All in all, Contra Spirits is a magnificent, fun and incredibly polished game.

Check out Contra under whatever name you can find it. It's the business!

There really is nothing more to say, except the whole game's slick, professional, and well put together. Try as I might I can't find a major fault with it. If you like shoot-'em-ups, this is for you.

More than just a game, this is an all-singing, all-dancing, all-murder and mayhem experience you've just GOT to have and if I was one of Nintendo's rivals I'd poop my pants if I saw this. Contra Spirit is exactly the sort of game console freaks have been waiting for - and this cart more than delivers. Grab this one a bit quicker and remember to thank CVG for telling you all about it!

As one of the better shoot-em-ups for the SNES, this game has it all! One or two players can blast their way through six harrowing missions to save the planet from invading aliens. Besides firing at everything that moves, you'll leap over fireballs, hang from rails, and perform death-defying somersaults. You're also equipped with a few smart bombs, and can even commandeer tanks and plow right through those alien bastards. Although mainly a side scroller, two missions offer an overhead view, providing a nice change of pace. The bosses look absolutely disgusting. Contra's controls take a bit of getting used to at first, especially when it comes to dropping to the ground. The game offers a few continues, but no passwords, so your journey is going to be a long one. But at least with Alien Wars, you know it's worth the effort.

The graphics are a large improvement over the NES (obviously) with medium-sized, colourful and well animated sprites amid atmospheric backdrops. The music is quite satisfying and is some of the best I have ever heard on a Snes cart, shame about the sound effects, while although they are satisfying, they lack the oomph of some games (like Blackthorne / Blackhawk's meaty shotgun.) It is quite hard compared to some games and lacks any sort of password/battery backup system, so if you want to beat it, be prepared for a fairly long sitting (or standing, or lying down, whatever) session.

The controls in Contra III are perfection. The players are very manoeuvrable and can hang on to railings, grapple up walls, dual wield weapons and somersault through the air to avoid oncoming attacks. There is no doubt this game is better played on the Wii’s classic controller which models the SNES controller layout. The Gamecube controller feels a bit clunky with its button layout. The visuals work really well in this game. The detail in the backdrops is outstanding for a game of this era, the sprites still look good today and the special effects still impress. The musical score is amazing too, it becomes instantly very memorable and the tension really builds up during boss fights.

If you are a fan of the original Contra you should definitely head down to your local used game shop and pick this one up. If not, maybe you should try this one. The added features of two guns, nukes, and variable difficulties really make this installment better than the games before it. Be sure to leave this one be if you have anger management problems.

The hard skillsetting will give stubborn players something to do the nearest month or so! I can´t praise this game enough so that this review doesn´t end up in a mess of different superlatives like superb, great and brilliant I will just end the review by saying that if you don´t have anything against brilliant platform/action games then go get this game!!

Another Contra game that won't let you down. Lots and lots of fun for gamers on the go. Put the game on "Maniac" mode and go for it. Just run, jump and shoot...shoot like the dickens. Shoot robots and monsters, blow up buildings and watch out for stuff like hot lava on the ground. Unfortunately, you don't have the option of choosing a character, so you can't play as a girl or a robot the way you can in Contra: Hard Corps on the Genesis.

Contra III is fast paced, fun and exciting. This title is so action packed you can barely stop to breathe. While the "easy" setting is pretty simple, the higher difficulty levels provide more than formidible opposition. With the extensive use of the SNES's scaling and rotation abilities, the graphics are incredible. The soundtrack has bass so heavy you can feel the floor rumble. This game absolutely kicks!

WiiGaming Target
For fans of side scrolling shooters or Contra devotees, Contra III: The Alien Wars is a must have addition to the Virtual Console. At only six levels, it’s a bit on the short side, but it offers plenty of challenge and plenty of action for even the most hardened gamers. It’s a steal at 800 Wii Points.

It's a nicely evolved title, with new abilities and small tweaks to the formula that improve the gameplay in big ways - being able to hold down the fire button for automatic fire is an absolute lifesaver - and for those with the patience to learn its patterns and face its challenge, it's a solid addition to the VC line-up.

Contra for the Game Boy is a real delight! Action/adventure games don't get much hotter. If you're looking to dust off your Game Boy, Contra is the reason!

It's hard to express in words the excellence of this game, pure enjoyment from the very first level, to the very last boss. You just have to play this for yourself, NOW.

SNESDigital Press - Classic Video Games
Where Contra III isa bit weak isin the SNES slowdown department. It's not Konami's fault - in fact, they did remarkably well considering the amount of movement on the screen at any given time. When setting off a bomb during gameplay, however, the action practically comes to a stop. Explosions of large objects slow the action down as well. If other game designers follow Konami's lead, the future of SNES software looks very bright. I count three winners already, and I'd bet their best is yet to come.

WiiIGN
Contra III proves that priorities have shifted in the industry over the past 15 years – for a new title to ship with only six levels today would be laughable. But the six levels that are here are jam-packed, focused and a lot of fun, especially when played together with a friend. They're also tough as nails, especially on the more extreme difficulty settings, so getting through to the end may take a lot of trial, error and repetition of the same half-dozen stages. If you don't mind a shorter shooter and aren't frustrated by a true challenge, cash in your Wii Points – 800 will get you a ticket to a war-torn tomorrow. (But not 30 lives when you get there.)

Whoa, look out! I never expected that a Game Boy could match the Super NES version so closely. All the enemies, levels and special effects, like the scaling jet in the first level are faithfully reproduced. The attention to detail is great and the bosses are just as challenging here as they are in 16-bit. Game Boy owners, you're in for a treat with this one. Konami pulled out all the stops to create a winner.

Super Game Boy compatibility adds a small splash of color and passwords after each level keep you from repeating charted territory again and again, but shooter fans won't find much here to test their skill. The game's brevity and simplicity might make it a nice introduction to the shoot-em-up genre for younger, less experienced gamers, though.
