GenesisThe Video Game Critic
Comix Zone is an extremely original and visually impressive game which immerses you in a comic book world. It's probably one of the coolest games I've ever seen on the Genesis. The idea behind it is that the comic's author has magically switched places with the book's villain. Your hero moves from frame to frame and page to page as a large hand draws new villains for you to fight. The remarkable graphics are nearly comic book quality, with bubbles of dialog that appear every so often. Gameplay involves fighting monsters, picking up objects, and opening new areas. The game also features some kick-ass music and multiple pathways. The biggest problem with Comix Zone is its lack of continues. One misstep off a ledge and it's game over, no matter how well you've done up to that point. Still, I think this is a highly underrated game.

Everything about Comix Zone is amazing; from it's great music to the eyeball-popping graphics and smooth-as-butter playability, it's the best game to be released for the Genesis so far this year. Get it, you fools!

GenesisAll Game Guide
The way that you actually feel that you are playing a game that is within a comic book makes this game truly innovative. And, because it is a comic book, there is an actual story that develops, even as you fight. It's up to you whether or not there's a happy ending.

Comix Zone is one incredibly slick videogame. I had a pretty good idea that I was going to dig this diversion immensely and I do. I wish there was a little more variety to the gameplay and I'd like to have more control with the fighting. Perhaps there should be a chance to play the game from the enemy's perspective. And it should definitely be longer. But all quibbling aside, this is one to grab.

Bravissimo!

Comix Zone is a solid brawler that also benefits from a phenomenal sense of style. While it wouldn't quite stand on its mechanics alone, the game has more than enough style going for it to be something truly special. It was clearly produced by people who have a lot of love and respect for comic books as a medium. If you feel the same way, you owe it to yourself to give Comix Zone a try. Even if that’s not a selling point for you, the title remains a fun and challenging brawler with a unique setting and plenty of personality.

Dommage.

Comix Zone is more than the sum of its parts. The scrolling 'beat em up' genre is pretty much dead on its feet these days which is a shame when it can offer up gaming experiences as original and interesting as this. This comes highly recommended.

The game is arguably a little too tough, with plenty of ways to lose health but few to top it back up again, and there are a couple of precision do-or-die leaps that act as stark reminders of the game's unforgiving vintage. Those caveats aside, Comix Zone still impresses with its ideas and execution and is a definite highlight of SEGA's retro line-up.

The visuals and sound are some of the best seen in the history of the Genesis. It may not have the gameplay variety of a Streets of Rage or Golden Axe, but its unique gimmick gives it more than enough to make Comix Zone a classic.

Overall, Comix Zone is one of the most amazing games on the Genesis. Every aspect of the game: the gameplay, the control, the graphics, and the sound, smack of first-rate effort. You can tell a lot of effort went into the game, and it paid off in spades. The game has a certain charm to it that no game since has been able to match.

GenesisElectronic Gaming Monthly (EGM)
In an age with so many "me-too" games. Comix Zone demands to be noticed with it's totally unique look, feel and style. Although I think I've seen this idea in a few cartoons, this is the first time in a video game and I'm quite impressed. The control is pretty good, the sounds aren't the typical Sega rehash and the on-going dialogue thrusts you into the dark and seedy world of a comic book...or something like that. You should check this out, if only for it's originality.

Comix Zone joined several of its 16-bit brethren in the release of SEGA Genesis Collection for the PS2 a few months ago. Other than that, opportunities to experience this game have been few and far between. There's a genuine appeal to the premise of Comix Zone -- it's simply understood that the concept of having your own drawings come to life is totally awesome. But as you'll probably never get to do battle with your own notebook-scribbled sketches for new Mario baddies and Mega Man Robot Masters, you may want to give Comix Zone a look. It may be frustratingly difficult, but even frustratingly difficult is more fun than some of those old 5th grade math classes.

Other than that, this is the first opportunity modern gamers have had to experience the title – definitely the first for dedicated Nintendo fans, who, in 1995, were too busy occupying themselves with thoughts of the upcoming Virtual Boy to notice any new game arriving on Sega's systems. Still, Comix Zone doesn't possess quite enough of anything to turn many heads. Comix Zone is a very cool idea for a game that wasn't executed properly, but it's still slicker that most and one of the few decent 16-bit games coming out.

Whilst Sega decides how best to get Sonic the Hedgehog fans to forgive them, they might wish to put a remake of Comix Zone on the cards, too. The charm, difficulty, and writing are a huge plus, and for a game released in 1995, I had a blast playing through it again. If you’ve been enjoying games such as Comic Jumper or you have a penchant for classic beat ‘em ups, then try Comix Zone.

You really want to love Comix Zone for it's original elements, but after a few panels, the honeymoon's over. Although the game gets a thumbs-up for it's clever format, the developers need to go back to the drawing board to work out better controls and add variety to the gameplay.

Much like the gaudy early 90s comic books that inspired it, beneath Comix Zone's self-consciously dynamic exterior lurks something rather tedious - more Rob Liefeld than Jack Kirby.

Comix Zone is one of my favorite Genesis titles, but SEGA has done a real disservice with this version. The "enhanced" visual setting makes the game look worse than the classic view and the dodge move is almost impossible to pull off. There have been a lot of old games released on XBLA at this point and most of them were given more care and attention than Comix Zone. Love the game, just not this version.

And that’s just it - playing as a hero in a comic book should be fun. Comix Zone is not. Perhaps if Sega would have shelled out the money required to nab a Marvel or DC Comics license (any character would do - Sketch’s story is not terribly interesting) and squelched the bad design choices early on - perhaps then Comix Zone would have earned a spot in history as one of the late, great, games of the 16-bit era. In the end, though, the game’s eventual commercial failure would foreshadow the near complete abandonment of sprite-based console gaming over the next decade, as well as Sega’s fall from its lofty position as one of the top two game development companies in the world. For collectors, Comix Zone is worth picking up for its unique graphical style, but those looking for an enjoyable experience on the Sega Genesis should cast their eyes towards one of the many other, better action games on the system.

Comix Zone is not without its good points. It's innovative, and I wouldn't mind seeing these innovations implemented on more titles. Also, the graphics are better than on most Genesis brawlers, and the very design of the levels makes for a unique visual experience. If you like your games pretty and you don't mind flawed gameplay, then you might enjoy Comix Zone. Or if you're some sort of masochist like Allec and find pleasure in games that aren't fun, then too you might enjoy Comix Zone. As for me, I'll stick with my Ninja Turtle games. Hyperstone Heist rocks my socks.
