In concluding, I have to say that I am very impressed with the new Day of Defeat. I really think Valve pulled everything together quite nicely and I know that it will provide hours upon hours of entertainment for me and others.
WindowsGame Watcher (Oct 30, 2005)
The only limitations to the game so far would be the lacking in new quality maps. In time you may find that the game play becomes a little repetitive since every server you play on is playing the exact same four maps in the same rotation. Hopefully like the original, new quality maps will become available, keeping the great game going for a long time. The new graphics, fast paced game play, fun to play every class and good balancing of the weapon kits all bring Day of Defeat:Source to the front of the pack for WWII games on the market at the moment. Even though this is a retail addition to HL2, it is still a mod at heart. Hopefully this will lay a good foundation for a strong community to have another good game for a long time to come. Either way, for $20 there is a lot of fun to be had here until you drop your next chunk of change on a $50 game.

While most people put Counter-Strike at the top of the multiplayer games they associate with Half-Life, Day of Defeat isn't too far behind, especially now that it's been overhauled and updated by Valve, complete with high dynamic range lighting. Assuming your video card supports HDR, you'll get some nice (and subtle) lighting effects that both make the game look pretty and make it a little easier to see in dark areas. Day of Defeat's HDR is not nearly as pronounced as in, say, Far Cry, which is nice because that can get a little distracting in the midst of a firefight.

I've always found it hard to review a mod of some game. Especially when it is widespread and has a close community. Originated from a free modification to Half-Life in 2001, the earlier Day of Defeat has evolved into a successful World War 2 shooter

While Counter-Strike was easily the most popular mod developed out of the Half-Life engine, another mod based on World War II, Day of Defeat, also turned out to be quite a hit. Like Counter-Strike before it, the mod eventually made it onto store shelves as its own retail product. So it only makes sense that Valve would port this popular game over to its flashy new Source engine as it did with Counter-Strike. While a lack of maps cuts into the game's value somewhat, Day of Defeat: Source still offers a satisfying and exciting experience for those who just can't get enough of World War II.
MacintoshMacLife (Nov 17, 2010)
Although DOD: Source ran perfectly under Mac OS 10.6.4, it presently supports only 17 Valve-blessed maps and two game modes--and those limitations are frustrating. The game has a die-hard fan base that’s helpful and encouraging to new players, and we’re sure they’d love a little more content from Valve. We’d also like to see a team-only voice chat feature to boost the game’s cooperative element. Even with its short-comings, Day of Defeat: Source is still a great time with the Greatest Generation. Its amazing pace and action make it well worth the $9.99 price.

Ah, the ruined landscape of wartorn France. Speaking of lovely places where shootings happen, I was in Croydon on Saturday and found myself talking to a friend from one of those paper magazine things about this here review. "Ah, you just need a couple of war stories for that," he said, truthfully. But, I thought to myself, perhaps a little cynically?
WindowsGameStar (Germany) (Nov, 2006)
WindowsFiringSquad (Oct 07, 2005)
On the other hand, it’s absolutely gorgeous, with exquisite lighting and fantastic sound effects that help deliver the devilishly fast pace right to your own door. Our screenshots quite simply cannot capture the ability of the game engine to fade in and out from dark to light areas, or to contrast a bright bulb in a murky alley. Then there’s little denying that DoD: Source has dominated my leisure playtime since I got it. And, of course, $20 is cheap. Think you’ll get this much entertainment from your Care Bears season 1 DVD?
WindowsGameSpy (Oct 31, 2005)
Either viewpoint is valid, I think, and I'll leave it to you to decide which to hold. I will say, though, that at $20 a la carte or bundled for cheap with other Valve products, anyone who enjoys this kind of game should easily get his money's worth. Unlike a lot of other shooters with tacked-on multiplayer, Day of Defeat: Source seems to be capitalizing on its Half-Life pedigree, and thus has an abundance of servers -- good servers -- to play on and armies of players to play with. This makes it the kind of game that you can just start up and play for a little while at a time without having to worry about too much.

Allez-vous apprécier Day Of Defeat Source ?
WindowsGameStar (Germany) (Oct, 2005)
WindowsComputer Gaming World (CGW) (Nov 02, 2005)
Chalk it up to Valve’s ever-changing Source engine, its ballyhooed physics and new high dynamic range (HDR) lighting. The furniture In DOD’s broken houses, the potted plants on their sills, the bicycles abandoned on their stoops, and every picture hanging on every wall—all fodder for cyclones of secondary death. You won’t catch the rest until the shredding and blasting stops, but it’s there in the form of pulsating sunlight that changes to mimic your adjusting peepers. Better than restored archival footage? If only it weren’t so hellishly hard.
WindowsPC Powerplay (Nov, 2005)
September endlich die Source-Variante des beliebten Multiplayer-Mod Day of Defeat veröffentlicht.
Windows1UP (Oct 05, 2005)
Whether it was part of your Steam Half-Life 2 package or not, it's been a long wait for the arrival of the updated Day of Defeat using the Source engine. And unlike the days of the original Half-Life, it's no longer a free mod developed by the community. Following in the steps of Counter-strike before it, Day of Defeat: Source has become a full-fledged internal project at Valve. The stakes have risen significantly, but despite that, if this new version is to reprise its popularity as a Half-Life mod it will once again do so on the shoulders of its community.
