Gamers expecting a game in the same vein as Secret of Mana or Sword of Mana may come away disappointed by the gameplay change, but if you wander in with an open mind you will find that this transformation of the Mana world is fantastic. Dungeon crawling games can wear thin over time, but Children of Mana exudes enough class to last the whole adventure…

Mich hat Children of Mana vollends zufriedengestellt.

Children of Mana is a pleasant and absorbing game for the Nintendo DS. It has a beautiful fantasy story and manga style art. In Children of Mana you select from one of four different characters. Each one is a different class. Three of them are male and one is female. One is a swordsman, one is a kind of genie and the third one is a dwarf. There are several nature spirits based on the elements and the seasons that you can choose from to summon as a helper. There was a very long subtitled story at the beginning which you had to go through and could not skip. Later you can make the dialog screens go faster by holding down the "A" button.

Ultimately, Children of Mana is wonderfully rendered, but when compared to Secret of Mana's engaging narrative, Children of Mana's sparse and slow story falls short. The game is still fun, especially if you enjoy dungeon-crawling and strategically nuanced battles. Fans of the Mana series should check it out, but don't hold your expectations too high.

Those that have been waiting for a true return to form for the Mana series after the rushed GBA remake of the original (Sword of Mana), might be displeased as this does not feel like an addition to the series. However, with such wonderful presentation, a very tight gameplay dungeon-crawling mechanic and lots of extra stuff included, Children of Mana succeeds as a standalone game in its own right.

Is this the game Mana fans have been waiting for? Probably not. However, Children of Mana is an excellent game in its own right, bringing dungeon crawling to a new level on Nintendo DS.

In the end, you’re either going to love or hate Children of Mana. Hardcore gamers expecting to get a sequel to the popular Secret of Mana series from the days of the Super Nintendo are going to be let down purely based on the dungeon crawler design of the game. For fans of games like Blizzard’s Diablo, or repeat gamers that enjoyed Sword of Mana despite its harsh criticism and apparent downsides, Children of Mana is a keeper. The action is solid, the amount of character customization is definitely robust, the amount of side quests and bonus missions to partake in will ensure players that the adventure isn’t over too quickly, and the game is simply beautiful on an audio/visual level. As far as hack-n-slash RPGs go, Children of Mana is one of the best we’ve seen on a handheld, and for dungeon crawler addicts Square Enix has definitely hit the spot.

The Nintendo DS has a lot of games, like I’ve said before, and Children of Mana might be one of those games you don’t know about. Square Enix is known for the Final Fantasy series, everything else they tend to release just seems to be filler, minus any of the Dragon Quest games too. The Mana series use to be well known, but after numerous failures nobody is willing to try any of these games. Children of Mana is worthy of the name and if you have the time and money I recommend picking this up. This game will defiantly fulfill all your dungeon crawling needs when you are on the go.

Children of Mana is not the longest game in the world, but it sure is a fun ride while it lasts, especially if you have friends that are into it as well.

Children of Mana is finally on the DS and finally available for the countless Mana fans that have waited for it patiently. However, it’s also ready to disappoint in terms of a true Secret of Mana sequel. Children of Mana is a very solid dungeon hack but if you were hoping for the next groundbreaking RPG in the Mana universe, you may be let down. Still, with an amazingly polished presentation of stunning graphics and epic music, this game still feels a little like the Mana we’ve wanted. Buy this game if you’ve got some friends to play through it with you (via DS local multiplayer) but otherwise, you may find the dungeon crawling gameplay to wear thin a little too quickly…

So it looks like Children of Mana is another nail in the coffin of the Seiken Densetsu series. But because the series experienced such greatness with Seiken Densetsu 2 (Secret of Mana) and Seiken Densetsu 3, gamers still cling to vestiges of hope that the series will one day have that long-awaited triumphant return to form. Here's hoping that future Seiken Densetsu installments will meet those elevated expectations.

Ultimately there’s just not much to Children of Mana. It fails to take advantage of any of the DS’ unique features and the gameplay is simplistic and completely uninspired. There are better portable RPGs out there like the recently released Final Fantasy III or Valkyrie Profile for the PSP. Either of those are much more satisfying in depth, presentation and execution.

Children of Mana feels like a game that could – and probably should – have been so much better. If you enjoy hack-and-slash dungeon crawlers then you’re likely to be mildly chuffed with its simplistic gameplay. For the rest of us though, the experience is just far too repetitive - there’s no sense of exploration, there are no puzzles to solve and the combat is pretty much limited to pressing the same button over and over again. In small gaming chunks its flaws are less obvious and the appealing art style makes it seem far more jolly - sit down for an hour and trawl through a dungeon or two and even the gorgeous graphics aren't enough to hide its shallow nature.

The sad truth is that a lack of variety means it gets boring quickly. Aside from the one (O-N-E) village you get to visit, the only available distraction is the side-quests. And what do you know? - They're really rather similar to the dungeons. Disappointing, all told.

Maybe I expected too much and am therefore über critical. Still I can hardly imagine that someone gets drawn into this Mana game which is extremely monotone. You can only hope that the ancient Secret of Mana gets released on Virtual Console as then you'll be sure to get quality for your money.

I play games to avoid being bored, but Children of Mana is one of the few games that crosses the line between being a game and being another boring chore. The storyline and dialogue leave a lot to be desired and the dungeon crawling is about as interesting as watching paint dry. While there certainly are facets to the game that attempt to keep the experience fresh, the overall attention to fun is seemingly lost and though the audio / visual presentation is quite good, the rest of the game is quite mediocre at best. It's not the worst game ever made, but wow can it drag on and on and on and on and on

Comparing Children to Secret of Mana is not exactly fair, as they are two different types of games. CoM is, at its heart, purely a button-mashing dungeon hack. There isn't a lot of depth or variety here, but if you go into the game without high expectations, you may find yourself pleasantly surprised. Add one point to the score if you're a huge Mana fan and/or have people to play with, or if you like Diablo-like dungeon crawlers. Otherwise, stay away.

Children of Mana feels like a relic of game design. The simplistic dungeon crawling feels almost primitive by today's standards. When playing this game, it's difficult to shake the feeling that you're traveling a short path to nowhere. The gem system, magic, and multiple unique weapons are solid ideas that unfortunately go to waste. The story isn't substantial enough to excuse the tedious gameplay in Children of Mana, and the result is a mediocre action adventure that fails to generate any excitement. Unless you're content with the most basic of dungeon crawlers, you'll be disappointed by this game.

With its weak story, dull combat, and host of annoyances, Children of Mana just isn't very much fun to play. Multiplayer can be enjoyable, but most of the time players will be going solo, and will be quite bored doing so. The game as a whole just feels pointless -- you don't connect with the world and its characters, and you never feel like you're really accomplishing anything beyond hacking up enemies and collecting items of varying usefulness. In the end, Children of Mana is another nail in the coffin of Square Enix's once-revered Mana franchise. One can only hope that the upcoming Dawn of Mana will be able to restore this series to its former glory, but when faced with weak efforts like this, it's hard to be optimistic. Children, see me after class.

With an ever-growing number of quality RPGs already available for the DS, and countless more for the Gameboy Advance, there's really no reason to put up with crap like this. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll be over in the corner weeping, pining for my lost weekends...

Digital Press - Classic Video Games
Children of Mana is easily the weakest entry in this series. Fans will give it a chance, yet by the end, it doesn't matter how deeply involved you are with this franchise. After the first two or three hours, the story branches are obvious and you've seen everything. There's not enough here to carry a full-length game.

Game Revolution
To recap, Children of Mana is repetitive, tedious, dull, monotonous, and boring. The only good thing about this game is that it will actually make you want to do something productive, just to stop playing it. Take our word and don't adopt Children of Mana.
