Dark Vengeance was an above average game because of its fun gameplay and nice graphics. While there were specific things that did hinder play, like the 3rd person view, everything was fun and enjoyable. While it probably won't be voted best game of the year, it isn't a bad game at all. The bottom line is that if you like Heretic II and Tomb Raider, and you love medieval combat, then this is the game for you.

Dark Vengeance puts a tight package in to the sort of bombed third person dungeon hack genre. It has some big flaws and some nice features. It also is pretty entertaining. I'd have to definitely recommend this to anyone who liked Deathtrap Dungeon and Die By The Sword and hasn't been totally tarnished by Heretic II.

The story in Dark Vengeance just gets better as the game progresses, which is rare in action-based titles. Like a good book, the further you get into Dark Vengeance, the more interesting it becomes. It's this feature that sets it apart from comparable games such as Unreal.

If you prefer traditional first-person shooters, Dark Vengeance is probably not for you; this is not a run-down-the-hall-blasting-everything-that-moves sort of game. DV needs a carefulness -- a purposefulness -- that isn't required in most of that category. Players of Tomb Raider or Myth should probably get along with it if they don't find the interface too obstructing.

Dark Vengeance isn't a bad game, but it doesn't do anything new and doesn't really provide any compelling reason for playing it, except for the enemies and the graphics. The three different characters provide depth of gameplay via their unique weapons and power-ups, but there is neither a compelling story nor innovative level design to keep this game interesting. Even the graphics, which are good, are still not state-of-the-art. Play it if you like games in the Tomb Raider style of deliberate exploration and combat, but don't expect to be too impressed.

Since the original Tomb Raider shipped, the third-person shooter has been coming into its own as a genre. While it's nice to see the action as if it were through your own eyes, sometimes it's pretty cool to be able to see your character go through the complex motions of running, fighting and jumping. Unfortunately Reality Bites' latest third-person action title, Dark Vengeance, shows us that too much of a good thing can be very damaging to a otherwise solid game.

Reality Bytes, a long time Mac developer, has recently released their latest title, Dark Vengeance, a graphically stunning dungeon crawler with poor control and a terrible camera. In Dark Vengeance players get to do what they usually do, run around a massive dungeon hacking enemies to bits with fantastic weaponry and magic. While the came embraces the usual dungeon crawling play mechanics, it does have a few unique twists that attempt to set it apart from its fantasy brethren while succumbing to many of the genre's worst flaws.

While Dark Vengeance shouldn’t be at the top of anyone’s wish list, it does provide some light entertainment, a few laughs, and maybe even enough interest to play through three times with each different main character. If you can get it for a deal you’ll get your money’s worth and you won’t feel like extracting any Dark Vengeance on the salesman.

Unfortunately, the game play lets the side down. Dark Vengeance rapidly deteriorates into a hit monster, pick up key, open door, hit another monster affair, with little originality. While the Quake-like multiplayer option adds the prospect of some longevity - human opponents always make games more interesting - Dark Vengeance does nothing that hasn't already been done before.

The bottom line is that Dark Vengeance, a rushed and underdeveloped game, just doesn't hold up in today's crowded marketplace. Even with impressive graphical effects, notable depth, and multiplayer support, it is still apparent that the entire game could have used another year in developement. Those desperately in need of a third-person action game would be happier with either Heretic 2 or even Tomb Raider 3.

WindowsAdrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
This is a good game ravaged by severe problems. The core design concepts and execution are great; the story is engaging, the graphics are attractive, the characters are unique enough to sanction replayability, and the melee-based combat is unwaveringly intense. Coursing through the channels of the game, though, is an engine that is unable to coalesce these elements into a consistently entertaining experience and a sluggish camera that sabotages the gameplay. Dark Vengeance is acutely disappointing because so much promise lights it corridors.

Drei Helden mit unterschiedlicher
Spielweise, halbwegs schmucke Grafik
und stimmungsvolle Fantasy-Dungeons: Aus Dark Vengeance hätte
mehr werden können. Mir macht
es aber keinen Spaß, wegen der verunglückten
Kameraführung ständig
nicht sichtbare Gegner zu verkloppen
oder im Wirrwar der Polygone
meinen verschollene Helden zu
suchen – stehe ich noch in der Wand
oder schon im nächsten Raum?
