But on a different note, it’s nice that the game includes some light puzzle-solving and time-calculated platform challenges; these provide great variant to the combat-heavy system. There are combo upgrades and the ability to wield different kinds of weapons; these keep the action fresh and particularly engaging. As you’ll notice, the label is Rated M for violence and nudity, and they are everywhere; you’ll be rescuing maidens in distress, stripped off their clothes, and waiting to be crushed by your love. Those individuals looking for a strong action adventure would be pleased with Conan. It’s definite must-have for fans of hack-and-slash genre.

At the end of it all, Conan is an absolutely storming adventure, and I will definitely recommend it to any fans of the genre; it has been one of the most enjoyable titles of its type that I have played in a long time. There are a few flaws that stop it from being truly great, but it does what it sets out to do - provide a few hours of happy blood-lust, carving a path of destruction through hordes of enemies. And no one can argue with the fun in that - especially when I've got a really big sword backing me up.

All said, Conan the game, like the titular barbarian himself, is very one dimensional. It’s great for getting in a little much needed smashing time, and maybe for checking out some computer generated boobage, but after a run through or three of the story mode it’s pretty much spent. Despite that and the few gameplay nuisances Conan is a mostly enjoyable skull-cleaving romp. Combat is visceral and satisfying, and the baddies are numerous and variable enough to keep things interesting. The lack of any extra stuff beyond the relatively short campaign probably relegates Conan to the land of the rentals unless you’re really into Conan, really into this kind of hack and slash fare, or both, but for anyone who likes gory action it’s certainly worth checking out.

PlayStation 3Cheat Code Central (2007)
Conan is definitely short and linear, and its sometimes restrictive camera emphasizes both these points. It also could have used an extra coat of polish on its ugly in-game engine cutscenes and sloppy collision detection. For every minor flaw though, Conan redeems itself with cool little touches; we love pulling health-draining arrows from our chests and torching village huts to reveal orb-filled treasure chests. Minor stuff, good and bad, aside, Conan really shines with its deep and intuitive combat, gritty and gory visuals, and barely-catch-your-breath boss battles, making it a must-play for fans of the genre or anyone looking for a pulse-pounding action experience. Like a refreshing flagan of mead, Conan really hits the spot.

Fans of Conan will appreciate this game as much as hack-and-slash fans who've never heard of the franchise. It's a lot of fun, challenging without being frustrating and all in all, a great example of its genre.

Xbox 360Gamer Within (Oct 31, 2007)
While Conan isn’t an original game by any means, it still manages to be a thoroughly entertaining experience in the end, and that’s really what counts. When it comes down to it, Conan is non-stop action all the way through with nary a moment to catch your breath. The insanely violent combat totally appeals to your sadistic side and literally sucks you in, and unfortunately, it’s all done before you know it as the game clocks in at roughly eight hours. Still, if you have an insatiable bloodlust or are just looking for a plain fun hack and slash adventure game, Conan surely doesn’t disappoint.

Xbox 360Console Obsession (Nov 01, 2007)
There may be superior action titles on the market, although Conan is still very much worthy of the attention of any action fan or those who sadistically enjoy dicing limbs off. It’s a bloody, sexist and very playable game, but whilst Conan should flatter Sony, it’s not exactly up to the standards of the God of War series. Now please excuse us, we’re certain that more damsels in distress are wanting their dignity back.

Xbox 360Deeko (Nov 13, 2007)
At the end of the day, Conan is a fantastically fun game, that doesn't take itself too serious and knows what kind of creature it is -- something that a good deal of games nowadays could benefit from. It's a bloody, crude T&A filled romp, fueled by adolescent dreams of being the ultimate badass -- brought to life lovingly on a next-gen console. Packed with blood soaked carnage, gameplay which is surprisingly deep, and enjoyable battles it's a game that will please any action fan. While it doesn't completely reinvent the wheel in action/ adventure games, it doesn't have to. It just has to be a fun action game - and on that alone it delivers in bloody buckets.

If you're into the character Conan or the action/adventure "hack and slash" style genre then you owe it to yourself to spend an evening or two with this game. Sometimes the guilty pleasures in life are the best kind.

While it's not exactly an original formula, Conan's gory action and light character-building elements should be just enough to keep most gamers entertained. Despite the game's flaws, I have to admit I had quite a bit of fun while playing it, especially while dismembering my enemies with my dual-wielded swords. If you liked God of War or you're just a big Conan fanboy, then make sure to give this title a look. At the very least, download the demo and give it a whirl.

Xbox 360The Review Busters (2007)
If you liked God of War then Conan is worth checking out. This game has an easy learning curve and a story that should please fans of the Conan series. Conan is a clone to God of War and it can be seen throughout the entire game, but that is alright since Conan is fun to play, they took all the great aspects of that game and turned it into their own. You should get a few good hours with this game, if you a achievement whore then you will defiantly have a good while with Conan. If you are looking for a hack and slash game with lots of violence then buy Conan. Now if you are a horny teenager that loves virtual nudity then find enough money to buy Conan right away, you will thank me when you are playing this late at night.

Xbox 360Xbox World Australia (XWA) (Oct 06, 2007)
Conan appeared on the Xbox 360 out of nowhere like a thief in the night, and like its titular hero, it is brutal, powerful, and very rough around the edges. In a lot of ways, it feels like a budget title with lofty ambitions elevated above its standing, and while the game certainly holds its own thanks to the enjoyable combat and set-piece boss battles and encounters, it is never going to be the sort of shiny jewel that Conan himself would want to steal. If you're a fan of the hillborn savage or enjoyed God of War then you should really check out Conan, otherwise, maybe give it a rent.

Xbox 360411mania.com (Dec 07, 2007)
If you’re a huge fan of Howard’s hulking Cimmerian and also a big-time action gaming fan, then Conan is probably worth a buy. Though the game is on the short side, the action is fast, furious, and relentless. If you didn’t say ‘yes’ to both those criteria, however, then this one likely slips down to just a solid weekend rental.

PlayStation 3GameSpot (Oct 24, 2007)
Perhaps the biggest mark against Conan is its length. At around six hours, it's a pretty brief adventure. But a good deal of craft went into making all of the game's over-the-top violence look so great, and it's the kind of guilty pleasure you'll want to savor.

Xbox 360JustPressPlay (Oct 21, 2007)
Conan is definitely a feel good, let me hack you to pieces, I rule all, type of game. The variety of weaponry and moves more than make up for the complete lack of camera control and sometimes a gang of enemies that corner you and turn you in to pieces. Although I have completed the game, with cheats unlocked now, I have an urge to go forth and pillage and plunder once again!

Xbox 360MS Xbox World (Nov 12, 2007)
Conan is an enjoyably brutal experience, the game's visuals however don’t do it any favours though. I personally am hoping for a sequel, and for the developers to correct their wrong doings and deliver an extensive bump in the visual flair. They should also give barbarians even more damsels to rescue, with more ludicrously funny lines to go along with it, and more importantly push forward further with the game's easy and intuitive combat system.

Xbox 360Lawrence (Nov 27, 2007)
Never in my long history of videogaming have I seen such a blatant case of developmental plagiarism as Conan. The team behind it took virtually every single aspect of God of War and copied-and-pasted it into the world previously occupied by Governor Schwarzenegger. That’s not to say Conan is a “bad” game exactly, it’s just wholly uninspired. Once you get past the fact that it’s a ripoff, it’s actually kind of fun to hack through countless enemies and save the occasional topless maiden. Some of the kill animations are particularly brutal, but the combat gets repetitive fairly quickly.
74
PlayStation 3Gamer 2.0 (Oct 30, 2007)
For what its worth, Conan is a rather intense and short game. Fighting through all the hordes and spending time backtracking only amounted to about seven hours of gameplay, and with no multiplayer or secrets to unlock, that’s quite a disappointment in terms of replay. In the overall scope however, Conan may copy God of War in terms of combat, but it makes itself known by striking an original story and lush visuals in a truly enigmatic setting.

PlayStation 3PSX Extreme (Nov 12, 2007)
Conan is worth playing, but it's not worth the price of admission. Unless, of course, you want to rent it, which is exactly what we'd recommend for most people. But on the other hand, if you're a big fan of simple, bloody action games and would relish a second - or third - play-through, than Nihilistic has a gem for you.

Xbox 360Console Monster (Nov 08, 2007)
Conan is no doubt an enjoyable game, but it’s one of those that could have been a lot better. The graphics aren’t too bad nor is the sound, but if more time was spent on them, maybe Conan would be that more enjoyable. It’s good to chop peoples heads off, slice them in half and impale them onto spikes, but even though the game is gory, the puzzles (if you can call them that) are really basic; pull levers, push pillars to make a bridge and so on, and with doors locking behind you, there is no way to get lost. It’s an enjoyable game with a few niggles here and there, but I know the younger generation would enjoy it, but being an 18 rated game, it’s hard to see the ‘older’ audience forking out the £40RRP for Conan with many other titles due for release soon. Conan is fun to play and it’s gory, but to be honest it‘s not worth its £40 RRP, maybe £25. I was expecting Conan to be poor, but it was nice to get a shock of playing a good title.

Xbox 360Game Informer Magazine (Nov, 2007)
Never is this more apparent than in the final level of the game, at which point the fights are way too long and frustrating, and a slow down effect during particularly noteworthy strikes happens so often it actually seems like the game is jamming up. This is a gorgeously realized game world, but without the action to keep pace.

Xbox 360Eurogamer.net (UK) (Oct 02, 2007)
Conan doesn't set its sights high enough to set anyone's world on fire, and there's not really enough meat on the bone to recommend an immediate full price purchase, but it is a well-paced and generally satisfying hunk of tongue-in-cheek gory action. The lack of real depth to the combat engine means it'll never match up to the standard of its loftier genre peers, and the absence of any co-op or multiplayer mode in a game this demented is inexcusable, but it does make for a more shamelessly enjoyable blade-swinging romp than the similar but oh-so-dull Heavenly Sword. And it has more naked boobs. Always a plus.

PlayStation 3411mania.com (Dec 08, 2007)
At around $60, it is difficult to recommend such a short game for purchase. But if you need some mindless violence in your gaming collection, or an action romp that can help satisfy your hunger until God of War 3 shows up, then Conan is for you.

Xbox 360games xtreme (Oct 22, 2007)
Conan's a good game, not a brilliant one. There are a few frame issues with a spell or two and at times it seems like you're just hacking from one wave to the next to get to another room. The graphics could have done with some more polish and there should have been an option to play the game with a previous Conan so you could finish his skill set. The combat system is robust and the levels are decently sized and follow a specific theme. I recommend it to fans of hack/slash games as well as those who enjoyed God of War and God of War II.

If you've demolished gods as Kratos, Conan will definitely feel like God of War-lite. It has a less-than-inspired storyline, but the creative and visually fun ways that you can dispatch of the countless number of enemies keeps things from becoming too ho-hum. The ability to pick and choose your weapons is a plus, but having more info about each blade would have made for a more complete game. Conan won't blow you away, but it also won't let you down too much. And, for the time being, it's as close as you're going to get to a God-like experience on the 360.

Conan the character is brutal, honest and straight to the point, and so is Nihilistic’s version of Conan the game. Even though there isn’t much past the combat, Conan is still a lot of fun if you’re into mythological lore, saving naked woman, and getting vicious in battle. There is a good reason that “M” is slapped on the box, this game isn’t shy, and loves to see bloodshed and separated limbs. If you’re looking for a no-brainer action game, Conan delivers one bloody dish.

If your blood pressure can withstand beatings that may seem unfair, there's a lot to like about Conan's combat system and adventure. In an afternoon, you'll turn civilizations into amputees, you'll likely sleep with all of their women and at the end of it all, you'll learn just how much stress your body can withstand.

PlayStation 3Digital Entertainment News (den) (Jan 21, 2008)
Getting pleasure out of Conan requires either being a submissive female or a hardcore follower of action games. No matter which category you fall into, the going is a bit rough. Putting the presentation ticks aside, the issues with combat and controls prevent it from being the smooth experience offered by other recent entries in the genre. Conan is entertaining since it provides some of the most visceral action in the genre, but it feels too derivative to stand out merely on style alone. A decent buy, but not one that can be widely recommended.

PlayStation 3Thunderbolt Games (Aug 02, 2008)
Conan is the perfect rental title; it isn’t great and it isn’t bad either but it will undeniably entertain in the short period of time you spend with the game. Not to say that Conan doesn’t have its share of great moments; I would be lying if I said this was just a straight up action game. The mixture of cool bosses, great set pieces and immature humour makes Conan what it is - a mindless bit of fun that you shouldn’t be ashamed of enjoying. Despite this, I’d still recommend only buying the game if you find it at a decent sale price or simply just rent the title, considering this is single player only and struggles to pass the 6 hour line on the first playthrough then I’d definitely avoid paying full price for it. Overall, if you’re mature enough to find the violence funny and simply want something to play over a rainy weekend then you can do no wrong with Conan. Just make sure people nearby don’t hear the topless maidens cry out “My clothes! Where are my clothes!” every so often.

PlayStation 3ZTGameDomain (Oct 23, 2007)
Conan is not a terrible game, it certainly does not deserve the criticism it has received, but it is also a hard game to recommend to anyone with its $60 price tag. You could realistically finish it in a weekend making it more of a rental option than shelling out full price. However, if you are a fan of the lore (minus the ridiculous use of magic mind you) and you love the hack and slash genre then this game could easily be worth checking out. Just make sure you have a strong stomach as this could easily be the goriest game I have played in years.

PlayStation 3GameZone (Oct 30, 2007)
The game may do a bit of justice to the barbarian’s written history but more depth is needed to make this a viable game designed 70-odd years after the original story came out. The game has good and bad elements and after weighing them both, Conan comes out as a game that is entertaining, but could have been done much better.

Conan is an extremely tricky game to judge. On the one hand it's highly entertaining and almost obscenely violent and crude, but for a next-gen title with a next-gen price tag it doesn't quite deliver. By no means is this the perfect answer to the current lack of a next-gen God of War, but as something to tide you over, it serves its purpose better than anyone probably predicted.
70
PlayStation 3AceGamez (2007)
All in all, you know exactly what you are getting with Conan; a balls to the wall action game with little need for subtlety. This is big, brash and dumb as a bag of hammers, a relentlessly violent, uncompromising adventure that's fun from start to finish with a combat system that packs a visual punch as well as a technical one. It's unfortunate that the game will only last most players around six hours, with no multiplayer in sight, but it's been crafted with care and attention and, short of a few presentation issues, comes across as a solid, enjoyable package. Conan is no God of War, but then again, it really is more than happy to play the role of little brother - not quite as epic but infinitely more brutal and all the more fun for it. Put it this way - any game that has a dismemberment count at the end of each level has to be worth a look!

PlayStation 3GameSpy (Nov 07, 2007)
Like Heavenly Sword, Conan is an attempt to give next-gen gamers a God of War-like experience. The game delivers at times, but too often Conan comes across as Kratos-lite. The story is far from epic, but the violence is served up with enough eye candy and enough weapon variety to keep things from becoming too humdrum. It's going to be a while before Sony brings God of War to the PS3, but in the meantime, if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, the Gods must be feeling the love.
70
PlayStation 3GameDaily (Oct 23, 2007)
It's difficult to take offense, however, as you fire catapults at ships, set people's huts on fire and square off (and bludgeon) large beasts. Yeah, the game uses the archaic "hit that switch to activate that statue" template, and God of War fans will criticize THQ for copying Sony's franchise (right down to collecting glowing orbs), but Conan kicks a lot of ass and stands out as one of 2007's guiltiest pleasures, but as a rental. Its glitches and standard issue design make it unfit stand amongst the best action games. Just accept it for what it is, grab two axes and chop soldiers to ribbons. Do it for the ladies. Do it for country. Most importantly, do it for Crom.

Conan is an intense experience, and features some of the most visceral combat found in the industry. Oh Conan, you had me at topless girls and promptly lost me when the Cimmerian started using magic. This is as unashamedly a God of War rip-off as I have seen so far in gaming. That solicits a comparison between the two games; Conan doesn't fare well. God of War is a superior game in all facets. Even without the direct comparison -- even if you can pretend GoW never existed and this is somehow all new -- nothing is done exceptionally well. The graphics, the combat, the design, the sound are all just okay. With a final boss battle that is as painful as a trip to the proctologist, Conan is a game best rented for a one-day lark. It's certainly not worth spending $60 on.
67
Xbox 360Game Positive (Oct 30, 2007)
Conan is a solid, middle of the road type of game. If the God of War and Heavenly Sword style of games is what you like, then chances are, you will like this as well. It is not the most impressive game in the genre in any one category, but it also isn't particularly weak in any area either. For those who like their games bloody, this one has that in spades, as well as some nudity to boot. Given that this is such a short game, it becomes hard to recommend at the sixty dollar asking price. However, it's still a solid experience that should be looked into for at least a rental for fans of the genre.

PlayStation 3GamingExcellence (Jan 14, 2008)
While you could do much worse than picking up Conan, there are also better games out there. Since it clocks in at only six hours for a first play through the game barely lasts long enough to whet your video gaming whistle before it is over. If the obnoxious boss fights don't put you off then maybe you might desire to own it. While Conan is still a decent game, it's likely better off as a rental.

PlayStation 3Good Game (Oct 30, 2007)
Lacklustre voice acting and long loading times didn’t help it – I expected more from such a high profile game that was able to license both the Conan name and the Havok engine. 6/10 from me.

Conan is an unashamedly shallow game that does what most who will buy it expect of it by creating a non-stop rampage for action junkies. If you’re looking for more than just mindless action then you should probably look elsewhere. However, if mindless action sounds like your cup of tea then Conan should fit the bill; nonetheless there are better choices out there.

Conan plays like a God of War clone—intense combat coupled with button mashing exercises. There would be nothing wrong with this, but Conan lacks God of War’s Wow Moments. Even worse, Conan seems to intentionally reference God of War, which is just setting itself up for failure. I mean, in God of War, the first thing you fight is the Hydra. Conan’s mid-game Giant Squid boss is nothing in comparison.

PlayStation 3Game Revolution (Nov 20, 2007)
For the things that Conan gets right - big breasted naked lasses, blood and guts - it gets two things wrong - the use of magic, the god-awful voice acting. Otherwise, this is just another entry in the burgeoning God of War genre, neither offering anything in the way of innovation nor testing the limits of next-gen graphics. If you're a huge fan of the license, I'd say you could bump the final grade up a notch, because there is something to be said for playing a familiar game with a character you have a special affinity for - and let’s be honest, God of War is not a bad game to knock off. At the very least, you can run around as Conan for a few hours, like you dreamed of as a kid.

One's time with Conan isn't much shorter than with Kratos in his first adventure. As I mentioned before, I clocked in around six hours up to the point of the final encounter. Unfortunately I don't make enough money to replace a few controllers, so I quit playing. There isn't a lot of incentive, other than Achievements, to find all of the maidens, rune triumvirates, and treasure chests scattered throughout the experience because it's all over too quickly. Similarly, mastering attacks just doesn't offer much (if any) gratification. If you are really into Conan, or perhaps movies like Braveheart, you'll at least like parts of Conan. I don't recommend a purchase, but one wouldn't be losing out if one needed a game to occupy the doldrums that plague the summer season. For now, there are many better games to play.

With such a great world to draw inspiration from, and a proven action formula, it’s hard to go wrong, but they sure did. There are much better options in the action genre, and Conan will only last you a dismal 6 hours. 5/10

PlayStation 31UP (Oct 23, 2007)
Conan isn't really a horrible game. There are moments when all the flaws fade away and you'll experience a great animation that slows down at just the right times and chops off just the right heads and you'll start to think that the game is actually pretty fun, but it's all extremely straightforward and lacking a lot of polish. It's very much a surface-level game, without anything unique to make up for its shortcomings.

Conan started off with a good template, but for the few things they added like mastering moves or multiple weapons and their subsequent attacks, another core part of the combat was left unpatched. Letting enemies beat on you while your block window is closed until you’re a bloody pulp or laying endless unblockable attacks onto a character that lacks neither the agility nor the grace to combat enemies that seem built only to make players cuss like drunken sailors. Crom is not pleased.

What you play, you are going to like. You are going to be completely satisfied with the game. You are going to love all the nice little touches. But then you’re going to fight Graven. This will make you hate the game. And then you will wish you had never played it at all, ever. It takes a sharp and extremely difficult boss to shatter the illusion of fun, to help you break free from Conan’s spell and see the true game underneath. What you enjoyed was fighting the same three enemies a hundred times in several identical-looking levels.
