Crimson Skies

Crimson Skies is a definite gem of a game. With no major problems and a high level of fun, this flight sim may have the effect of revitalizing the market. I haven’t had so much fun with a flight sim since Red Baron. I wholeheartedly recommend this game to all people in search of a good flight sim - or just a chance to be a daredevil pilot.

While suffering from some initial problems with a repetitive soundtrack and audio related performance issues, Crimson Skies makes up for it with strong and unique gameplay, detailed graphics, and a 1930's feeling that just won't quit. All of you Rocketeer fans out there better sit up and take notice, this is the closest you'll ever get.

Okay, when I say pirates, what's the first thing that comes to your mind? Chances are, you just pictured the skull and crossbones, some dude that looks like Captain Hook, or even that drunk guy hanging out with a pig in the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland. But what if the path of history took a different course and pirates turned out to be smooth talking, fearless warriors of the air rather than liquor-guzzling sea ruffians? Well, Microsoft and Zipper Interactive have imagined just that and cranked out a game worthy of an old Hollywood studio.

A final reminder: Flight sim enthusiasts, either temporarily forget your quest for the perfect flight model or go elsewhere. The rest of you, don’t pass up this title. Crimson Skies puts gameplay first and realism second, and the end result is one of the most playable free-flying objective-based action games since the classic TIE Fighter. Undoubtedly one of the best releases of 2000, Crimson Skies will provide hours of thrills, spills, and the occasional erased save-game (patch before you get anywhere!). With a fast-paced storyline, a strong atmosphere, intense gameplay and a high fun factor, the only thing Crimson Skies needs to make me happy is a sequel.

Значимо лишь то, что у игры есть абсолютно уникальный стиль. Все эти причудливые самолеты, дирижабли, отрывки из газет в межмиссионых экранах, свинговый саундтрек и черно-белая фотография красотки в каюте главного героя образуют целостную, неповторимую картину “другой” Америки тридцатых годов. Последний раз такое было, кажется, в Interstate’76. То есть двадц… простите, три с лишним года назад.

From all things mentioned, you can but draw a conclusion that the game is great. But, it just happens to be one of those games (one of those many games) that got released unfinished. Crimson Skies is in a bad need of a patch. First, while loading the missions, you can detect a slowdown in the whole system, and you can experience a system crash. If you "survive" the mission loading, it will play without problems. But this is not the main problem; the worst thing is that the game erases your saved games during the campaign for no apparent reason. This has something to do with the way the save-games are stored. It sometimes happens that a saved game gets deleted when the player creates a plane for single player or multiplayer missions. The elements of flight simulation in Crimson Skies in combination with a lot of shooting and a lot of acrobatics, all wrapped in a cute story promise a great game, but the general feel of the game will be ruined if the patch doesn't appear soon.

What the hell happened? After getting my hopes up about this game, I've been disappointed by the reliability of the released version. My opinion has changed a little bit since I posted my First Impressions last Monday and although I still love the game, some gamers (including me) have been experiencing a minor but admitedly annoying bug that corrupts their saved game data.

The second Crimson Skies was up and running, I started enjoying myself immensely. All you need to know is where the trigger and throttle buttons are and you’re ready to go. Missions are well put together with plenty of brief real-time cutscenes to let the player know exactly what their next objective is and what it looks like. The game’s chief asset is its ambience and character. Whether you’re in the middle of a mission or loading a plane up with new ordinance, the game is brimming with audio and period artwork, and all the stereotypical characters you’d expect from a ‘30s radio serial. The terrain texturing could have used some work, but who cares? All but the most realism-bent flight sim fanatics will love this game. People with older machines should beware, however. Despite the game’s relatively low graphic detail, it demands a high-end PC.

Ein Spiel, das man einfach lieben muss. Ob nun ein schnelles Gefecht oder die ganze Kampagne, ganz egal, es macht einen Heidenspaß mit der Flugkiste in die Luft zu gehen und eine Mission nach der anderen zu fliegen. Der „nur noch eine Mission"-Virus hat mich voll erwischt. Alles in allem ein Spiel, das die Bezeichnung Top verdient.

Wahnsinn! Welch grandiose Luftkämpfe! Mit dem Seitenruder bleiben Sie an fast jedem Jäger dran oder fliegen die krassesten Manöver - ich habe etwa einen Zug überholt. In einem Eisenbahntunnel, wohlgemerkt.

Mais le revers de la médaille peut s'avérer bien lourd. Surtout quand on ne prend pas le temps de paufiner ses jeux... Il reste ainsi quelques bugs il est vrai dans Crimson Skies. Les menus par exemple sont très très lourds, forçant des chargements bien trop longs ou des longueurs inexpliquées. Pareil pour les différentes interfaces qui vont sûrement alourdir encore le phénomène sur les plus petites configurations. La version américaine possédait en plus un bug qui écrasait les sauvegardes aléatoirement, je vous laisse imaginer les dégâts quand vous êtes à 2 missions de la fin... Je n'ai pas eu l'horreur de voir ce bug dans la version française testée et j'espère qu'il aura été corrigé...

Crimson Skies er en fis og ballade version af Combat Fighter Simulatoren, og byder på mange fornøjelige timer. Det er ikke dedikeret til hardcore-flyfolket, ej heller til det rene action-publikum. Spillet er simpelthen beregnet til dem der kan lide at flyve uden at tage hele tastaturet i brug, og dem der bare kan lide et rigtigt godt shoot-'em-up - og dem er der jo, vor herre bevares, nogle stykker af.

If you have a nice system, and you like flight sims, pick up Crimson Skies. If you have a mediocre system (like mine), and like flight sims, get an upgrade, then get Crimson Skies.

Pour les amateurs de combats aériens avides de simulation savamment équilibrée avec l'action défoulante, Crimson Skies est un must ! Tous ceux qui ont toujours rêvé de pilotages virtuels d'avion à hélices sans jamais avoir osé passer le cap du briefing, Crimson Skies constitue le pas à franchir absolument. Avec son univers "années 40" déjanté, ses missions intenses et variées, sa jouabilité hors-pair, et ses graphismes 3D exceptionnels, Crimson Skies tient vraiment toutes ses promesses, faisant presque oublier ses quelques bugs fâcheux, et la configuration PC plus soutenue que la moyenne requise pour en profiter. Microsoft, en gardant tous les éléments indispensables à une simulation tout en édulcorant les aspects les plus rébarbatifs, signe ici un spectacle aérien très réussi et à la portée de tous.

I really enjoyed this game and can recommend it to anyone who likes flying combat Sims. Even the multiplayer is fun which has the basic types: Deathmatch, capture the flag and defend your Zeppelin. In each type, there is a refuel station that once you fly through, all damage is repaired and all ammo is replenished.

I’ll be honest with you. I’m not a real fan of flight simulators and here’s why: Most of the time, I find myself grappling with keyboard or joystick controls, both in configuration and execution. Rather than shooting the enemy right to the next century, I struggle haplessly with a hundred and one buttons and notches.

Se déroulant dans un monde librement inspiré des années trente où l’aviation connait un essor florissant, Crimson Skies fait partie des dogfights les plus incontournables de toute l’histoire du jeu vidéo. Retour, à l’occasion de ce nouveau test, sur ce titre très axé arcade, fruit de l’imagination débridée des créateurs de MechWarrior.

The colors are bright, and the effect is in keeping with the story, as it all seems larger than life. Crimson Skies uses the variety of locales to keep the gameplay fresh, and when combined with the story, it's enough to push you through the game without ever slowing down.

Since the latest titles from Microsoft weren't all that good, and the beta version of Crimson Skies didn't work on my computer (it made my pc crash) I wasn't all in favor of testing this game. To my surprise, however, I did like it (and I'm in no way a flightsim lover).

Crimson Skies, apesar de toda a sua aparência de simulador de vôo, já que os heróis entram em ação a bordo de máquinas voadoras, tende mais para o lado dos arcades, não obrigando o jogador a ter de passar noites em claro estudando aerodinâmica e centenas de teclas para ativar cada parte do avião. Para exemplificar melhor, será que você se lembra de um game pré-jurássico chamado Afterbunner? Sim, aquele que os velhos TK-90s e MSXs rodavam com uma pobreza gigantesca de requintes gráficos, mas que faziam os jogadores passaram horas e mais horas brincando de Top Gun. O novo game da Microsoft é mais ou menos assim. Pelo menos no conceito. Mas, antes de pré-julgar Crinson Skies, o que pode ser um pecado capital, é muito importante conhecer seus pontos fortes.

Schraubengenaue Simulationen mit Anleitungen im Telefonbuchformat sind Ihnen ein Graus? Dann ist Crimson Skies genau die Simulation, auf die Sie gewartet haben. Amerika in den späten 30er-Jahren: Die einst große Nation hat sich von der Wirtschaftskrise mehr schlecht als recht erholt und ist in mehrere unabhängige Kleinstaaten zerfallen. Seither herrscht Chaos am Himmel über dem amerikanischen Kontinent: Geldgierige Luftpiraten und ruchlose Söldnergeschwader verkaufen ihre Dienste an den Meistbietenden und liefern sich erbitterte Privatkriege.

Ja, genau so muss es sein! Crimson Skies macht einen Heidenspaß, ohne zum fliegerischen Leichtgewicht zu verkommen. Klar, die Maschinen kann man leicht in der Luft halten, doch nur solange einem kein Gegner im Nacken sitzt. Trotz einer gewissen Übungsphase stören mich aber auch Abschüsse nur wenig – umso motivierter starte ich den zweiten Versuch. Dafür sorgen die spannenden Missionsziele und eine Story, die immer wieder für eine Überraschung gut ist. Oder hätten Sie geglaubt, dass ein U-Boot auch als Flugzeugrampe dienen kann? Die schöne Grafik vergisst man fast dabei. Schade nur, dass Crimson Skies ein wenig zu kurz geraten ist. Geübte Piloten werden selbst auf dem höchsten Schwierigkeitsgrad spätestens nach einem Wochenende den Abspann sehen. Doch bis dahin werden sie exzellent unterhalten. Wer auf Action-lastige Fliegerei steht, sollte unbedingt zuschlagen
