DescriptionDark Tales: Edgar Allan Poe's The Premature Burial is the third game in the Dark Tales series where the player must assist the renowned detective Dupin in covering another mystery. The story and title are derivatives taken from the actual ‘The Premature Burial’ written by Edgar Allan Poe published 1844. It plays on the horror and fear of incorrectly being presumed dead and being buried alive.
As with the stories before the time line is based in Victorian Europe and the detective Dupin is responding to a rather desperate request for his services. The man in distress needing his services is Julien who has lost the love of his life Victorine. The details are rather vague that surround her death which only amplify the mystery and Julien’s pain and suffering. Victorine unfortunately for Julien was already married to a wealthy gentleman that upon her death was buried in secret. Julien needs your help to find her final resting place so he can pay his last respects to gain closure or he will commit suicide himself from grief. Adding to the twist and turns while assisting the detective you are beset by a dark haired woman appearing as an apparition who speaks of revenge.
The player interface and game mechanics provide a hybrid approach of graphical adventure with on screen movement touch points, puzzles and hidden-object search style game play. Objects collected in inventory at the bottom of the screen require the player to drop or drag them onto other items in the scenes to activate or complete needed tasks for progression. Hidden object scenes are somewhat traditional with word objects at the bottom. Some scene objects must be opened, moved or used to finally reveal the object to be found. Objects requiring this function are listed in a different colored text.
