It's a great game separate from the franchise, and definitely does a favor for the third person action genre, but with the CV characters and license attached, it becomes even more enjoyable for me. Definitely worth a second playthrough after you're finished as well, and that's something I'm looking forward to doing soon myself. Absolutely worth picking up for both the long running Castlevania fanboy and the newcomer, I don't think you'll be disappointed with this action game in the least bit.

Konami and MercurySteam have taken all the risks inherent in a big-budget series reboot and met them head-on with a nearly perfect game. From the intense and addictive combat, to the exciting platforming, to the mind-stretching puzzles, it’s a masterpiece from beginning to end.

Lords of Shadow combines amazing story, gameplay and audiovisual for an experience that is capable of leaving its mark on your very being. While it is perhaps not what many fans will expect from a Castlevania title, it is by far the best 3D Castlevania ever made and an extremely capable game in its own right. Superb.

This is our favorite entry in the series since Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, where the Castlevania bug first bit us. In this case, Lords of Shadow is right in line with a spate of awesome action titles that have graced consoles, but ongoing expansion of the series' 2D roots shows that Konami doesn't feel like limiting its options. We love having the choice to play both styles, and we couldn't have imagined a better way for Castlevania to finally get the 3D version it so deserves. Highly recommended for bloodthirsty action fans.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow breaks this curse completely by excelling in nearly every way a game can be measured. The excellent voice acting, the suitably grand score, the gorgeously crafted vistas, the compelling plot; everything just clicks when it comes to this game. Without the Castlevania characters and settings this game would have been excellent, but with all those things included, this title becomes magnificent. Action/adventure players will greatly enjoy what this game has to offer and fans of the Castlevania series will be thrilled with the positive direction the series has taken.

When it’s all said and done, Castlevania is one that will go down as one of the better Castlevania games. The epic scale of the story, combat, and overall presentation really make this game a must own for both Castlevania fans as well as action game fans. It really is more than just another 3D action game. There is player strategy involved when it comes to the combat, skillful puzzle solving, and of course, the epic boss fights. The story does take a couple of hours to ramp up, but when it does, you will be hooked. The gameplay is so fluid that a lot of action games in the same genre should take some pointers from Lords of Shadow. It’s just so fun to break off a 20 hit combo on a small group of vampires. The small hindrances are there, but never really take you out of the overall experience, and with a gameplay time of almost 15 hours, there’s a lot to be experienced. If you didn’t like the past 3D Castlevania games, don’t let this one drive you away. It’s definitely one for the books.

Calling CLOS a surprise hit might be a little unfair, as the game looked impressive throughout development, but it's fair to say that I simply didn't expect to enjoy it this much. With a combat system that cleverly overcomes button mashing, wonderful design work and a story that spans far longer than your average video game, Lords of Shadow is exactly what the Castlevania franchise needed to find popularity with a new generation of gamers - and us oldies too.

While the game does suffer from some technical issues (including a somewhat sporadic framerate, a few frustrating but skippable puzzles, and a massive length that drags out just slightly over the limit), the amount of carefully crafted aesthetics and polished gameplay far outweigh the few negatives found in Lords of Shadow. Simply put, this is one of the best titles of the year, and marks not only a proper return of the Castlevania series for consoles, but a starting point that future games would do well to follow.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadows is a fantastically-crafted game. In some ways, it seems like Castlevania in name only because it is stitched together with many existing gameplay mechanics, but it sticks close enough to the action-packed cloth the series is woven from to seem worthy of the name. In the end, it winds up being an amazing, memorable experience, even if it is lacking in innovation. Long-time series and action game fans should definitely pick it up. Players with both systems might be wondering which version to buy, and while both versions of the game are fantastic, I’d give a very slight edge to the PS3 version since the Dual Shock 3 is a little more comfortable to use than the 360 pad for it.

Lords Of Shadow is the revitalization Castlevania needed and deserved. Cynics may harp on about it being a clone of many of the games mentioned throughout this review, but when it takes elements from each of these and pulls them together in one seamless, grand adventure...well, it doesn't really matter. Let's hope a sequel is in the works.

In the end, Castlevania Lords of Shadow may not be your original Castlevania game which your "granddad" played but if you're a fan of games such as God of War or Bayonetta, than this game will be as equally as enjoyable. A great story, sturdy gameplay, the only problem with the game is the limited freedom and considering how beautiful the gaming environments are, this is a shame. Nonetheless, what a game people... what a game!

Although the puzzles are simplistic, and occasionally frustrating, they won't stop the hardened Castlevania fan. The impressive vistas, detailed cutscenes and huge bosses will keep players hooked. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow does what it set out to do: reboot an aging franchise with a fresh look and style.

For a small team Castlevania stands as high as any game in its genre, even though the game has sourced some of it’s gameplay elements from others, it still has a distinct and powerful touch to it. There isn’t much that is new in the game and nothing is innovative, but that doesn’t really matter as it stands. The way in which each section has been integrated reinvents the concept and keeps it fresh. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is plentiful in its redesign of concepts that have been around for years, but the most impressive thing about the title is that it has come from behind and come to the point of being among of the stand-out titles of the year.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is a fantastic journey that you'll be exploring for weeks on end. With tens of hours of content and challenges to overcome, this may well be the epic saga you've been waiting for. If only the experience was slightly condensed down and given just that little bit more focus, we'd be recommending it outright.

Lords of Shadow won’t replace Symphony of the Night as the best game in the series, but it doesn’t need to. The game holds its own and offers a great experience to fans of the series and fans of action games. It delivers a solid story, and gives a simple combat system that offers some depth for people that want to master it. Lords of Shadow is definitely the best 3D Castlevania so far, and one of the better action titles this year.

All in all, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is a really good game. Only because the hype and anticipation was so high might the score be considered a cause for concern. Still, I had hoped for a game that flirted with a 9 in my eyes and in the end, I just don’t like it very much. But it’s absolutely worth a try, at the very least.

Overall, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow remains a stunning and frankly surprising accomplishment, overcoming years of middling 3D series entries and dissolved expectations to deliver a fresh and largely memorable action game -- and one that will appeal not only to franchise gurus, but anyone seeking an exciting and fulfilling modern adventure.

There’s nothing that Lords of Shadow does that feels all that new or fresh, but what it does offer in terms of recognisable gameplay elements and features are implemented quite well with the focus here placed squarely on being a large scale epic. Not only in terms of story but in giant boss battles that feel like you’re fighting a sentient skyscraper and large castles to explore that feel like they were built for creatures that even giants would consider, well, giant. The musical cues are also quite grand in their introduction during cut-scenes and bombastic during hectic battles, and the voice work by a few seasoned actors, like the aforementioned Patrick Stewart and the somewhat underused Robert Carlyle, is also quite good. So for anyone looking for a solid action game that foregoes the exploration and depth of the recent handheld Castlevania titles, Lords of Shadow comes highly recommended.

Despite the linearity of its design, camera quirks and small issues of pacing, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is a resounding success for MercurySteam. No game juxtaposes so many stunning, grand moments as it does with as many smaller quiet touches, such as Gabriel crossing himself at the sides of his fallen comrades. It is a dark, somber game and a promising new beginning for the Castlevania legacy.

Xbox 360GameSpot
The combat is great and the boss battles are quite memorable, but it degenerates when those core ideas clash--when Castlevania ignores what it does so well (action) for the sake of creating a more diverse experience. The problem is that diversity ultimately adds nothing notable except for shallow adventure elements and frustration. It's a good start for a series in need of some new blood--so to speak--it's just unfortunate so much of it comes from other games and not an original source.

PlayStation 31UP
Lords of Shadow suffers from some pretty big problems and oversights, but it treats so many things briefly and flies through levels in such rapid succession, that even those flaws never hold the game down for long. Altogether, the game spins an interesting tale, and though it might borrow some ideas a little heavily from certain other games, it implements them well. This won't replace Symphony of the Night as the oft-argued greatest Castlevania, but it should finally at least put to rest complaints that there are no good 3D Castlevania games. If Lords of Shadow sees a sequel, there are lots of important, obvious improvements that need to be made, but Mercury Steam proves that they're at least on the right track.

I recommend Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, but not if your expectation is something similar to the classic Castlevania games. Pretty much anything you would expect to find in a Castlevania game is not to be found here. But fans of combat-heavy action adventure games will have fun if they can excuse a lot of mindless button mashing and a couple technical issues. The developers have successfully adopted ideas from several popular games (God of War, Shadow of the Colossus, Uncharted, Resident Evil) but that also means this isn't a very original effort. In the end, I'd rather play a more traditional 2D Castlevania game, but there is no denying that this is a beautiful and enjoyable change of pace

Xbox 360Brash Games
Given this, it’s an enjoyable romp through a world that the developers haven’t had to think about too much. It’s all there in the series: long, whip-style weapon, vampires, werewolves, zombies etc… so the result is a very fashionable game complete with all the little accessories you’d want, with only a few medium sized niggles. It won’t stand the test of time, like many other Castlevania titles, but it’ll keep you entertained for long enough to genuinely enjoy it.

PlayStation 3Random Access
Enthusiasts of games such as Assassin's Creed and God of War will probably eat this up while fans of Castlevania's lengthy and relatively simple 2D platforming history will need some significant extra time to adjust and reach a desired comfort level with Lords of Shadow. I fell more to the latter; I needed time to see all of the intricate pieces of this puzzle fall into place before I could enjoy it. Before that point, the game is a beast, but once everything "clicks", the experience becomes a wonder. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is far from perfect, but you are at least guaranteed an exhilarating ride.

I'm sorry, but I've played Lords of Shadow long enough to know one thing, and that's that I'm not coming back. Hell, I don't even want to be here now.
