This and Pulstar rank as the best (and most difficult) 2-D shooters ever. The standard 26 alphabetical levels, some of the most spectacular sights ever seen in a game and very good if...uh...difficult music combine to bring you utter shooting satisfaction. This, by the way, IS the arcade game. The only difference is slightly less animation on the bosses, but it isn't something you'll notice.

El atractivo innato de los matamarcianos se basa en su sencillez de manejo y en la descarga de adrenalina que provocan. Unos buenos gráficos, un planteamiento original, la inclusión de items y la opción de dos jugadores simultáneos añaden interés a las bazas básicas del juego. Y eso es lo que se puede decir de «Darius Gaiden», que ha sabido combinar con maestría todos esos elementos para atraer y divertir a cualquier jugador habilidoso.

The colorful fish-themed graphics serve up enormous bosses and wild, detailed backgrounds. The eye-popping smart-bombs explosion displays impressive graphical prowess, but the action frequently slows down when things get too busy. On the sound side, CD-quality tunes nice pace the action, but the flat effects never take off. Completing every level of Gaiden will pose a formidable, enjoyable challenge to hardcore shooter fans. A weekend rental, however, will satisfy the less fanatical.

Darius Gaiden on the Saturn is arguably the best home conversion of the game available to date. That's including the more recent Taito Memories Joukan version that uses filtered and upscaled graphics, something that seems to bother a lot of people. Along with Layer Section, Darius Gaiden is one of the cheapest 2D shooters you can import. It's also one of the few shooters that got an American release (turns out there is something we can thank Acclaim for.) Which ever route you choose, Darius Gaiden is sure not to disappoint.

The backgrounds aren't very impressive but there are some eye-catching explosions. And even when there's a lot of action on screen, it's not too difficult to tell what's going on (a problem with many other modern shooters). Two people can play at the same time, which is always a nice feature. After completing a stage, you can choose your next stage, which provides some decent replay value. If Darius Gaiden has a weakness, it might be the music. These opera-style tunes just don't get my adrenaline pumping. But overall this is a solid shooter.

Okay, so it’s not a particularly impressive game by today’s standards, but as a value title Darius Gaiden delivers. For a $9.99 MSRP (we found it online for as little as $4), you get 28 levels with branching paths and ridiculously complicated level bosses to keep things interesting. The game is playable in multiplayer mode on the same keyboard, and it runs just fine off of any old Pentium machine. For fans of the old-school side-scrollers or folks who don’t mind dropping less than the price of a movie ticket for a fast, fun, brainless diversion, Darius Gaiden is a great buy.

Not just another shooter, Darius Gaiden features some of the most unusual-looking graphics ever seen, especially the backgrounds. The control is good, but even when playing in the Two-player Mode, the enemies became very difficult to beat. An average player will be looking for a level select to make it past the six or seven levels. The music score is unlike anything I've ever heard before in a game of this type. It's almost soothing. A solid game that will not be beaten in one sitting.

When I play a shooter, I look for one thing: mass destruction. I want to see nuclear bombs thrown with the casualness of firecrackers, I want to see my enemies wiped off the face of the map like so much dust and Darius Gaiden delivers the goods.

Darius Gaiden doesn't seem like much to begin with, but it grows on you. Multiple paths help to keep it from getting boring and the variety of enemies and weapons help also. In the end you may end up playing Darius Gaiden much more than many games you thought were better.

Acclaim hat mit der innovationsarmen Bolzerei Darius Gaiden leider nicht die guten Hardware Vorraussetzungen von Segas CD-Schleuder ausgenutzt, dies wird vor allem bei der Farbpallette sehr deutlich. Lediglich bei den schuppigen Endgegnern strengte man sich an, diese möglichst realistisch zu animieren und mit guten Zoomeffekten zu versehen. Glücklicherweise wurde die Fischsuppe noch durch 14 rockige Backgroundsounds, die zu jedem Level gut passen, gewürzt und die mir persönlich so gut gefielen, daß ich den Saturn als normalen CD-Player “mißbrauchte“. Im Gegensatz dazu gab sich der Hersteller bei der Gestaltung der Feinde keine sonderliche Mühe. Diese sind manchmal so in der Überzahl, daß man ins Gras beißen muß, es sei denn, man zündet eine von den begrenzt verfügbaren Superbomben. Fazit: Darius Gaiden ist eine solide Ballerei für hartgesottene Genrefreaks, bei der besonders der Soundtrack zu gefallen weiß.

Darius Gaiden ist solider Ballerspielspaß mit kleinen Schönheitsfehlern. Die zahlreichen Unter/Oberwasserlandschaften sind zwar wesentlich abwechslungsreicher als bei den Vorgängern, aber ansonsten unterscheidet sich das Spiel nicht wesentlich vom Originalkonzept. Schwierigkeitsgrad und Soundeffekte sind so hart und deftig, wie es jeder Viewpoint-Pilot liebt. Ein dickes Lob gebührt den Grafikern, deren altgedienten Pixelkünsten wir wieder tolle Hintergründe und farbenfrohe Riesensprites verdanken. Als zeitgemäß kann man Taitos neueste 32-Bit-Errungenschaft auf keinen Fall bezeichnen. Betrachtet man Darius Gaiden alleine, präsentiert es sich als gut durchdachtes Shoot‘em-Up. Von den vielen Extras bis hin zu den gigantischen Oberschurken am Ende jedes Levels -Action-Freunde kommen voll auf ihre Kosten. Es darf geballert werden, bis der Feuerknopf schmilzt. Für Fans des Genres ein feiner Happen, alle anderen sollten vor dem Kauf einen längeren Blick auf die Ballerei werfen.
