Chuck II doesn't give up much in the fun department in it's step down the evolutionary scale from Genesis to Game Gear. Chuck II is a chip off the old Chuck.

So Chuck 2 isn't as memorable a Sega CD title as, say, Lunar: Eternal Blue or Snatcher. But when you consider the flood of FMV games that plagued and shortened the life of a very potential-ridden system, any real form of a 2D title is worth mentioning. Granted, the game hasn't aged very well, but at least the soundtrack's timeless.

Chuck II does feature some slick scaling and rotation effects, and offers more variety than the first game. There are bonus stages including a button-tapping river race. The music is not nearly as catchy as the first game. Personally I prefer the original, but Son of Chuck still rates high in terms of fun.

This is yet another example of how Game Gear can do justice to a game on a diminished platform. Chuck Rock 2 has basically everything the Genesis has. Huge levels, lots of technique and great animations are the highlight. One quibble, though: the control is loose, and can make things a bit aggravating at times

Essentially the cartridge version with some improved graphics and, of course, great CD sound. There's no lag for access time in the amusing opening cartoon sequence. Chuck Rock is hilarious and could give Fred Flintstone an acting lesson or two.

The opening cartoon for this game is dynamite and the game isn't too shabby either. The control is a little stiff, so keep the punching bag handy. There is also a lot of humor to be found in the details of the levels.

All in all, this game is as I suspected best fit for children, if anyone at all. I enjoyed and played it more when I was eleven, and I appreciated the humour more, but then again my demands were lower during that time. Today, before writing this review, I could beat on about the fourth try, and I didn't really have fun (it is easy to learn from mistakes and get past annoying things when you have two extra credits). It looks and sounds too average to stand out from the great load of platformers for this system. According to the Swedish magazine Sega Force, the 8-bit versions were superior because the levels added in the Mega Drive version are more like filler material. There is also a CD version available, with an enhanced soundtrack (could be useful), cartoon cut scenes, and more difficulty levels. Check out the other versions and forget this one, if you're at all interested in becoming a stone age baby. If you just want a platformer, I recommend Chiki Chiki Boys.
