Conan

Conan ist auf der Xbox ein richtig schickes Hack´n Slay, das vor allem den Fans des wilden Barbaren gefallen wird. Hier kann nach Herzenslust alles umgehauen werden was bei drei nicht auf dem Baum ist, und das auch noch mit schönen Spezialschlägen in einer schönen Umgebung. Zwar hat es mit der teilweise merkwürdigen Kameraführung auch seine Schattenseiten, aber diese lassen sich auf jeden verschmerzen.

Whilst the Xbox version is practically identical to the PC version of Conan, the controls feel more comfortable and it's easier to enjoy the multiplayer options in the game. Conan feels more like a console action/RPG and compares favourably to other games in that genre on Xbox. I was also very pleased to see the game listed at only £29.99 which represents great value for money especially when you consider that the game is Xbox Live compatible too. Conan fans are sure to be pleased with this game that's been based on the fabled character.

Whilst there are few problems with Conan, the main suspects being the save game system and the collision detection problems, it is actually a good game. Just before I finished reviewing the game I found out that a multiplayer update (1.3) has been released which will enable you to play 3 different games online or on a LAN. Body Count (which is essentially a fight 'till you drop mode), Player vs. Player for those arena battles and Time Challenges that gives you 60 seconds to score as many points through combat as you can. Only Player vs. Player can't be played against the AI. I couldn't find anyone online to play against but seeing as the game isn't released until April 8th this isn't really surprising. Still I think this multiplayer component could be popular and is a worthwhile addition to the game. If you're a fan of the Conan stories or if you like action games with a heavy focus on combat then you should enjoy Conan.

Am meisten Spaß macht mir das Kampfsystem: Die Gefechte sind heftig, aber weniger hektisch als zum Beispiel in Gladiator. Trotzdem muss ich mich anstrengen, um den richtigen Rythmus für einen speziellen Gegner oder eine besonders effektive Kombo finden. Auch die Atmospähre gefällt mir. Vor allem, weil ab und zu witzige Details die düstere Stimmung auflockern. Etwa, wenn mich das Publikum in einer Kampfarena mit Gemüse bewirft oder sich im Spukschloss plötzlich geistlose Skelette mit skelettlosen Geistern prügeln. Auf Dauer wird das Metzeln dennoch ein wenig eintönig, die paar Rätsel sorgen nicht wirklich für Abwechslung.

Conan is een redelijk leuke titel maar een hoop jammerlijke minpunten weerhouden het spel ervan echt geslaagd te zijn.

Endlich kann ich mit Conan in den Kampf ziehen. Darauf habe ich lange gewartet. Besonders die zahlreichen Schlagvarianten und die tolle Atmosphäre konnten mich begeistern. Durch die Erfahrungspunkte erhält das Spiel einen tollen Rollenspiel-Einschlag. Hätten die Entwickler die Technik nicht so vernachlässigt, wäre eine höhere Wertung drin gewesen.

Tilt factor would probably push this game further along the echelons of cult greatness, as Conan is a grand, adventurous, romp that really encapsulates the qualities found within the much loved tale. The game certainly has its strengths and being Conan is definitely one of them. However, for non purists its technical flaws, limited execution, and clunky characteristics cannot be overlooked. Conan is a great hack-and-slash adventure for gamers and a sequel that addressed those limitations discussed would be well received.

Einen Mehrspielermodus vermisse ich ziemlich, denn mit Freunden hackt es sich einfach schöner. Dass mir Conan trotzdem Spaß gemacht hat, liegt an folgenden Punkten: 1. In Sachen Körperbau kann ich mich perfekt mit der Spielfigur identifizieren und verschmelze förmlich mit ihr. 2. Unkompliziertes Metzeln fand ich schon immer gut. 3. Der Soundtrack ist einfach geil. Den etwas eintönigen Spielablauf lockerten die Entwickler mit zahlreichen Bosskämpfen auf. Klar ist Conan kein Begleiter fürs Leben, doch das sind Weiber auch nicht und die holen wir Männer uns doch auch dauernd ins Haus.

Manche Dinge sollte man besser vermeiden. Dazu gehört etwa, sich als abgehalftertes TV-Sternchen mitten im australischen Urwald der Gnade der Zuschauer auszuliefern. Ebenfalls auf der Tabu-Liste steht, aus Jux und Dollerei Barbarendörfer abzufackeln, deren Bewohner gerade ihren Fünfuhrtee nehmen. Insbesondere wenn es sich dabei um die Cimmerier handelt.

Le héros cimmérien créé par Robert E. Howard mais popularisé par Arnold Schwarzenegger à l'écran, Conan le barbare, revient après une longue absence dans un jeu d'action type hack and slash...

Overall Conan is no more than an average title, and pales in comparison to comparable games in the genre like Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II and Otogi, both of which are far superior.

I’m not one to needlessly pound on a game for making mistakes, but one can only wonder what Cauldron’s design priorities where with this game. Making it look pretty? Certainly. Staying true to the spirit of the original Conan novels? Spot on. Providing a diverse range of environments and enemies? No complaints there.

Conan possède quelques atouts mais ses défauts lui faisant beaucoup d'ombre, il vous faudra vous armer de patience (en plus des armes qui vous attendent) pour mener à bien ce périple qui tend plus vers le comique que l'initiatique.

Et un beat'em all moyen de plus ! Et oui, c'est tout ce qu'est Conan, un jeu sans envergure dans lequel on a du mal à entrer. Malgré quelques bonnes idées comme le fait de pouvoir améliorer les capacités de son personnage grâce aux points d'expérience gagnés lors des combats, la jouabilité est beaucoup trop molle et approximative pour faire du titre de Cauldron un jeu passionnant.

To sum it up, Conan is a typical ported modern-day console brawler with very little gameplay depth to keep PC gamers occupied. Actually, the weird camera issues and unchallenging AI are likely to fend off any gamer out there. The combat is enjoyable for a few hours tops, but after a while players will most probably get tired of the mindless action. Also, there isn't anything exceptionally alluring that would draw you back into the game after you've played it for, say, several hours. There's no multiplayer, or any additional feature that might make the whole thing more interesting. It's a shame really, given the amazing potential of the franchise.

Précisons pour terminer que cette version gameCube se montre moins belle et moins jouable que ses consoeurs malgré le temps qu'il lui aura fallu pour voir le jour, on croit rêver !

Un titre sans saveur, mal animé et au gameplay plus que douteux. Seuls quelques morceaux de musique tirés tout droit de la bande originale du film sont à sauver. Achetez plutôt le CD de la B.O. par Basil Poledouris, ça suffira.
