The basic gameplay is present in spades....and drills and kerosene tanks and boxes of nails and saw blades. Altogether, you get a generous sampling of the outrageous new combo weapons. You also get a great sense for how the new developer, Blue Castle, appreciates the hallmarks of Dead Rising. From mixing power shakes, toting magazines, and donning unlikely clothes to the boss fights against human opponents and the challenging save game system, you'll see that Dead Rising 2 isn't afraid of the things that made the first Dead Rising unique (and sometimes frustrating). This is a wonderful way for Capcom to build to the release of the full game.

Is it a demo? Is a sequel? Is it a prequel? Actually, it's all of the above and so much more.

Overall, the game is a solid taste of things to come and if the final game sticks the landing, then we’re all in for a good zombie-killing time. There are plenty of quirks, but the game manages to work past them. I didn’t care much for the first game, but now I’m anxious to play the sequel. *Relatable as in a father’s need to protect his child, not as in OMGWTFBBQ ZOMBIES!!!

Case Zero doesn’t add much to the Dead Rising 2 experience, but it’s cheap and offers lots of fun and replayability. Be warned that there’s a strict time-limit and if rushed through, Case Zero can feel a tad short. It’s more than a demo and it’s a great way to get a taste of what awaits in Dead Rising 2 without investing in the full version.

An odd proposition. It straddles the line between being a standalone experience and a demo of its big brother, Dead Rising 2. The fact that it does both things so effectively is one of the bigger surprises of the year.

For $5, it’s well worth a peek into the world of Dead Rising. This is downloadable content done right. More please.

Little has changed in the four years since Dead Rising came out, but that doesn't hamper this downloadable content too much. The unique, ticking-clock structure is different from that in any other open-world game, so anyone who enjoyed the original will have plenty to like in this miniature package. It does take only a couple of hours to reach the credits, but to see every ending and compete every objective, you'll need to come back a few more times. Plus, you carry over your rank into Dead Rising 2. The level cap of five can be reached in a couple of play-throughs, but it does give you a lasting benefit for your hard work. Case Zero is a great piece of downloadable content, giving you a peek behind the curtain before the full product is released in September.

It’s not long, it’s not groundbreaking and it’s not an essential purchase. It is however, great fun and easily, EASILY worth the price point of 400 Microsoft points, especially if you liked the original. As a bonus, leveling your charcater will even carry forward into the main game when its released. What are you waiting for? The zombies aren’t going to rake themselves.
