As you can see, the 'Norns' are also stomach-churningly cute. Don't let that put you off. Creatures is the most enchanting program I've seen in years. I'll repeat my earlier point - how much you get out of it is up to you. Do bear this in mind when you look at the rating I've given it, which reflects my gut reaction. I'm not the soppy type (I rooted for Scar in The Lion King), yet I think I'm in love with my 'Norns'. Which is more than I can say for most people. Scary? Slightly. Spellbinding? Completely.

More of a toy than a game, Creatures is an extremely entertaining program that will keep you amused for a long time. A lot of care was taken to ensure that the Norns react like a true life form, and it succeeds admirably. Norns are fun to teach and play with, and their intelligence will amaze you. Bottom Line: Extremely complex artificial life simulation. Norns are cute, smart, and will amuse you for quite some time. Word balloons and Norns sometimes overlap on the screen, making it difficult to do exactly what you want. Sometimes Norns need a little too much micromanagement.

Wer plant, einmal Kinder in die Welt zu setzen, sollte mit diesem Programm unbedingt üben. Es läßt sich wunderbar erahnen, wie nervenaufreibend es sein kann, einem Kind die Welt zu erklären, während der verspielte Bruder ständig ablenkt. Auf wundersame Weise läßt Creatures den Spieler um das Leben erkrankter Norns bangen, man freut sich wie ein stolzer Vater über die Entwicklung seiner wenige Minuten alten Jüngsten, und es wird einem klamm uns Herz, wenn ein altgedienter Greis mit einem herzzerreißenden Seufzer sein Leben aushaucht. Creatures ist sicherlich eines der interessantesten Konzepte im Bereich der Unterhaltungssoftware, auch wenn es so manche moralische Frage aufwerfen dürfte.

For someone who is interested in applying Genetics, DNA and Chemistry to their gaming experience, Creatures is an outstanding title. For any game player who is questioning his level of interest in these subjects, make certain that you purchase Creatures with your eyes open. I predict that the nature of this title will lead to many die-hard players producing and distributing their own applets, creating a kind of continual, unlimited support mechanism for this product. This sort of game cries out for the release of a strategy guide, and although I have no idea if one is planned or not, I would certainly find it to be interesting reading. With a few improvements to controlling the creatures of this world, Creatures is something that I could conceivably have running in the Win95 background for months to come.

Creatures uses the best artificial intelligence I have seen (at least in the form of a game) and is a terrific new concept. If you are dedicated and patient, you will soon be breeding generations of Norns and discovering new Norns with characteristics that have never been seen before. I got a lot of satisfaction out of seeing these Norms living an enjoyable life and also having the knowledge that I allowed all of that to happen. Not everything was perfect. I spent a lot of time gritting my teeth due to complications experienced. (For example I couldn't get one of my Norns to do anything. She just wouldn't respond. A genetic dud.) Nevertheless, I enjoyed many hours with the Norms' life in my hands.

La plupart des joueurs seront curieux de découvrir comment faire évoluer leurs propres créatures, et les plus jeunes risquent d'être happés par le concept de cette vie artificielle. Les moins patients n'y trouveront, par contre, qu'ennui et exaspération.

Un titre sympathique et destiné à tous les publics. Les plus jeunes découvriront un jeu amusant dans un environnement chaud et coloré alors que les plus grands se lanceront dans l'éducation intensive de leur Norns en passant de nombreuses heures devant leur écran.

Tillhör du kategorin spelare som efter att tålmodigt och noga byggt upp en stad i Sim City 2000 till slut inte kan låta bli bulldozern och katastroferna när allt känns färdigt? Då är nog Crearures inte för dig. Tillhör du däremot den typ av spelare som älskar spel som "aldrig" tar slut, ja då är detta helt klart något för dig. I vilket fall som helst så bjuder Creatures på en unik spelupplevelse och jag hoppas det banar väg för kommande titlar i samma genre.

What we end up with is a really neat technology driving an entirely medicore product. The interface hates people, the Norns can care less about you, and Grendels find you ineffective. What you'll feel is frustration. The one hope is the Internet. There're a bunch of Creatures sites on the net, and many of them have lots of Norns to download, plus utilities to help you interact with the environment. And some perverse individuals have even bred Grendel and Norns together. Download a handful of adult Norns to get a population growing, and you'll have a great cyber-fishtank. Buy Creatures if you're curious about a-life and the very cool technology behind the product, or as a great screensaver. Don't buy it as something with which you expect to have lots of interaction.

Creatures is a great idea for computer entertainment. Its premise and objectives are original and well thought out. It is a shame, however, that the technical aspect of such a game be the cause of its downfall. Cutting costs is one thing, but destroying game play and game speed due to poor development for the Mac platform will seldom get you good ratings, nor will it sell Mac games. It is unfortunate that Creatures' enjoyable game play cannot make up for its poor coding.

Let us not write Creatures off entirely. Should the developers really push hard and re-do the learning, making the associations easier, I could get lost in this game. As Creatures stands now, however, it ranks with the dregs of Maxis' bad Sim-style games. You feel like you are watching a fishbowl and, despite your efforts, you really are not having any effect at all.
