war is definitely worth experiencing, even if a certain retelling out there is a little more detailed. But, hey, the story still jars you, don't it?

In conclusion, this is a valued addition to the Call of Duty series and if you like war based games then this will not disappoint. Personally I would’ve liked some variation on the route and have control of what weapons and when to use them, but with all the different array of weaponry at your disposal it is a minor consequence.

Overall, Call of Duty 2: Big Red One is still a worthwhile first-person shooter. The game has made noticeable strides over the previous Call of Duty game on consoles with an interesting, but short, campaign. While the game has its moments, particularly with the turret shooting and vehicle portions, Big Red One still falls short of the standard the series set for itself on the PC because of pedestrian sound effects, poor AI, and a lack of intensity in the infantry combat.

Call of Duty: Big Red One is the perfect rental game; a bit too brief of a single-player experience to truly merit a purchase, but thoroughly enjoyable if you have an interest in WWII history, or are intrigued enough to check out another developer's take on the genre. The game is polished, and delivers a satisfying journey while it has you, but loses you with an all-too short experience. Perhaps it would have been a good idea to use some creative license and add a boss at the end, like Hitler's Brain? It's worked before.

Though Call of Duty 2: Big Red One shares its name with another game released on the PC--and soon to be released on the Xbox 360--you shouldn't confuse the two. Big Red One for the Xbox, PlayStation 2, and GameCube is an entirely different game from the PC and Xbox 360 versions. While it's a definite improvement on Activision's last Call of Duty game for consoles, Big Red One still doesn't do quite enough to distinguish itself from numerous other World War II first-person shooters.

As far as war games go, Call of Duty is one of the best-loved series by PC gamers and console gamers alike. However, just getting the experience of being down in the trenches as an Allied soldier sometimes isn't enough, so Activision recruited Treyarch and Grey Matter studios to tell the story of the First Infantry Division as they fought at the forefront of every major military action in the European Theater of World War II. This is the behind-the-scenes story of Call of Duty 2: Big Red One.

All in all, I found Call of Duty 2: Big Red One to be enjoyable in short spurts. If played for too long, I found the game to be rather tedious and repetitive, but in short busts (about one mission per seating, I would say) the game can provide fun.

When gazing out over the smoking, cratered expanse of World War II shooters, it takes a really special title to snare your interest. Call of Duty 2: Big Red One takes a fairly competent perspective on the genre, but, despite some stirring segments through Italy, these tattered soldiers could have used a little more time in training.

Perhaps the most irritating thing about World War II games is the fact that none of them are bad. If they were all terrible, people might stop buying them and publishers might find a new war to obsess over. Alas, there's always something to recommend in each one, and indeed that's the case with Call of Duty 2: Big Red One. This game's single-player campaign is a decent diversion and serves up a relatively well-produced version of the PC series.

Unfortunately, what it lacks in replay value and online play leads to a solider a bit too thin for his britches. Will this war never end?
