Dark Signs is a hacking game that simulates a network environment where the player must hack different servers in order to complete different assignments, such as retrieving, decrypting and manipulating data.

The game interface is largely text-based, and the player must use the game's scripting language D-SCRIPT to run commands or, in some cases, to write longer scripts.

The core gameplay consist in scanning the simulated network server ports for vulnerabilities and exploiting them, using various simulated online tools and visiting various newsgroups to read about vulnerabilities in the simulated server software.

As the game progresses, the hacking tasks become more difficult, and the player will have to combine bits of knowledge learned in earlier missions in order to complete the later missions.
