Conflict: Desert Storm II – Back to Baghdad shows that the Conflict series is quickly becoming the staple of Gotham Games. This game improves on its predecessor and makes for an even more enjoyable experience. If you can’t get enough of squad-based gameplay, this is for you.

Conflict: Desert Storm II: Back to Baghdad is the much-anticipated sequel to the 2002 inaugural release from Gotham Games, and probably one of the most engrossing and exciting military action games of 2003. The game has cleverly undergone a name change and has been released to coincide with certain current events to increase interest public awareness, but even without these clever marketing ploys Back to Baghdad stands up quite well on its own as a worthy successor. The extra three months of development time for the GameCube version has been well spent, and this is easily the best version of the game on any system.

A much improved sequel to a pretty good game. When the game was re-released for Gamecube, I thought of it highly enough to give it an 8.5. Granted, the Gamecube didn’t have a SOCOM to judge it against and Ghost Recon wasn’t all that great. In hindsight, the score was a bit too high. Conflict II improves on the original, making it even better.

With a score of 83%, Conflict Desert Storm II has some significant flaws. No multiplayer really kills the longevity, and the game frequently frustrates. You may bang on your keyboard more than once, but that also makes the rewards that the game has to offer that bit more special. It should be noted that this game is multi-platform, and the concessions in this regard are evident. There are some glitches with the controls and the AI, too. Desert Storm II can be a very engrossing and rewarding game when it wants to be, but often ends up giving you a gaming-hangover.

I think we can all agree that war is, at its heart, an abomination of humanity. It should be the last resort to resolve any differences as the physical and mental destruction it causes can take centuries to rebuild. Having said all that, there’s nothing like picking up a PS2 controller, invading a country and blowing the natives to bits in the name of patriotism, world protection, and upholding the peace (or whatever you’d like to call it) in the world of video games.

CDS2 is soms chaotisch, soms even frustrerend moeilijk, soms razend spectaculair en soms gewoon vermoeiend.

Judging by the more nitpicking correspondence received here, there must be at least some crossover between PC GAMER readers and listeners of Radio 4's midday complain-a-thon, You and Yours. Before these people get on their high horses, take umbrage and act all disgusted of Tunbridge Wells, they should know that Conflict Desert Storm II isn't a hasty cash-in based on the recent Iraq unpleasantness. Instead, it revisits the 1991 war - setting of the first game - so there's no statue-toppling mission, no shoe-on-poster action and none of that chaotic post-conflict scenario management to struggle with.

Before the recent war on Iraq, a different President Bush took US troops into the sweltering heat of a land run by a tyrant that threatens the very existence of thousands of innocent people. It is this conflict that has inspired Gotham Games to make a game based on the special forces of the USA that have come to put an end to Saddam’s chemical warfare program. In Conflict: Desert Storm II - Back to Baghdad, the mission continues. The question, though, is does this game deserve a sequel?

Sand. A single grain of it is approximately 64,000 times bigger than one of your body cells and it can be a bugger to get out of your ear after a day out at the beach. Other than that, it is pretty unremarkable. You can build pretty sandcastles out of it and wise men don't build houses on it - but other than that you wouldn't think twice about the yellow stuff. So it's a case of 'hats off' to developers Pivotal Games - they have managed to create two games based around 'beach pepper'. Conflict: Desert Storm was one of last year’s most popular games and with good reason. It was spankingly great.

There have been many different games based on War’s since games have been in development. The reason for this is that gamers have always been fascinated by history and what it might feel like to be in the midst of war; without actually doing it. Most games out there take place during War World I and II era, so Gotham Games decided to make a game that is based on a different era. Last year they released Conflict: Desert Storm, which took place a little over ten years ago during the Gulf War. The game released with mild success so they decided to create another game, and it takes place in the same era. Read on to find out more.

GameCubeIGN
Originally released for PlayStation 2, Xbox, and PC, Conflict: Desert Storm II: Back to Baghdad has finally made its way to GameCube. Though it may not be as timely as it once was, the sequel to last year's squad-based shooter helps fill an important niche on GameCube. With games like SOCOM II and Rainbow Six 3 occupying gamers on PS2 and Xbox both on- and offline, the lack of cooperative multiplayer shooters on GameCube made Desert Storm II a belated, but welcome addition to the lineup.

XboxIGN
Conflict: Desert Storm II: Back to Baghdad is the well-timed successor to the original tactical squad-based action game from last fall. This game was originally being called Conflict Desert Sabre, but a real life invasion of Iraq a few months ago provided a golden opportunity to work the word Baghdad into the title and capitalize on the world's fascination with Operation: Iraqi Freedom.

This game, however, takes place during the 1991 Gulf War and once again has players operating as either US Special Forces or British SAS operatives. There's no Saddam Hussein in either Conflict Desert Storm game, but the sequel offers up some technical enhancements, a few new moves and weapons, and even more of the hardcore tactical squad combat that made the original an underground favorite. In all honesty, not enough of what was wrong in the first game has been fixed to make this one a giant leap over its predecessor, but fans of the series will be pleased with the new missions and fresh features.

Dabei machen Sie all das, was Spezialkämpfer eben so machen: Soldaten abschießen, Basen infiltrieren, Knotenpunkte sprengen.

All right, soldier; are you ready for some butt-kicking, rocket-launching, team leading action? Sir, yes sir! Desert Storm II: Conflict in Baghdad is a squad based shooter full of 10 action packed missions ranging from reconnaissance missions to daring escapes that although have their perks, just don’t seem to have the polish of other squad based shooters. Although not a bad game by any means, unless you’re into squad shooters or military games, this may not be your kind of game. Overall, I think that this game is pretty good, and would be excellent if it had more time in the oven. I recommend it to die hard enthusiasts or people who like squad based action games, but otherwise make sure you rent this game first. Now drop and give me 20!

When I saw Desert Storm II at E3 in May, I was a little confused about whether or not they were trying to create a tactical battle simulator (ala the Tom Clancy games) or whether they were trying to create an arcade shooter (ala Syphon Filter). After playing the completed game here in October, I am still confused. Trying to cover both fronts, this enjoyable games falls short of being spectacular, which it easily could have been if only SCi and Pivotal had chosen one style. The old adage about the jack of all trades being the master of none certainly applies here.

My initial impression of Conflict Desert Storm II: Back to Baghdad could be summed up in a single word: crap. But after a few hours I realized that I was too hasty in my initial distaste for Gotham Games’ third-/first-person shooter. Underneath its tarnished exterior is a game that’s surprisingly engaging and intense.

So we wholeheartedly recommend Desert Storm 2, especially if you’ve always harboured vague ambitions to join the TA, if only you didn’t have to get off of your fat arse to do it. But we have to say this: it’s still a bit disquieting, “playing” through such a recent conflict which involved people we know. It seems a little unfair to cast the apparently oppressed soldiers as the enemy here. Mind you, in the Sonic The Hedgehog games all the enemies were brainwashed minions too. The difference: every time you shoot an Iraqi soldier, a smaller, cuter “unoppressed” version of that Iraqi soldier doesn’t appear and skip happily off the screen. Shame. But once you get used to the idea that US oil interests equal peace, justice and freedom, you’ll be popping off those Iraqis like so many bunnies. Altogether now: USA! USA!

Take Two recently acquired the rights to the next instalment in the Conflict series, Conflict: Vietnam, so it’s good to hear this won’t be the last tour of duty. It’s had a good run, particularly on the Xbox and GameCube platforms where there are few comparable titles. But the preceding year has turned the tables a bit. The trip back to Baghdad certainly doesn’t look as rosy as it might have seemed earlier on.

Conflict: Desert Storm II - Back to Baghdad is a third person action game that emphasizes squad level tactics between four operatives of the U.S. or British armies. Back to Baghdad is a follow-up that uses the same graphics engine as its predecessor. It manages to eliminate some but not all of the inconsistencies and annoyances from the former title.

2002's Conflict: Desert Storm gave players squad-based tactical action with a tie-in to modern military history. As you'd gather from the name, the game was set in the Middle East during the early 1990s' Operation: Desert Storm--the famed military action against Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait. Its current-events context notwithstanding, the first Conflict just wasn't very good. Just a year and a half later, we've received a direct sequel titled Conflict: Desert Storm II. The hasty release of a follow-up was no doubt spurred by the political and military events of the last year. However, the new Conflict is quite an improvement over the extremely shaky first game.

Truthfully, unless you’re starved for “tactical” action, there is little reason to buy Conflict: Desert Storm 2. While it is an improvement over the first one, the two games are largely identical and suffer from the same identity problem. The formula offers gamers a taste of both action and tactics, but neither tastes good enough for a second helping.

PlayStation 2Worth Playing
In hindsight, BTB’s failings are not that it is a bad game. What leaves BTB inadequate is that this game was good for two year old standards. As the PS2 grows long in the tooth, designers are left to get creative and squeeze every pixel and polygon out of the system. Next to the Xbox or Gamecube the PS2 lags in terms of sheer horsepower however there are still games being produced which continue to dazzle even a jaded gamer’s eye. BTB unfortunately does not stretch the PS2 to its limits in terms of graphics or playability. With other tactical shooters out there it is difficult for me to whole hearted recommend this game to anyone unless it was marked off at a bargain price because in the end that is what the buyer is left with: a game with bargain value design.

The original Conflict: Desert Storm laid a solid platform for what I thought could turn into the top team based franchise on the market. Unfortunately, the sequel fails to realise the potential it had. While efforts have obviously been made to make it prettier, the original's problems ran far deeper than that and as a result, we are left with yet another fun, minor game, that could have been right near the top of the heap had it addressed some game-play issues. Although the problems may seem minor in some ways, they just give the game a feeling of sloppiness. If you enjoyed the original, the sequel is basically more of the same, just a little more refined. If you hated the original continue to look elsewhere for your shooter fix.

In isolation, CDS II is a charming game with some baffling flaws that doesn't really justify its current No.1 billing. As a mission pack at a lower price we'd definitely recommend it on the basis of providing a quick fix to those who enjoyed the original, and be looking forward to a true sequel. But to release this as a standalone product at full price, providing too few enhancements over the original is not a policy we endorse. It's still an above average game, of that there is no doubt, but be aware of its shortcomings before you splash the £40.

GameCubeChrist Centered Game Reviews
All in all, Conflict is a fun game, especially in the co-op mode. Nonetheless it is very violent. The gameplay is at times a little cumbersome, and the graphics won't really wow you. Bottom line, morality sways the overall score... so in the end, Conflict: Desert Storm II gets a 6/10.

Gamers looking for a more forgiving alternative to the Tom Clancy series of games might want to check this out. Significantly less focused on realism, Conflict Desert Storm II instead looks toward providing more of a survey of various military missions and capabilities. Still, it's hard to offer an unequivocal recommendation as a Tom Clancy-lite type of game, because while it's more focused on action than simulation, it doesn't quite go far enough and fails to strike a balance, leaving the game as a whole lacking from either perspective.

Let me just get this out of the way; it is a bit creepy to play a game like this when there are real people getting shot at with real bullets half a world away. It made this game feel a bit voyeuristic and not in a good way. That being said (and I think it does need to be said), this is a solid tactical shooter that really shines as a multiplayer game.
60
PlayStation 2GameSpy
There are plenty of tactical shooters on the PS2, but few of them offer much in the way of a multiplayer experience. Quite simply, this is one of the best multiplayer games I have played in quite a while. Unfortunately, it is still far from perfect. The game suffers from drab graphics, sports an uneven and occasionally frustrating single-player mode, and has a general lack of polish. But the sheer fun of the sitting-on-the-couch-with-a-buddy gameplay more than makes up for those problems.

PlayStation 2GamePro (US)
Although this sequel could be easily mistaken for a tribute to the most recent battles in Iraq, Back to Baghdad instead continues its fight in the 1991 Gulf War. Unfortunately, like the first Conflict, this follow-up still retains the same clunky control scheme that should have ended this war before it even started.
55
PlayStation 2Game Critics
It's not a bad game by any stretch, and indeed the big guns of Tom Clancy's games could stand to learn a thing or two from the flexibility and depth of the squad command interface. But it still feels too much like the same game I played the first time, and with the vastly superior action in Rainbow Six 3 having evolved the tactical shooter on consoles, Back to Baghdad simply fades into the background as an also-ran.

Squad members can carry hundreds of pounds of gear and survive multiple shots to the chest, but they cannot walk over a pile of debris or out of a gully. Such movement limitations reduce the number of ways you can complete a task. Additionally, though there are two squads to choose from (Delta Force or SAS). their differences are minimal, further reducing replayability Throw in the occasional bugs that cause your soldiers to get stuck in corners or run in place, and you may think twice before signing on for this tour of duty.

The action works well in Conflict: Desert Storm II - Back to Baghdad but the whole game is run from script. If you see something at a certain point you will always see it at that point. The problems with the simple AI, a backpack the size of a Buick and vague objectives makes this game not much fun and causes it to not have much replay value.

Overall, you could do worse than this squad based warfare title. The point, however, is that you can do much better and this is a title that sets its sights for the middle of the pack and lands precisely there. That’s just not good enough.
