The only other real disappointments are the lack of animation in your units and the unremarkable sound effects, which vary from merely tacky to pretty damn poor. Apart from these niggles though, the game is little short of a masterpiece, taking classic Civilization gameplay and adding even more depth and variety to it. Improved menus and controls make it rather less intimidating, and the open-ended nature of the game and the massive range of units, buildings, technologies and strategies on offer means this is one game that you can play time and time again without ever repeating yourself. Highly recommended for casual gamers and hardened Civilization addicts alike.

Jogar Call to Power 2 é, inegavelmente, um prazer.

And here we are at the end of our program and my summation is in order. Call to Power II is a fun game. If you enjoyed the first Call to Power, or any of the Civ titles, you'll feel right at home and appreciate the refinements incorporated into Call to Power. However, if you are a die-hard RTS player you're going to be seriously jonseing for some instant gratification. The game is deep, involved and long. How anyone can consider playing in a multiplayer is beyond me.

All right... let's get one thing straight. Call to Power 2 is not going to win any special awards for innovation. It's really nothing more than a spruced-up version of the Sid Meier's Civilization - a game that many (myself included) consider the finest computer game of all time. So, if lack of creativity bothers you, than you'll want to stay far away from CTP2. However, if it's deep game play and plain ol' FUN you're looking for in your computer entertainment than look no further - CTP2 is one of the finest turn-based strategy games on the market, and packs more bang for your gaming buck than you can probably handle. Get that coffee ready and prepare to be late for work, because Civilization (although due to legal reasons it's not called that any longer) is back and better than ever.

The Next Level
Call to Power II was what the original Call to Power was meant to be. The sequel still has several flaws, but its gameplay value makes up for most, if not all, of them. Call to Power II made up for the failure of its predecessor and runs second only to the critically acclaimed and innovative Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. Call to Power II is an excellent choice for die-hard fans of the Civilization iseries and is definitely worth a try for fans of turn-based strategy games. Though it can't compare to Alpha Centauri, it's still number two and ain't bad.

Gleich vorweg: Call to Power 2 macht richtig Spaß.

A good turn based game based upon a classic that doesn't innovate enough to ever be considered a new classic. Still, it's worth playing while we wait for Civilization III.

Therefore, CTP2 is a good Civ game, not revolutionary but more evolutionary, although even at that it seems to pale against the more refined Alpha Centauri. CTP2 has its charms and if Alpha Centauri alienated you, CTP2 is worthy of any Civ gamer' s time. It doesn't capitalize on the uniqueness of its franchise and ultimately, the ugly parts of it rear its head usually after AD 1700. All in all, Activision's progress from the original Call to Power to CTP2 is promising. It will definitely be interesting to see how this franchise will stack up to the official sequel, Civilization III. Hopefully CTP3 will prove the old adage that the third time's the charm.

Despite the lack of serious improvement over previous iterations in the series, for the money you pay it is truly a game worth buying. It doesn’t make any effort to transcend the genre, but still keeps the player interested. By using an old formula with a few goodies thrown in it makes for countless hours of mad tinkering, especially with the editor. At the same time, if 40 bucks seems a bit much to pay for mostly cosmetic changes, check your local bargain bin for the original CTP. Its largely the same game, and better looking to boot - you’ll only be missing the new editor. Call to Power 2 should have been an expansion for CTP, not a sequel. There was no reason to fix something that wasn’t broken, and it looks as though Activision tried to do just that.

If you have never played any Civilization game before, I could heartily recommend Call to Power II. It is definitely the best version of a Civilization game I’ve ever played, with better graphics, better trade and diplomacy screens, and more units, buildings, and wonders. If you have played any of the others, then you better be a hardcore fan to appreciate the essentially unchanged gameplay, with just a squinch of anything new and different. I’m apparently not a big enough fan so I'm giving it 73.

If you liked the first part, you'll love Call to Power 2. Some might object that the game suffered only minor changes, and they would be right. This sequel doesn't bring anything revolutionary, but it certainly leaves an impression of a completed project. I believe that the authors meant to make the first part look like this. If Call to Power 2 had appeared earlier, it might have left some marks on the gaming industry; this way, it's just something to play until the official Civilization 3 appears.

GameSpot
The original Civilization: Call to Power was supposed to be a sort of sequel to Sid Meier's Civilization II - even though its game system was clearly based on Sid Meier's legendary design, it tried to extend and improve the basic concepts. Unfortunately, it wasn't particularly successful. Eighteen months later, Activision has taken another crack at reinterpreting the classic empire-building game. The result is stripped of the Civilization name (for licensing reasons, since Hasbro actually owns the name) and simply titled Call to Power II, and it's an improved - if still flawed - computer game.

Adrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
Call to Power II is everything that the original should have been. It has an intuitive interface and eliminates the time-consuming micromanagement within each city that made every other game in the series so drawn out (though some players might not consider this a good thing). In general, Call to Power II is a solid outing that only suffers from the design philosophy of copying a successful formula. It isn’t groundbreaking by any means, instead providing a very solid strategy game that will appeal widely to fans of the series or genre. Until we find that next title that will revolutionize and blow everything else clear out of the ocean, Call to Power II is about the best strategy title currently out on the market. If you enjoyed Civilization 2 or Alpha Centauri, your collection of Sid Meier-style games won’t be complete without this one on the shelf.

I didn't catch all the bug problems that Kristian was having, but CtP2 just doesn't feel all that different from the last two Civs that I've played. Good if you're a fanatic...I guess.

Some background: I love turn-based strategy games. I own every Civilization title from Civilization II onwards. This includes Test of Time, and Call to Power. I also own Alpha Centauri, which I consider to be part of the series. So, naturally, I got my grubby paws on a copy of Call to Power II. This review was originally written before Christmas, but I ran into a bug (see Gameplay), and it took Activision quite a while to get back to me. They did eventually give me a solution, so I rewrote my review, much of which compares and contrasts the title with other games in the genre.

The lesson of CALL TO POWER is that when you sell a quarter of a million units, there’s no real pressure to do anything differently. Hence CALL TO POWER 2. On the whole, I’d rather be on ALPHA CENTAURI or back in CIVILIZATION as I knew it.

I played CtP extensively. I knew there were movement bugs, I knew there were graphical problems. In the back of my mind, I thought they'd get it right the next time. And I don't want to hear about patches. You can take patches and shove them up your ass. Patches are for companies that should have gotten it right the first time. This is a basically good game that is swimming in bugs. There's nothing extraordinarily different from the first CtP aside from an interface facelift and a few new units. You're better off playing something that's finished.

Strategy Informer
The bottom line is that the game isn't a bit challenging, and it doesn't make any sense to play an empire game in an environment where you won't have any real competition. If you wont to play a civ empire game buy "Alpha Centauri".

Call to Power II is a true empire builder: over thousands of years, you gradually explore, expand, exploit, and exterminate your way to glory. The game is an interesting but frustrating blend of different short- and long-term objectives, where your final goal is your decision. Will you annihilate enemy civilizations in combat? Will you forge a lasting world peace? Will you be the first civilization to build great wonders of the world like the Gaia Controller, the culmination of all human arts and sciences? This open-endedness and lack of focus is Call to Power II's strength and weakness.
