Wow!

Here is another highly addictive game with a theme similar to games like Tetris and Pac Attack. The One-player Mode is very nice in that you plot your progress and the head-to-head competition is a must. A very good game.

Columns III: Revenge of Columns is a capable puzzler in many respects, but falls well short of the appeal of its own predecessor. You'd be better off spending your money on the original Columns. It's a better version of the same idea, as this retooling into a constant one-on-one versus puzzler just isn't as much fun as taking on the stack yourself. But don't feel bad, Columns III. Nobody remembers Tetris 2 either.

Columns III: Revenge of Columns is a capable puzzler in many respects, but falls well short of the appeal of its own predecessor. You'd be better off spending your 800 Wii Points on a download of the original Columns, which is already available on the Virtual Console and has been since the Wii launched in 2006. It's a better version of the Columns design, as this retooling into a constant one-on-one versus puzzler just isn't as much fun as taking on the stack by yourself. But don't feel bad, Columns III. You would be much better off buying the original Columns or one of the other puzzlers such as Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine which are also available on the Virtual Console. Columns III is likely to be a bit of a disappointment for anyone willing to take a chance on it.

The franchise has lost its way since its maiden voyage into arcades and on the Genesis, and while this edition makes for an interesting side note and a good multi-player puzzle game, it's just not a worthy successor to Columns. Perhaps Sega realized this and chose not to publish the game outside Japan itself, instead leaving it up to Vic Tokai to see if an audience for the game existed abroad. Column's Revenge is sure to fall on deaf ears with a single player mode that pales in comparison to the original game, a versus mode which lacks the excellent gameplay of the series it tries so hard to copy, and the general rarity of Sega Tap users to market the game's one triumph – its well done five-player battle. As it stands, Columns III only helps make the case that Sega just rips off other franchises for its sterile puzzle brand.
