In the end, the issues are minor; slight annoyances that are easy to look past if you allow yourself to be taken in but City in Motion’s addictive and entertaining management experience. I love it and if you have the slightest interest in management games, if you can remember the sheer joy of games of yore like Sim City and Theme Park, then this could be the game for you.

Overall Cities in Motion combines a great mixture of flexibility, challenging difficulties and a great interface. All of this culminates into a great product that I just wanted to keep playing and playing. Adding that extra line, jacking the ticket prices just a bit, it’s all extremely engrossing and rewarding if you put the time in to learn the ins and outs of this soon to be cult hit game.

To be fair, this is an awesome game, very well presented, very well written, absorbing and entertaining. But, like SimCity, Transport Tycoon or any other simulation it has its niche audience and whilst there appears to be have been a bit of a gap in this genre recently it will only appeal to those who enjoy this kind of city-wide management. It won’t pull the hardcore FPS guys away from their gamepads, but it certainly keeps those of us who really enjoy this kind of game enthralled for many hours. Well done Paradox and Colossal Order, a game well done.

A positive surprise, a remarkable "public transport tycoon" game from a brand new dev team that clears all the basic hurdles of the genre and manages to be entertaining. Traffic simulation needs some fixes, but otherwise quite polished and beautiful - just make sure your video card is good enough.

All in all, Cities in Motion is really a fantastically relaxing simulator; you can take it as slowly as you like as you can build whilst paused – but for the total control freaks amongst us (and many people who enjoy games like this also enjoy knowing every little statistical piece of information we can get our hands on), we would really like to have more information available. It’s still possible to build up your travel empire without it, but there’s just no reason for it to be missing. To sum up, if this is your kind of game, at £15 Cities in Motion is a bargain for a game which will keep you busy for absolutely ages.

Veterans of the genre that have a craving for a good transport sim really shouldn’t pass up on Cities in Motion. The game is rich in features and you will be thrilled by how it looks and plays and by its ever shifting dynamics. New to the genre and intrigued but a little daunted? Set aside your worries, Cities in Motion is very easy to get into and the best introduction to the genre one could possibly ask for.

Overall, between the tiny interface problems and the really slow progression the game takes some time to get used to and then a lot of time needs to be invested to see any real progression. Since the game pauses when you leave it in a windowed mode, you can’t just let it run in the background and do something else while you accrue some cash in the game. This means it sort of requires constant attention even if it’s just watching the city do its thing for a month or so (which can be rapidly sped up). I would like to see a more clear line of progression as well as the ability to start a campaign in any of the cities available without having to complete all of another city.

The only serious drawback with Cities in Motion is the single-minded nature of the simulation. You need to have--or at least be able to develop--a real love of mass transit to get much out of the game. Unlike in the usual SimCity clone, you can't just skip on to some other aspect of virtual city planning whenever the whole subway thing gets a little old. But with that said, the game does what it does very well, especially when you consider how much of a simulation you get for the low $20 price. Even municipal experts would be hard pressed to tell the difference between real cities and the virtual ones here because of the realistic traffic patterns and commuter demands. If you long to make the trains run on time, this is your game.

With 100 buildings, twelve scenarios and thirty vehicle types, we’re hoping that the game will be well supported by an active modding community as well as post-release DLC. At the moment actual content is a tad sparse, but at a knockdown price of £14.99, you’re getting a lot for your money. The game, while difficult, is undeniably addictive. If you’ve ever dipped your toe in the city / transport simulation water, then you’ll find yourself right at home.

One major unfortunate consequence of the “modernization” of Transport Tycoon is that the scope of the players’ efforts has been reduced. You can only move passengers, not cargo, and you only get to work on one city at a time instead of everywhere all at once. The massiveness of the initial challenge in Transport Tycoon (“here’s $10, do this entire map”) has no real counterpart in Cities, and the diverse nature of your network in TT has no real counterpart in Cities either. Ultimately, whatever OpenTTD’s (few) failings are, I will probably still be playing it in ten years, and I will have forgotten about Cities entirely. This doesn’t mean Cities isn’t good, it’s just not as world-conqueringly great as Transport Tycoon. And there are tons of decent, worthwhile games that can’t live up to that standard.

Overall I was surprised by how addicted I became to playing this game, but I think that was through a frustrating need to at least be able to complete the first scenario, rather than enjoyment.

It's not without its quirks but Cities In Motion is a dependable heir to the transport sim genre's throne.

I'm conflicted with Cities in Motion. The lack of feedback, in-game competition, and unpredictability hurt the game's long-term draw; some older business simulations didn't have these problems. Cities in Motion does feature stellar tools and is one of the prettier business simulations on the market. If you enjoy business sims, and if you have the patience to experiment and tinker with the game's systems, you'll definitely want to give Cities in Motion a try.

Unfortunately, it really isn't enough to hold up a game that's in this many pieces. Until you can play Cities In Motion for more than an hour or two without 3-4 crashes, this is a game that you definitely should avoid. There's hope still, as the game is quite fun to play in the brief spurts that it's active, but you will doubtlessly end up frustrated and cursing its name if you try to play it now. $20 is too much to ask for a broken experience, no matter how entertaining.

A transitory pleasure that polishes up nice. But it lacks variety and competition, and is just a little bit too difficult.

Cities in Motion is a well-made public transportation simulation. Nothing more, nothing less.

Developer Colossal Order should be applauded for their first effort. Like a decent PC-based sim game should, Cities in Motion thrusts you into a world of pretty pictures and skull-crushing numbers, navigable only by mouse and keyboard. This should easily fill the void in the hearts of stricken Transport Tycoon fans, and could even appeal to Sim City lovers on some level with its budget-title charms. The bottom line is that followers of the genre should buy this immediately. For everyone else, download the demo before you decide to pay the fare.
