Get ready for a close encounter of the friendly kind with Casper: Spirit Dimensions, a ghastly adventure for the Nintendo GameCube, featuring 360-degree full-flight movement.
Evil Doesn't Have a Ghost of a Chance
The spirit world has been torn asunder thanks to Kibosh, a no-good phantom who's as vicious as Casper is cute. This evil specter has already possessed ghosts across four different dimensions and won't stop until he controls the world of both the living and the dead. Casper may be a small ghost, but what he lacks in size, he makes up for with determination and a cool arsenal of magic powers.
When the game begins, you will meet Wendy, a young witch who fills you in on Kibosh's evil scheme and gives you a rundown of Casper's special abilities. Being a ghost, he can fly up, down and all around in order to search every nook and cranny of the 16 levels for helpful power-ups and items. His spirit abilities allow him to fly through certain walls and soar at lightning speed.
Casper can shoot spirit blasts at enemies using special ammo available as power-ups. Ice freezes your enemies in their tracks, homing-ammo will make it easier to aim, and fire toasts bad guys to a crisp. There are also health power-ups.
Crazy characters you meet during your quest will often send you hunting for lost items. As you explore the maze-like levels you will need advice from these characters to discover the solutions to tricky puzzles. Keys will also be quite helpful when you are trying to reach new areas.
Graphics
The detailed spirit-world levels shine with decent lighting effects. The medieval level is filled with stone castles, dungeons and gargoyles that are just waiting to attack. There is also an amusement park level featuring Krank the Klown, because we all know that clowns are scary. Rounding out the list is Kibosh's Factory and the Spirit World, home of a ghost pirate ship.
Thanks to nice transparency effects you can see right through the ghosts, including Casper. Spooky! Animation is pretty simple, but Casper soars smoothly throughout the levels. The nicely orchestrated music captures the mood perfectly and Casper talks to you -- er, himself --throughout the journey.
Casper has been charming audiences since his debut in a theatrical short in 1945.
Casper: Spirit Dimensions manages to scare up fun on the Nintendo GameCube, especially for younger gamers. Exploring the levels using 360-degree full-flight movement is a blast, but a lack of visual cues makes it difficult to solve some of the puzzles.
Casper: Spirit Dimensions has a manufacturer's suggested retail price is $29.99. The game has been rated "E" (Everyone) by the independent Entertainment Software Rating Board. Progress is saved to a Memory Card (not included).
