An amazing fighting game. Team Ninja has improved the fighting engine greatly from the DOA2 series. Offering 3+ new characters to play as, as well as new arenas, new battle modes, and improved graphics, DOA3 is by far one of the best fighting games of it's time.
The audio is the only portion that doesn’t match up to the production values of the other areas. Having a big name band provide some tracks is nice, but even die-hard Aerosmith fans will be hard pressed to say the three songs featured are among the better of their catalog. The rest of the background music is well done, but not quite the caliber that will prompt a petition for a domestic soundtrack release.
The bottom line is simple. If you're getting an Xbox this Holiday Season, then DOA3 should be the first game you buy. It's exclusive to Xbox for at least 3-6 months, while a PS2 version would reportedly require downgrading. Either way, you can't go wrong with a game created by Team Ninja.
With practically no loading, and nice big fighting environments overflowing with great lighting and particle effects, there is little doubt that Dead or Alive 3 is a fighting game lover’s dream come true. If you buy an Xbox, and liked fighting games at some point in your life, if even for a moment, Dead or Alive 3 is a must.
Describing how good DoA3 is, and how much better it looks than the games that have preceded it, is a difficult task indeed. What's quite easy, however, is proclaiming that Dead or Alive 3 is quite simply the best fighting game ever made - and quite possibly the single best-looking videogame of any kind, ever. If for some reason you hadn't previously made up your mind about whether or not to buy an Xbox, then relax. The decision's just been made for you.
I’m not really one for long reviews, I personally don’t like reading them or writing them, but with this game, the words just came pouring out. DOA3 is a perfect example of what can be accomplished on this fantastic new console. With graphics to die for, many gameplay enhancements, and some kickass brand new characters/backgrounds, DOA3 is a magnificent sequel that you should definitely pick up if you own an Xbox. The way I see it, if you’re not playing this game on a regular basis, you’re missing out – BIG TIME. And for those who have already picked it up – this "Next Level" of gaming is great, eh?
Playing in single-player mode, one can get rather bored after a while, despite the beautiful graphics and many different techniques. Naturally, that would be the right time to switch to some multiplayer action and show some of your friends how to do that 5-hit combo move. After all, it's playing against human opponents where DoA3 truly shines.
For the last few years, the Dead Or Alive series has been the third-stringer in the 3D fighting game world as Tekken and Virtua Fighter battled it out. Even now, there's a pretty sizeable percentage of gamers that prejudge Dead Or Alive 3 as a cheap thrill featuring big-breasted ladies as the main draw, calling it a turbo charged Virtua Fighter 2, or a less flashy Tekken 3. To those gamers, it's time to eat those words and welcome, not only a competitor that looks to be the best 3D fighting game, but also the new standard of video gaming. It's time to realize that Dead Or Alive 3 is nothing like Virtua Fighter or Tekken but a unique 3D fighting game that will definitely change both the way we see the next generation of 3D fighting games, but sets the standard for quality on the Xbox. Welcome to the next level.
With all the graphical and gameplay musculature, there are a few aspects of DOA 3 that are a little thin. As is tradition with the series, there isn't much in the way of storylines for the characters. End movies, while entertaining, do little to build a character's personality. Also lacking is any type of world mode or missions. These are what gave Soul Caliber and Street Fighter Alpha 3 so much replay value. I'm not going to complain much, though, because Dead or Alive 3 is a masterpiece in both form and function.
Overall DOA3 is an excellent fighting game. The character physics are spot on with the female characters breast bobble looking scarily realistic, I wonder how they motion captured that? In the story mode all the conversation is subtitled which is excellent. Most importantly of all though is that it has a damn good fight model that will make sure the only thing that will make you want to stop playing is your aching wrists.
Interactive environments allow you to pin your opponent against a wall or tree, or toss them through walls and windows. When a fighter is thrown off an elevated platform, the other character leaps down to rejoin the battle, and it's as exhilarating as it is ridiculous. The slick user interface offers options galore, including story, tag-team, and practice modes. Dead or Alive 3 has long been the premier fighter for the Xbox console, and I don't see that changing anytime soon.
Of all game types, Fighting games still rule the console industry, I can't imagine someone not having played Tekken, not having played Street Fighter, not having played Virtua Fighter nor even Soul Calibur. In the line of the Original DOA titles, Tecmo and Microsoft have released DOA3 for the Xbox.
Being the first fighting game for the Xbox and possibly the greatest fighting game of all time, I’d say this little gem deserves all the hype it can get. Never before has a fighting game broken such boundries as these and actually made the player use skill and tactics to destroy another. Never before have graphics of this calibur been seen in a game such as this. And never before has a fighting game been this much fun. Not perfection, but a damn good start to a genre that will be revived to something more epic, challenging, and more than just your average "beat em up".
This game is easily one of the best looking
games available for the Xbox today. Everything is just exploding at you from your
TV screen! And the digital “bouncy” factor in the game is a treat for
any red blooded American man’s eyes!
Dead or Alive 3 rides a fine line between being a game that's very accessible to casual gamers, while still having enough gameplay to satisfy more serious players. Unfortunately a couple of gameplay problems get in the way of Dead or Alive 3 being a title with lasting longevity, but that shouldn't stop anyone from at least renting the game. Although it's not on par with a Virtua Fighter title, Dead or Alive 3 has a distinct appeal which qualifies it as a perfect compliment to your Xbox collection.
Dead or Alive 3 is a solid, solid game. I wish its storylines were more compelling, but since it has beautiful graphics, easy controls and decent sound, I guess three out of four isn’t bad. An excellent Christmas present for the Xbox owner on your list and a quality multiplayer game, as that is the anchor as far as replayability goes. Lastly, the game does have a certain sexual theme to it, with the more than generous depiction of the female form. I can honestly say that gamers who are mature enough to deal with it appropriately should play this game.
Every great video game console launches with a great fighting game. Saturn, PlayStation, Dreamcast, PlayStation 2 and now the Xbox. Dead or Alive 3 isn't as innovative as Tekken or Mortal Kombat 3 was six years ago, but it is almost as much fun. I wouldn't go out and buy an Xbox just for Dead or Alive 3, but come 'on, it's not like there aren't plenty of other reasons. DoA3 isn't exactly icing on this delicious Xbox cake -- it's more like a piece of apple pie. The cake is good enough to eat on its own, but why have only one dessert when you could have two?
To conclude then the graphics are ace, the sound is good, the controls are well-designed, as are the characters and scenery. So what’s the problem? Well, it’s just not very different from any other fighter out there, is it, and what’s more aggravating still are it’s similarities with the last game in the series! It’s rather short-lived, too. All in all though, a well-made, and good introduction to the genre for Xbox gamers.
In the end, Dead or Alive 3 has one major failing -- its gameplay lacks the depth and innovation it needs to differentiate itself from its famous predecessor. Don't get me wrong, it's not that it's a poor game -- on the contrary, it's very fun while you try out all the characters and absorb all the pretty visuals. The problem is that at its heart, DoA3 is more or less the same game as DoA2. Outside of two characters, new moves, the graphics and some control changes, very little is truly new in DoA3. If you were decent at DoA2 you'll get the hang of this game in three seconds. Newbies needn't feel left out, either, as it's very, very masher-friendly. A newbie who has an idea of how to counter can be quite annoying, and that just shouldn't be happening in a supposedly deep, complex fighting game. It remains to be seen how far high-level players will take this game, but in this regard I have the feeling that Virtua Fighter 4 has little to worry about from Dead or Alive 3.
Fans of the first 2 games will have little to complain about, but only because nothing has changed. Gamers new to the series will find a somewhat deep and engrossing fighter. Also, those looking for something to show off their new $300 box will not be dissapointed. The only group of people who will be unsatisfied are those looking for an entirely new DOA experience. The new characters and stages aren't enough to change the game drastically, but there is still a great game underneath all of the gloss.
What can I say? I love fighting games, I love good graphics, and I love women! This is an all inclusive package. The levels are big, bold and beautiful. You jaw just drops when you see this game for the first time. You can see that this game is influenced by real kung-fu movies like "Drunken Master", "Crouching Tiger", to name a few. This game definately captures the martial arts vibe in a HUGE way!
If you want to show off the power of the Xbox, then Dead or Alive 3 is your ticket. Screenshots don't do the game justice. Its subtle details are the most impressive: the texture of leather clothes is easily distinguished from denim or silk, and the characters' hair flows smoothly and realistically. Clearly, tremendous effort went into the game's 3D engine and into the character endings. Beyond all that, Dead or Alive 3 is basically very similar to its predecessor. So if you've already mastered previous Dead or Alive games, let alone other 3D fighting games, then you may find that there's very little new for you here. On the other hand, if you've never played a Dead or Alive game before, then this is great place to start--all the characters have plenty of moves for you to learn, and they're all basically fun to play.
Despite its inherent flaws, Dead or Alive 3 is still a blast to play, there's no arguing that. There's something about smacking someone out of a tower and watch them plummet 20 storeys to the cement jungle below, and there's no other game that gives me a feeling of satisfaction when I shove someone's head into an ice pillar and watch the ice crumble into a million pieces.
DOA 3 is a prime example of graphics taking center stage over gameplay. The hype machine has been working overtime on this one, and though it's very far from a bad game, it's not particularly close to an amazing one, either.
Honestly though, while I can spew technical and strategic merits for an hour, at the end of the day, DoA's game play is damned fun. It won't win any medals for a perfectly balanced cast or an innovative control scheme, and it certainly won't be a tourney fighter, but it's still one of those games that you and your friends can play for hours. The bottom line -DoA won't have your Virtua Fighter-toting friends getting jealous, but they and you will have a good time with this game. With a fair amount of play modes and ways to fight and it's fast and action packed game play, this game is definitely worth a look if you want a fun fighting game for your Box.
Dead or Alive 3 stands out as a beat 'em up for people who haven't played the others. It's an also-ran by design, knocked together in a short space of time using assets employed throughout its predecessor. It invites criticism from start to stop, but it definitely has more than its fair share of bouncy breasted heroines and the finest visuals of any game on the format to date. Coupled with the average fighting mechanics, for some that will be enough.
In general Dead or Alive 3 does little to counter the dominance of the Tekken, Virtua Fighter and Soul Calibur's in the 3D fighter market. Whilst it is both glitzy and sparkling at first glance, upon closer inspection it's apparent that the series has progressed very little with this instalment. Its looks will win it fans without question, but those wanting a little more for their money may be somewhat disappointed, with little incentive for progressive play one player, Dead or Alive 3 strengths lie in its ability to impress visually, and of course, the two player mode. As a demonstration of what the Xbox is capable of, and remember this is still only the first generation, you need look little further than Dead or Alive 3, if you are after a more technical fighting game then theres little to draw in the Tekken/Virtua Fighter devotees.
