Deep Fighter

While Deep Fighter is not for everyone, it is the best undersea action-adventure title released to date. Although basically the same as the Dreamcast release -- except for the controls and the multiplayer options -- the developers at Criterion Studios have really found an effective way to take advantage of computer advances and player feedback in the three years since Sub Culture to produce a more coherent and enjoyable product. Weak in the combat and weaponry areas, this is not a must-have for first-person shooter fans who just want a blastfest under the sea. But with truly outstanding graphics, music and artificial intelligence, and with a real sense of exploration and discovery, this is the perfect game for those with a little more patience and a little less itchy trigger finger.

I couldn't get away with it though because, not only is Deep Fighter not crap, it happens to be one of the best games I've personally reviewed for Game Over Online. Does it deserve a Gamer's Choice Award? I've been giving that some thought and came to the conclusion that the answer is probably not because its appeal is limited to a certain segment of gamers. If you have been looking for a combat flight sim with a twist, though, Deep Fighter is just the thing. Great graphics, sound, physics, some plot - it's got it all.

On the whole though, I sincerely enjoyed my experiences with Deep Fighter. Simple and complex at the same time, the relaxing atmosphere and intelligent mission structure had me yearning for retries at failed scenarios hours after bed time. An enjoyable little diversion from the bigger named titles of the world, Deep Fighter doesn't sink at all.

So, while Deep Fighter isn't destined for any awards, the game's intriguing storyline, solid gameplay, and sharp graphics are certainly a winning combination that definitely makes playing it a pleasurable experience. If you're looking for a unique Dreamcast game, Deep Fighter is certainly one of the best offbeat Dreamcast games out there.

Alles in allem kann Deep Fighter leider nicht wirklich überzeugen. Dazu gibt es zu viele Kritikpunkte und Ärgernisse, über die man leider nicht hinwegschauen kann. Die Grafik mag ja noch sehr schön sein, und die Unterwasserwelt gigantisch. Auch der Sound kann überzeugen, und die Steuerung mit dem Gamepad ebenfalls. Aber trotzdem hat Deep Fighter sein Ziel als U-Boot-Referenz verfehlt. Ich kann Deep Fighter letztlich den Spielern empfehlen, die ein Game für zwischendurch suchen und einfach nur ihren Spaß haben wollen. Der Rest sollte lieber auf Aquanox warten.

Deep Fighter is een knap en sfeervol product dat jammer genoeg niet de gameplay brengt die we hadden gehoopt.

Schade, Das Handels- und Söldner-Element aus Sub Culture fällt hier völlig weg. Dafür kann man Designern nicht vorwerfen, dass das Spiel immer gleich ablaufen würde. Im vermeintlichen Abwechslungsreichtum sehe ich aber ein Problem: Während viele Einsätze nach dem Wing-Commander-Schema ablaufen (zerstöre dieses Schiff und jenen Bösewicht), wechseln andere ins Action-Adventure-Genre, da Sie Schalter umlegen und kleine Rätsel lösen. Die Endgegner der einzelnen Akte wiederum erinnern an die aus Konsolen-Ballerspielen. Mag Sub Culture vor knapp drei Jahren auch noch gut ausgesehen haben, ist doch mittlerweile der Grafik-Standard stark gestiegen. Deep Fighter sieht jedoch noch fast genauso aus wie sein Vorgänger. Fazit: Verschenktes Potential, aber immer noch nett.

Doordat er maar weinig onderwater-shooters zijn, grijpt Deep Fighter meteen naar de toppositie in dit genre. Als je de game echter met Wing Commander vergelijkt, dan zakt het spel voor het examen. Flauwe humor, ietwat slome aktie en weinig afwisseling in de omgeving.

Die ersten Einsätze von Deep Fighter haben mir trotz der mittelprächtigen Grafik einigen Spaß gemacht. Doch gerade als ich mich so schön eingewöhnt hatte und der kniffligen Gegner endlich Herr wurde, wechselte unversehens das Spielprinzip. Von da an leidet die Spielqualität ganz erheblich. Die Fadenkreuz-Ballereien sind öde, die Action-Adventure-Einlagen nicht sonderlich fordernd. Dazwischen gibt’s immer wieder mal versöhnlich stimmende, reine U-Bootmissionen. Wenn Sie sich die Mühe machen und die (oft elend langen) Erkundungspassagen erdulden, werden Sie mit spannenden Unterwasseraufträgen belohnt. Weniger geduldige Geister warten lieber auf das vielversprechende Aqua.

Après une version PC qui s'était avérée un peu décevante, on pouvait craindre que la version Dreamcast soit elle aussi un peu creuse. Le genre assez superficiel de Deep Fighter se prête en tout cas très bien à la console de Sega qui montre ici son potentiel offensif en matière de 3D et d'effets avec quelques réticences tout de même...

Un jeu plutôt inégal mais qui garde tout de même assez de qualités pour intéresser le joueur attiré par la nouveauté. Dommage que de trop nombreux petits détails viennent gâcher un si bel essai.

Ich weiß, ich weiß - unter der Meeresoberfläche läuft eben auch in der Realität alles etwas langsamer ab. Trotzdem trudelt mir mein gelbes Unterseeboot vor allem in der Anfangsphase viel zu gemächlich von Einsatzort zu Einsatzort. Wer sich auf das Actionspiel in Zeitlupe erst einmal einlässt, den erwarten jedoch neben einigen wirklich hübschen Grafikeffekten abwechslungsreiche Aufträge und ein originelles Ambiente. Deutlichen Punkteabzug gibt es dagegen für die grausigen Zwischensequenzen, die den Charme eines Trash-Films der frühen 80er-Jahre versprühen, und die Tatsache, dass es innerhalb der teilweise riesigen Missionen keinerlei Speichermöglichkeit gibt.

Сказать, что очередная, не поднимается рука, — мало их, болезных. А вот слова «достаточно простенькая аркада» готов произнести несколько раз и даже под присягой. Предназначается для лиц младшего и среднего школьного возраста. Все просто, все доступно, даже английский не обязателен. Более серьезной аудитории советую ждать выхода Aqua, сиквела Archimedean Dynasty. Либо поставить на первую часть 3dfx-патч и играть в свое удовольствие.

Deep Fighter is one of those games that has already been done, and done better. At its heart, it's simply a space combat title that sunk into the ocean. The overall design of the game is bland with only the occasional bits of FMV to really spice it up. If you love space combat, you might consider renting this one, otherwise I'd stay out of the water.

Face à un public plutôt méfiant vis à vis des mondes sous-marins, Deep Fighter aura fort à faire. Certes, Criterion n'a pas fait les choses à moitié pour sa "simulation" de sous-marin : action nettement accrue, missions variées, réalisation très honnête et ergonomie impeccable sont autant d'arguments pour une plongée méritant le détour. Seulement voilà, le pilotage de véhicule amphibie dans le monde du silence avec les poissons multicolores aussi 3D soient-ils n'arrive pas à distraire suffisamment longtemps pour parcourir les 5 régions du jeu. La progression s'avère trop tranquille. Attachant ou attendrissant, Deep Fighter souffre d'un manque d'intensité évident, ce qui, dès lors, séduira seulement le fan de Cousteau.

Deep Fighter is one of those games that needs a sequel. With a few refinements in the gameplay and an upgrade in the graphics department, this game stands a chance. As for now, this is one to pass on unless you're a fan of guppies that can destroy a metal submarine by ramming it repeatedly.
