The player awakens one morning to discover their quiet contemporary suburban neighbourhood overrun by shambling corpses hungering for human flesh. Through selections from the game's multiple-choice interface, the player generates a character with certain skills and abilities and between these pre-requisites and further ongoing choice selection, the story unfolds. Players are presented (in text) with ongoing ethical and tactical conundrums such as whether or not to rescue the child trapped in a tree by three zombies beneath, whether to seek refuge in a church, mall or prison, and (numerous times) whether to noisily extinguish the threat of a given zombie at the risk of alerting other nearby zombies possibly lurking nearby.
The game's story of escape and survival unfolds in a more-or-less linear fashion, though player choices do inform the makeup (if any) of the travelling fellowship of other zombiepocalypse survivors traveling along with the player, all of whom have different strengths and weaknesses and not all of whom get along with each other very well under stressful situations.
