Darkstone contains a veritable treasure-trove of other features such as generously creepy sound effects, heart-rending cries for help when your co-companion needs help, a haunting and effective music track (be sure to give the balladeers in town a few gold pieces, then just sit back, close you eyes and enjoy), supremely enjoyable multi-player action, incredibly deep quests and integrated puzzle-solving (such as stringing events and knowledge together to complete a sub-quest). I don't throw recommendations around lightly -- but if you're a big RPG fan like me, you owe it to yourself to grab this one.

Giving fantasy roleplaying a much-needed update while remaining true to the genre's conventions, Darkstone kicks ass.

This action/RPG title owes a lot to Diablo ... a whole lot. Did I mention Diablo?

Other than the few bugs I mentioned, there's really nothing wrong with Darkstone. In fact, it has some really great features. The graphics are great, the story is reasonably interesting. I especially enjoyed finding a game I could sit down and play for a hour or two, (rather than a true RPG that sucks away my every waking moment for weeks), but that still has a bit more to it than just hack-and-slash. But, somehow, there just seems to be something missing. And it's hard to shake that "I've done this before" feeling. At first, I was quite puzzled by the latest Darkstone ads with their assertions that "The first worthy successor to Diablo is not Diablo II. It's Darkstone," and "It will take your mind entirely off Diablo II." I mean, that practically begs for comparisons to be drawn. Of course, not every game can be a classic that is played for years and years, but was Delphine Software's only goal really to make a stop-gap game, a sort of temporary fix for the Diablo addicts out there?

Darkstone essentially takes Diablo a few steps further, which can only be a good thing, right?

Dark Stone is a diamond in the rough. Not without it\'s problems, but with plenty of action to spare. With a solid control interface and plenty of quest-hacking adventuring to offer, the good outweigh the bad and the game is well worth looking at. If you pick this one up, be prepared to spend some time with it.

Fantasy hack-and-slash just can't be beat for relaxed recreation. However, the game does get dull after so many levels of the same thing over and over. Yes, the levels and quests are randomly generated each new game, but the manner of play gets old after 20 levels or so. I find myself playing this game bulimically. I binge on it for several days, enjoying myself thoroughly, then I have to lay it aside because I've gotten bored. But my cravings bring me back after a while. Pick this game up if you like Diablo, mindless slaying of orcs, or just can't wait to wield that magic left mouse button in battle. You won't be sorry.

WindowsGame Over Online
In conclusion, Darkstone is a fun hack n' slash game that takes Diablo, adds a nice 3d engine, the ability to play as 2 characters in single play, a few other nice touches, and ends up with a fun and enjoyable game. While it doesn't break any new ground, it is a fun game that should keep you interested for a decent amount of time. I must admit, if I was to see this game without knowing anything about it, I would call it Diablo 2 or maybe Diablo 3d. However, they did a good job ripping off Diablo, and it's not like there are millions of other clones to group it with. Another thing is that Diablo 2 is NOT going to be 3d, so that is a feature unique to Darkstone. It'll be interesting to see how many features in Darkstone overlap with those in Diablo 2 as soon as that game comes out.

The answer is simple. If you loved Diablo, you'll love Darkstone. If you didn't like it, you won't like this game, either. I shudder to think of how many times I've said DIABLO in this review, so I'll add three more. Diablo, Diablo, Diablo. I hope I'm making the point clear to you here... this game plays a LOT like Diablo. ;)

I remember oh too well sitting in my room in the frat house, attempting to get my Ph.D. in Molecular Biology when Diablo hit the street. Oh well, so I didn't finish school, I got computer skillz to pay the rent. Man, did Diablo make me one antisocial, completely worthless, pale skinned, frightened by the light, burden on society. Nothing has come out yet that IMHO can compete with the pure addiction and fun that came with that title. Darkstone is attempting to dethrone what I consider the best action game in history. Does it? In some ways yes, in some ways no. Everything works right, the game has depth, it doesn't get boring, but it just doesn't have that nice addictive quality of great games. It definitely falls in my "Damn fun waste of time" category but not quite to my "Oh hell my life is shot" category.

WindowsAdrenaline Vault, The (AVault)
Darkstone is more than an addictive time drain, it is an accessible and entertaining title no action-RPG fan should pass up without considering its strengths. In essence, Delphine has recaptured the magic of an old friend and transformed it to the degree that their title stands on its own. Although not innovative in the sense that Diablo came first nor cerebral enough to attract hardcore RPG’ers, it doesn’t have to be. The improved interface alone is reason to celebrate, but the design team has also fashioned such an engaging set of quests and invested the game with so much replayability, the resemblance to Blizzard’s classic is soon forgotten. The absence of a decent challenge is going to turn some people away, but in the end, this is great fun and that’s what counts. Should Delphine improve the niggling interface and difficulty anomalies, it will have a minor classic on its hands. Nevertheless, I’ll be adventuring through these lands for months to come.

Hamburger is kind of like steak, but much easier on the pocketbook. Likewise, Darkstone is a decent, cheap way to satisfy your role-playing hunger, as long as you’re not expecting top-notch visuals or unique innovation.

So, you see the problem. I can’t say that you should rush out and buy DARKSTONE because I’m sure you’ll be hooked, but I can’t say that you shouldn’t rush out and get it, because it’s still a decent game. The game’s look and gameplay are strong, and there's a good amount of replay value. It just can’t assure you that it will capture your imagination enough. DARKSTONE is a very solid game, but is it, as the ads claim, enough to make you forget about DIABLO II? I don’t think so.

In the end, Darkstone plays well, even if it is a bit repetitive and clichéd. For ten dollars, fans of the genre can't do any better, and even weekend hack-n-slashers just might get a kick out of this game without feeling like they paid 30 bucks too much.

For 10 bucks, Darkstone isn’t a bad waste of time. Once you get past the horrible graphics and horrendous camera, you discover that cruising around killing people, collecting items, and exploring the world is more than enough to keep you playing. Sure, Darkstone may not be the best-looking lady at the prom, but I sure wouldn’t kick her out of bed for eating crackers. If you are lookin' for some halfway decent action that won’t crunch the pocketbook, Darkstone is it. Compared to many of the cheap titles that have hit the streets as of late, this is definitely one of the best. If this game was full price I would probably give it a 5, but at this price the game is more than worth it.

WindowsChrist Centered Game Reviews
This game is like Diablo in a couple ways. For starters, the game style is the same. Many consider DarkStone a rip-off from Diablo. Another thing in common is that is also has pentagrams in it. You don't see them in DarkStone until you are in the final dungeons. I found this really disappointing, the rest of the game is great. The graphics are nice. It has an easy to use interface. There are some patches available for the game. The music is good, very fitting. Game play is fun on single player and multiplayer. I used a LAN, but I hear internet play is a little slow. All in all it's a great game, I am saddened they had to ruin it by throwing those satanic symbols in.

When all is said and done Darkstone isn’t a bad game, it just isn’t a very good one. It stuck to closely to the Diablo formula, didn’t try to make any major leaps forward in game design and in the end just becomes boring to play. You can only click on so many monsters and travel through so many random dungeon levels before life gets dull, and to be honest that is what Darkstone quickly becomes: dull.

WindowsGameGenie
Darkstone is a semi-success, a game that almost clones what it is so obviously based on but fails to really improve the whole, only duplicate and mildly enhance sections. Diablo, even lacking a true 3D engine, is still graphically impressive enough for most, and since Darkstone never uses its 3D engine to change surface of the levels (adding in-level stairs, rises, pits, etc), wholly capable of displaying the exact same terrain. It's a filler game, a pause between Diablo and Diablo II for those who waited these past two years for a true sequel to arrive. It is still fun, but fun is the best Darkstone will ever achieve until Diablo II arrives to bury it in the haze of clone memory.

PlayStationGameSpot
Sadly, the ability to play as two characters at once, the distinction that set the PC game apart from Diablo, is not available in the PlayStation version, as was originally planned. The dated graphics and the lack of any kind of two-player mode also detract from the otherwise attractive package. However, with all the character options and its nearly infinite replayability, Darkstone makes an excellent case for making a modest $10 investment.

Another Diablo like game. Select two of six characters (knight, monk, thief, etc) and enter this medieval world full of enemies, deep dungeons, mystical towns and wilderness. Your quest is to find seven crystals that can defeat the evil dragon Drakk. All presented in full 3D engine where you can rotate and zoom the entire scene as you will. Characters are also 3D, but with a reduced number of polygons, so they look a bit simple. All covered with a nice fantasy music.

For those of you who loved Diablo and want more, but can't wait for Revenant (err, or Diablo II), those insidious Frenchies over at Delphine Software have got a game for you. Darkstone, a "Diablo-style action rpg," has all the elements of gameplay that made Diablo such a success, and a bunch of new niceties as well. It's entering into a dangerous realm, though, with two more similar games about to enter its market. How does Darkstone stack up to what we know about its competitors-to-be? Read on to find out. Or don't. See if I care. I don't need you guys. I can make it on my own. I'll just become . . . a caveman. Yeah! A caveman.

WindowsESC Magazine
The role-playing game, ostensibly for PC but looking more like a console title, combines absolutely gorgeous graphics with a vague plot, clumsy gameplay and incoherent manual. That’s a shame for a game that claim to be the heir to Diablo — and one which very well could have been.

WindowsGaming Age
Fighting mystical dragons and hordes of the undead seems to be quite a popular past time in the PC gaming community. With the success of Diablo and Baldur's Gate, not to mention the hype over the upcoming Diablo II, it seems to be a wise move to cash in on this fantasy role-playing craze. When a title is entered into this arena there is a good chance of it becoming too much of what previous titles have been, but GOD’s latest title, Darkstone, presents the world from a different dimension, but is this enough?

Spec-Ops, the game that started the list of $9.99 budget priced games has a new game to relate to. DarkStone said to be the "crown jewel" of the budget list of games, is exactly... the opposite. Before I get to the review, let me refresh a few mind. Spec-Ops is undoubtly one of the worst videogames ever made, its sheer level of difficulty is what makes the game as bad as it is. Aside from that, the gameplay is tediously slow and it's nearly impossible to tell from which angle you are being shot. Not to mention the atrocious graphics that were easily some of the most lacking in detail. To be quite frank, I knew that the future $9.99 budget titles won't be any better, while some of them were, they were still below average. So here I have DarkStone, Take-Two's newest entry into the budget life, said to be the "crown jewel" of the list, this game is, but it really isn't.

Although not a complete waste of time, Darkstone is an unimaginative marketing ploy to ride on the coattails of Diablo. If you don't own Diablo, buy that instead. The minor problems that I have with Darkstone are to numerous to go through, so I will just point out a few. There is no map on the main playing screen. Instead, you have to pause the game every time you need to get your bearings. When your character is not qualified to use a certain weapon, you find that specific weapon in abundance; As soon as you become qualified, you can't find a one. This game is constantly loading. When you move from the forest to the cave it's loading. When you move from forest to town it has to load. When you move from one level to the next inside a dungeon it has to load. Loading, loading, loading, loading, loading. I watched this game load more than I actually played it.

In perhaps the game's only saving grace, it costs an amazingly affordable 10 bucks. Of course, there's a good reason why they priced it so cheap. Compared to the wealth of other RPGs on the PSX market, this one can't hold a candle. If you're losing sleep at night and are in need of some real-time combat, get Vagrant Story. If it's too late and you already own this atrocity, just break it up and try to feed it to ducks or something.
