Black Ops is so good that it makes me want to lower the grades for other first-person shooters across the board.

I’m sure I’ll be playing this until the next installment of Modern Warfare 3 comes out and I’ll be interested to see what they can lift from this experience and what they can jettison. More work is needed on the campaigns of all Call of Duty titles but they’ve almost reached an apex in the multiplayer. Sooner or later, as with Halo or Gears of War, the entire structure of the franchise is going to become too familiar and will need to be shaken up somewhat but I still think Call of Duty has room for one more ‘traditional’ on the rails ride through the war-zones of the world.

Console shooter fans will no doubt flock to it in droves as it’s already breaking pre-order records, so you almost have to buy it if you regularly play online because it's the game most of your friends will no doubt be playing. The good news is that the game is absolutely worth the investment, and even if you find yourself disagreeing with some of the changes Treyarch instituted or you run into a bunch of morons who are hell bent on ruining a particular mode for you, you have plenty of other options to keep you engaged for a good long time.

Don’t let the Treyarch stamp get in the way of your decision to pick up Black Ops for the campaign. They’ve proved that they have a handle on how to make an outstanding Call of Duty singe-player experience, nearly outperforming the acclaimed works of Infinity Ward on almost every level. Add to that the insanely deep multiplayer portion and COD: Black Ops is one of the best games of 2010, especially from a value standpoint. There are few video games released this year that you simply cannot miss, Call of Duty: Black Ops is one of them.

Since I’m pretty sure I’ve exceeded my word count even before I broached the topic of single player (and I’m itching to hop back online with the game), I’ll leave you with this: Black Ops manages to achieve what I’ve been craving in CoD multiplayer since CoD4, down to the most finite details. Though I miss last year’s Spec Ops mode, there is so much in the single-player and delightful zombie slaughterfests to be had that it’s impossible to be bored or dissatisfied with the experience as a whole. Now, pardon me, I’m so close to unlocking the rainbow pony background for my emblem that I’ve been eyeing since day one, so I need to get back to merciless online destruction.

All in all, Call Of Duty: Black Ops is the best game in the franchise to date period. The team at Treyarch has taken the communities’ criticisms and addressed them in this game and I respect that. I have to say I was worried after the implosion of Infinity Ward, but now I am more than sure that at least Treyarch (still not sure about Sledgehammer) can continue to deliver high quality installments of the franchise, and it seems that getting out of the WW2 era has sparked their imaginations. Call Of Duty: Black Ops delivers two balanced and complete game modes as well as two pretty fun hidden game modes (I love Dead Ops Arcade).

There is so much content packed into this game that I couldn't even fit all of it into my review. However, even the multiplayer alone is enough to warrant this rating.

Though the series had already earned it, Black Ops justifies Call of Duty’s place on Halo’s Xbox-ruling tier. It stands with Reach as the gold standard by which all Xbox first-person shooters should be judged.

Call of Duty: Black Ops spends a little too much time in the bunker playing it safe, but it's a robust, quality product from top to bottom. The campaign is brief but memorable and the multiplayer has taken millions of hours of real-world testing to heart. The total amount of worthwhile content makes paying full price for most other games feel like a crime. Treyarch has closed the gap between its games and the Modern Warfare franchise with boundless customization, a keen sense of what makes the formula a success and listening to the fans. You won't regret answering the call once again.

As a product that will deliver countless hours of fun and engagement; that isn’t just a rehash of what we’ve been seeing the past few years, and offers a gripping and well-told story of a lost, or buried era in history, Call of Duty: Black Ops delivers, and delivers in solid measure. Does it suffer in parts? Yes, and we won’t know how fully until the game has been out for a while, but the sum of its parts make a great whole and in terms of investment, you’re definitely going to get a lot of life out of it. It’s Treyarch’s best work to-date, and possibly the most jam-packed competitive multiplayer offering on the market, with an awesome story thrown in for good measure. Very, very awesome.

It's admirable to see just how much stuff there is in Call of Duty: Black Ops. Despite the removal of campaign co-op or a mode comparable to MW2's Spec Ops mode, the sheer amount of content is almost staggering. In addition to the campaign, all the regular multiplayer modes, the Wager Match mode, the Theater, character and weapon customization, splitscreen multiplayer options, and Zombies, Treyarch even threw in a full working version of the original Zork. And if you have the hardware, you can play the whole game in 3D (not for me, as my glasses-wearing eyes end up producing a nasty headache after prolonged 3D). Call of Duty games are, as I mentioned, about moments, and there're a whole lot of moments, player and developer generated, in this game. It's easy to say that this is Treyarch's best game...when it's not just trying to imitate Infinity Ward.

MUST BUY!

Thanks to an excessively robust feature suite and developers not treating the console with kid gloves, you're not going to find a finer online multiplayer shooter on Wii than Call of Duty: Black Ops. Solo players looking for an action-packed romp with a strong story will have a grand ol' time digging in to the game's eight-ish hour campaign, and anyone in between will lose hours cracking zombies over the head. Black Ops on Wii may not be the best version of the game out there, but for the console it is unparalleled.

With World at War and Modern Warfare Reflex Edition both proving to be great successes on Wii, it is very pleasing indeed to see Activision Blizzard and Treyarch put so much commitment into making sure this year’s Nintendo home console edition is as close to its competitors as possible. The Wii edition of Call of Duty: Black Ops is by no means the inferior product many thought it would turn out to be.

Call of Duty: Black Ops is a remarkably fun and inventive shooter; sure it has its share of imperfections, but they're all minor when the game is this fun to play. Though the main campaign is a bit on the short side, it's filled with thrilling set pieces and a compelling narrative along with the always exciting multiplayer suite. Say goodbye to your wife and kids, kiss the sun goodbye - your new Call of Duty fix has arrived.

It's hard to argue with the millions of people who will buy and then play Call of Duty: Black Ops and say that this is a disappointing video game. The reality is that it's not as long as the gamer is willing to accept the limitations that are associated with the franchise. The presentation is wonderful, the custscenes are engaging and informative, the story is very thriller like, the shooting is monotone but still engaging, the visuals good. But there's so much more potential in Call of Duty: Black Ops that goes unrealized. An extra path that leads to the conclusion of each level would have made this game so much better. More difference when it comes to the weaponry a player can use would have introduced some much needed tactical thinking and variation. Longer levels, with some boring bits like working the controls of a plane or listening to banter between other soldiers, might have added to the depth of the experience.

This is easily the best game of the year, thus far. The single player campaign, while maybe not as polished as in Modern Warfare 2, is still better than almost any other game on the market. As for the multiplayer, it’s more or less perfect and will surely dethrone Modern Warfare 2 as the king of online shooters. You can’t go wrong with Call of Duty: Black Ops, that’s the bottom line. It’s an incredible package and it is most definitely worth the $60.

Treyarch isn't trying to reinvent the formula which made Modern Warfare 2 the most successful video game of all time, but it has laid down solid multiplayer foundations while adding a series of necessary and intelligent tweaks - which should be music to the ears of the game's many fans. A spectacular but silly single-player campaign rounds off the package, and while it comes without Modern Warfare 2's ambitious (but unsuccessful) attempt at carving out a political message, Black Ops offers its own thoroughly enjoyable romp through some entertaining set-pieces. I've considered myself a Call of Duty fan for many years, and I've held a deep-seated distrust of Treyarch since Call of Duty 3. No longer.

While it holds more first week sales than any other game before it, Black Ops isn't the series' high point. What we have here is a refined and extremely confident product from a studio that has found its feet in the FPS world. This sequel captures everything that makes the series great, and apart from the odd mishap, is engrossing throughout. If the short campaign doesn't hold your attention past the credits, the online multiplayer almost certainly will. Right now, we're intrigued to see what's coming next, especially as the Call of Duty series heads into a period of major transition.

With solid single player and multiplayer components, Call of Duty: Black Ops is easily the best game that Treyarch has ever produced. Given the pedigree of this franchise and how well received it has been over the many iterations that we’ve been able to experience, I feel completely comfortable saying that Black Ops is one of the best entries the series has seen. It is in every way as competent and engrossing as any of the Infinity Ward offerings. Treyarch’s success largely stems from deviating not only from their own past iterations, but also daring to try new things with an established franchise that until this point many haven’t considered their own. While their attempts to add such hyper-realistic violence to the series was misguided, nearly every other design decision, from the narrative devices employed to the pace of the gameplay, were successful. With this entry, Treyarch is no longer a company following the leader, but a well-deserved leader in their own right.

The weak and twitchy single-player - with many of the same old flaws - almost undermines all of the superb extra features and pretty much flawless multiplayer offering. Veterans and regular players still have the advantage over newcomers, but with Combat Training and the Zombie mode, there is plenty of fun to be had for even the most inexperienced players. Black Ops isn’t perfect, but it’s certainly getting there.

But in the end, the product perseveres on the strength of its "oomph" alone and in short, it’s not everything it could’ve been but nevertheless, the entire experience is one well worth your time.

All in all there's little new under the sun. When you evaluate Black Ops in the genre of FPS games as well as when you put it in the Call of Duty series we only get to see polishing of the linear gameplay of the campaign and more production added than ever before. That results in a story that constantly blows you away and that you'll love to finish and maybe even play again, but makes only an average impression when it comes to gameplay. The very decent multiplayer is still very tight thanks to the experience sysetm and the excellent basic mechanics but also here the innovation is found mostly in the margin.

I did my best to look at Black Ops from a perspective unfamiliar with the 360 and PS3 versions of the game, but it is difficult. It doesn’t look nearly as good as it’s next generation brothers, but other than the visuals, very little has been lost in the translation to the Wii. Every mode exists, every level exists, and most importantly, it all just feels like a Call of Duty game. It’s not the best version of Black Ops, but Wii owners should know that they have not been forgotten in any way. Their Call of Duty experience is just as good as any other, except when it comes to the way it looks. That part of the game could really use some work.

Black Ops' single-player, while not the best, is different. Treyarch has pushed the multiplayer as far as it could go. True, you've played it all before, and that kind of familiarity keeps Black Ops from being a game that truly represents the absolute pinnacles of 2010, but never has the multiplayer been this good. Now, it's time for something dramatically different. Annualized sequels will only work so well for so long, but in the now, Call of Duty: Black Ops keeps the series worth playing for another year.

Call of Duty Black Ops both improves and fails over last year’s Modern Warfare 2. The story is just a bit too bland and run of the mill, we’ve seen it all before, albeit it looks even more glorious. The online modes though show this to invest in the game, with numerous improvements and new modes to keep you hooked until next year’s inevitable release.

Adding everything up, Black Ops has to be taken with a pinch of salt, as a list of improvements on Modern Warfare 2’s hit skeleton: lean, dedicated servers (but only for rent), as well as everything we bullied the last Call of Duty for, along with a campaign that can basically be described as a tram ride and a level of optimization that made our editor-in-chief wonder why he handed me the game without a solid upgrade coupon in the first place.

Call of Duty: Black Ops is a great overall package that has a ton of content to enjoy. The multiplayer modes are largely based on what was established by Modern Warfare, but the twists that Treyarch throws in work well. My biggest issue with the multiplayer is that the new Wager Matches, while fun in their own right, don't compare favorably to the high-quality and addictive leveling system and game modes from Modern Warfare 1 and 2. Single-player is as exhaustingly fast-paced as ever with large set pieces that try to take the attention off of the lackluster AI of both friends and enemies. That withstanding, the story is the best I've ever seen from a Call of Duty game. Couple both of those substantial offerings with more Zombie content than some full-fledged zombie games and Black Ops is certainly worth your time, even if you aren't already a fan of the series.

While Call of Duty: Black Ops isn't without flaws it does still maintain that core Call of Duty goodness that we've all come to love from the game. You get intense war situations mixed with fantastic visuals and presentation. Outside of the single-player story, and much like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the real selling point to this game will be its diverse and deep multiplayer experience. With new options and an overhauled way of customizing your experience, you will be glued to the multiplayer like a C4 bomb to a wall.

Bottom line -- if you prefer playing First-person Shooters with pointer controls, and you don't have a hang up about playing games that look they could run on the PS2, then this Wii port is the way to go. This is definitely not the version of the game that most pre-existing CoD fans want, but for those that are looking for a slightly cheaper starting point to the series, or if you just don't like playing FPS's with dual analog sticks, then this is the version of Black Ops that I would recommend.

Overall, Black Ops on the Wii is a great alternative to those that don't own the high end console version. Don’t even think about buying the game until you’ve made sure that your Mac meets the game’s rather idiosyncratic system requirements. Ultimately, there is little doubt that Black Ops will sate the hunger of those simply wanting more Call of Duty, but beyond that it seem unlikely that it will broaden the palettes of gamers or indeed the genre; and for such a big budget, high profile release, we can’t help but feel a little disappointed with that.

In the current climate and development cycle Treyarch were never going to play Russian roulette with such a valuable franchise and, as such, Black Ops isn’t so much a statement of intent as a message of reassurance. Perhaps the best and worst thing that can be said for it is that you’d never know Black Ops wasn’t an Infinity Ward game, but even statements like this are basically an irrelevance because the only thing that matters here is the final score.

If you’re buying Black Ops with no intention of dipping into its online offerings, the short duration of its undeniably entertaining campaign means you should probably knock a point off the number stationed at the end of this review, while if you adore Call of Duty’s multiplayer you can definitely add one…

By no means is CoD: Black Ops the FPS of the year that it has been crowned, or even anything more than a good FPS. Treyarch did a nice job with the campaign to make it more than most FPS titles give us, and the changes made to the multiplayer were definitely for the better. But the game itself is nothing we haven’t seen before, and the multiplayer is severely flawed–whether it be by Treyarch’s hand or by the absurd amount of glitchers out there. So if you haven’t picked this up yet, you’re not missing much. Save your holiday gift cards for some upcoming releases. I’m not saying Black Ops is a title to stay away from, but by no means did it even come close to the hype.

While Black Ops plays great on consoles and will undoubtedly be a huge seller, there is still some doubt cast over the future of the franchise when we know next year's iteration won't be made by the same Infinity Ward that has delivered in the past. Over the years, they were slowly improving the formula, and I fully expected them - before the implosion of the studio - to make sure to address Modern Warfare 2's campaign issues and multiplayer exploits when making their next game. This year, Treyarch has done a good job making a fun campaign and some really interesting multiplayer, but some of the old problems with the franchise are creeping back in.

This year, Treyarch has done a good job making a fun campaign and some really interesting multiplayer, but some of the old problems with the franchise are creeping back in. And on PC, Black Ops is nearly unplayable for many gamers, and the best we can do is wait for a patch to deliver the smooth, responsive FPS action we've had since the first Call of Duty was released over six years ago. Black Ops does well, mostly due to the sheer amount of exciting and fun multiplayer content, but I've got some serious concerns over where Call of Duty is headed.

Call of Duty has long since settled into an enormously successful rhythm, and the good news for Activision is that Black Ops does little to disrupt it. The campaign is relentlessly aggressive and spectacular – a Jerry Bruckheimer tribute act stuck in permanent encore – while the multiplayer modes are a mixture of smart tweaks to working formulas, as focused on protecting that guaranteed bottom line as the campaign's yellow objective cursor is on making sure you never falter. The results are never less than entertaining whatever you choose to do, then, but not exactly brave and bold either. Say what you like about No Russian - at least it was something different.

Black Ops is a terrific action game with a solid story and a deep, rewarding multiplayer mode. Sure, when placed up against the other games in the series, players may feel forced to pick favorites -- they may be disappointed that their favorite playlist is gone, deathstreaks are out, or that the Nuke killstreak has been removed (though the Attack Dogs killstreak in its place is really darn funny, and has the benefit of not completely ending the match early). They may challenge each other to figure out which they liked best, or compare sales figures like a high scores on an old arcade machine. But in the end, who cares? We may all be competitive, but when games of the caliber of Call of Duty: Black Ops continue to be released, nobody has to lose.

The PC version has become somewhat stable, but it's hard to tell how well it will perform for any given setup. If you really must play Black Ops on the PC, you'll have to just dive in and pray. Call of Duty is the Goliath of the video game world. The series has sold millions of copies and catapulted itself from a solid, World War II shooter to the sprawling multiplayer playground and Hollywood-style campaign that we know today. Call of Duty: Black Ops takes everything that made the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions great, but retrofits the mechanics for Nintendo's system. It's mostly successful in what it attempts, but it's clear that the limitations of the system played a role in this title's shortcomings.

Call of Duty: Black Ops on Wii features an amazing amount of high-octane action and content. The online multiplayer carries the game with its addictive leveling aspects and competitive and fun game modes. The campaign delivers a fantastic story setup — as well as amazing set pieces — but fumbles a bit too much. The visuals, while good in places, are just not consistent enough throughout the package and make one curious about the possibilities of a Call of Duty game exclusive for Wii (or created visually specific for the system).

Sadly, in it's current form, there are simply too many issues to recommend Black Ops as a viable new platform for those who have heavily invested in other franchises lately. We're taking the liberty of assuming Treyarch can get a handle on the problems with a patch, but until that time, be warned.

I can't deny that I'm having fun with the game, even after I finish this review. I'll be playing the multiplayer for months to come, and I'm sure quite a few folks will as well. I'm a little burned out on the single player experience though, and while I feel like it's a decent enough romp for a FPS title, the storyline did little to grab my attention, and the whole Call of Duty formula is starting to feel a little tired at this point. I'd still suggest checking it out if you've been enjoying the series up to this point, there's little that's changed that'll make you upset or disappointed. That said, don't go into this expecting huge strides or major improvements to be made, just expect to have a few new fun maps to play and the addition of another zombie mode to check out.

In all, Treyarch has finally stepped out of Infinity Ward's shadow to say "Hey, we're here too!". But while the team's heart might be in the right place, it's too early to call Black Ops an unreserved success. Yes, it will sell like crazy this holiday season, and it's certainly not bad, but I find the game's potential to ultimately be more exciting than the game itself. And who knows, maybe in the next go around Treyarch will outdo themselves and turn in the Call of Duty game that this one suggests they could.

In closing, Call of Duty: Black Ops can't be recommended for its story; the multiplayer offerings are on par with what you would expect from a Call of Duty title and in certain ways, pushes the bar. The campaign aside, there is plenty available in Black Ops to make your overall experience enjoyable no matter what you decide to go with, be it leveling up via multiplayer or a co-op game of Dead Ops.

Black Ops is an excellent entry into the series, even if it is fairly inconsequential. It doesn’t add anything radical, but like the past few Call of Duty games, it adds enough small things to make it different enough to call a sequel. Thankfully, these changes are mostly interface-based. Dedicated servers are back! The customization is better! You can do a stupid dive move! There isn’t anything mind-boggling here, but it’s just as addictive as Call of Duty has ever been. If you haven’t been burned out on the series by now, Black Ops will still be a great deal of fun, and if you’ve given up on Call of Duty’s PC versions, it might just coax you back.

The gameplay is similar to that of the previous series, some new features such as making your own player insignia’s, purchasing your weapons, attachments, and contracts for achievements have added a little bit of excitement to the game, but overall I felt its just a re-skin of an old game, hopefully with map making mods and tools this one might be able to keep players interested longer, and you won’t just see the diehard soldiers on the battlefield.

Call of Duty: Black Ops is exactly what everyone expected it to be—Modern Warfare 2.5. Actually, let’s call it Modern Warfare 2: Vietnam, to reflect the new setting. This is what the previous owners want and love, so those of you who love it probably already own the game and are fragging every night. For those of you who avoided the craze and didn’t like it to begin with, stay far away. So long as this game keeps selling 10 million copies, the formula isn’t going to change much, as Black Ops proves.

It’s impressive how much content Treyarch managed to cram onto this Wii disc, but it’s by no means the way to experience Black Ops. The campaign is well-paced, and the multiplayer is packed with features that can keep you coming back if you can get over the less-precise controls. If you have a choice, however, this version is not the one to play.

While Treyarch has essentially reduced Black Ops to fit on the Wii, it's impossible to engage with the game when so much of what's been lost is absolutely crucial to the experience.

Playing Call of Duty Black Ops is an exercise in futility and frustration punctuated by brief moments of genuine fun. I can't recommend the game to anyone who doesn't hate themselves and want to inflict pain on their own psyche.

Trying to put "yeah, it's OK" into a full article is harder than one might think. Games that stir strong feelings are much easier to write about, simply because I'll have a ready supply of superlatives to churn out into paragraphs. In this case, there's really not much else to say here—the FPS is a somewhat stagnant genre nowadays, and Black Ops is Exhibit A as to why. There's no real creative risk being taken, and while that might be just fine for sales figures, it doesn't bode well for Call of Duty: Black Ops' ability to stand out artistically in the immensely flooded FPS market.

I honestly, truly wish I could say more in Black Ops' favor. This is the first Call of Duty in which Treyarch has stepped out of the shadow of Infinity Ward, but the triumph has been ruined by an unbearable PC port, and this is coming from a game that had promised to do much more for PC gamers than Modern Warfare 2 did. The truly stunning single-player campaign offsets many of the multiplayer's flaws, and the Zombie mode is tons of hilarious fun, but neither manages to be lengthy or deep enough to make Black Ops the truly great game that I know it should be. This is an incredibly well-made game that, once patched, will easily sit among the hottest titles of the year. Once the multiplayer is fixed, feel free to pop at least two more points, most likely even three, into this review's score. I can only review what I've got in front of me, however, and what I've got is a superb game that has pissed all over itself.

Call of Duty: Black Ops does many things right on the PC such as dedicated servers and high resolutions, but it's just really buggy. I shouldn't be experiencing lag or performance issues with the computer I have, but it's there. Let's hope Treyarch fixes them up quick. If they do so, the PC version does warrant a higher grade, but right now I can't give it a better grade for the product that's delivered to me.

Call of Duty Black Ops is a disappointment on Wii, but not for most of the reasons you're thinking. Yes, it has the typical inferior graphics, glitches and framerate issues, but the core gameplay is as solid as on the other consoles. Rather, the problem is that it's the same old Call of Duty--no innovation, no gameplay improvements, just a slightly better story and a few multiplayer additions. Unless you're desperate for CoD and only own a Wii, pass on Black Ops or get it for a different console. Discerning Wii owners looking for a good FPS should get GoldenEye, and start saving for Conduit 2.
